Johnny Unusual Ate This - A near-weekly series of terrible mistakes

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
I'd only say there's one particularly interesting one this week, but still.

5PbZeMI.jpg

Schneider's Hot Rod
T2rkHbD.jpg

Are Hot Rods Canadian? I feel like they are. Basically, they are Slim Jims, which I think we also get.

Kitkat Gooey Double Chocolate

LJEZC3Q.jpg

I do love KitKats and this seems like entirely the kind I like.

Happy Easter Chocolate Lentils
jQzmlw2.jpg

OK, this might need context for some American readers and even some Canadian ones... if just the use of the term "lentils" for this candy. Lentil doesn't refer to ingredient but in shape and these are basically non-brand versions of the Canadian snack "Smarties". Unlike American Smarties (which we have at Halloween as "Rockets"), these are more like slim M&Ms with a slightly harder milk chocolate and a thicker candy shell. I feel like there's a debate if M&Ms or Smarties are better but they are both great and both different yet similar. I used to remember that "lentil" was used to describe the shape but forgot until today.

Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape
7y75tbi.jpg

Is this the original bubble tape or simply the most popular. Curious to see how it compares to the rather flawed different brand bubble tape I had a month or two back.

Margaritaville Margarita Drink Mix
rY9ngMO.jpg

It's weird to make Margaritaville your brand. Isn't that song about alcoholism or something? Anyway, I don't know if I've ever had a real margarita but I've had similar drinks. I actually don't drink alcohol very often at all but a light citrus-y drink is up my alley.

Strawberry Fanta
cGxuZ57.jpg

One of the more boring Fantas.

Pringles Cheddar Cheese
ykQP5eV.jpg

One of the more boring Pringles. But I'm sure I'll like it. That said, does anyone know what, if anything, a kite has to do with Cheddar. Is this a non-sequitur or a clever allusion?

Astronaut Apple Cinnamon Wedges
l8U9uLP.jpg

I vaguely remember having astronaut ice cream. Anyway, I mostly bought this because it was 40% off and I certainly didn't want to buy this at a full price of $8.50.

I think the “kite” is made of a wedge of cheddar. So, visual pun I guess?

also cinnamon apple seems like something that could actually work well freeze dried beyond just being a space novelty.

My mom knew it was my cheat day in a few days and being stuck inside with covid threw these into my car package

Kitkat Caramel Crisp

Eastcoast Lifestyle Backyard BBQ
BBQchips_700x.jpg

I love the East Coast, I love BBQ, but I'm not sure what makes an Eastcoast BBQ. Montreal spice, maybe? I do see horseradish spice on the back. Maybe that?

Um, yeah, it's fine.

Kitkat Gooey Double Chocolate

LJEZC3Q.jpg

I do love KitKats and this seems like entirely the kind I like.
It's a good extra-chocolate KitKat but it really isn't "gooey". So if that's what you are looking for, sorry.

Happy Easter Chocolate Lentils
jQzmlw2.jpg

Terrible. It wasn't until I ate a few I realized "artificially flavoured" meant "this is not chocolate".

Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape
7y75tbi.jpg

Is this the original bubble tape or simply the most popular. Curious to see how it compares to the rather flawed different brand bubble tape I had a month or two back.
I had a different brand of bubble tape a while back and didn't care for the stiffness. This is much better, very soft and pliable and rolls/unrolls easily.

Eh, I guess I don't care for Margaritas that much.

Strawberry Fanta
cGxuZ57.jpg

One of the more boring Fantas.
Not BAD but I wasn't wrong.

Pringles Cheddar Cheese
ykQP5eV.jpg

One of the more boring Pringles. But I'm sure I'll like it. That said, does anyone know what, if anything, a kite has to do with Cheddar. Is this a non-sequitur or a clever allusion?
I actually didn't. I found it had a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Astronaut Apple Cinnamon Wedges
l8U9uLP.jpg

I vaguely remember having astronaut ice cream. Anyway, I mostly bought this because it was 40% off and I certainly didn't want to buy this at a full price of $8.50.
Yummy but, like $1 yummy, not $8.50 yummy. Accept it as a gift but don't buy it s such.

Kitkat Caramel Crisp

6000200948477.jpg

Eastcoast Lifestyle Backyard BBQ
BBQchips_700x.jpg
The KitKat was a pretty simple KitKat with caramel but that's still great. Backyard BBQ is good and I can tell it does have a different taste than usual BBQ but I can't say how..

If east coast Canada bbq has any relation to southeast US bbq it would have more vinegar, but I have no idea if that’s the case.

Fanta Berry

RF0Y8es.jpg

Not any specific berry. Just... berry.

Cheetos Pelatazos Futebolas
e1M2Tt4.jpg

Finally, Cheetos you can kick.

Margaritaville Pina Colada Drink Mix

rCdkHjD.jpg

Getting caught in the rain sold seperately.

Super Soda

CDQwQun.jpg

I've had the original flavour, Super Lemon, as a child and the packaging, though adjusting for the new flavour, looks nearly identity to my late 80s/early 90s memories of my dad bringing these back from Japan.

Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape Sour Blue Raspberry

1SurCO8.jpg

Original flavour bubble tape is good so I imagine I will similarly enjoy this.

Candy Buttons Spring - Blue Raspberry, Grape and Watermelon

UCcPCgK.jpg

Yet another holdover from Easter.

Kitkat Gooey Salted Caramel

OXSECTF.jpg

The last one was good but not actually gooey. I suspect this will have a similar vibe.

I did taste like berries but not exciting.
Cheetos Pelatazos Futebolas
e1M2Tt4.jpg

Finally, Cheetos you can kick.
Not bad but less good than cheese puffs. Not a bad texture, I suppose, but not memorable and less cheesy than most Cheetos.

Margaritaville Pina Colada Drink Mix

rCdkHjD.jpg

Getting caught in the rain sold seperately.
I think this is technically good but there's something about this kind of sweetness that I'm not in the mood for it while I'm still recovering from my illness.
Super Soda

CDQwQun.jpg

I've had the original flavour, Super Lemon, as a child and the packaging, though adjusting for the new flavour, looks nearly identity to my late 80s/early 90s memories of my dad bringing these back from Japan.
Very sour for the first 15 seconds, then a decent candy with fizzy stuff in it.

Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape Sour Blue Raspberry

1SurCO8.jpg

Original flavour bubble tape is good so I imagine I will similarly enjoy this.
Decent enough and again, good texture.

Candy Buttons Spring - Blue Raspberry, Grape and Watermelon

UCcPCgK.jpg

Yet another holdover from Easter.
Technically tasted like the stated flavours but first and foremost taste like a hard sugar candy.
Kitkat Gooey Salted Caramel

Not as gooey as I hoped, but still good

Another week...

Kit Kat Chunky
dgT7vN8.jpg

This is old hat for me but... it is a good bar.

Dino Skinz Smarties
jpxLSW1.jpg

This is going to be interesting to me. In Canada, Smarties are a kind of svelte-er M&Ms, as discussed with those Smartie rip off candies. But we have an equivalent to American Smarties called Rockets. I've only seen them on Halloween but I'm interested to see if they taste nearly identical like I assume.

Plus free dinosaur skin toy. Easter treats are weird.

Big League Chew Cottontail Cotton Candy
4Hbaqy2.jpg

Yep, that classic Easter flavour cotton candy.

Peeps Marshmallow Flavoured Candy

7Chunfo.jpg

I love marshmallow but have lately found marshmallow flavoured things not that good and I expect this cheapo Easter candy won't do much better.

Margaritaville Strawberry Daquiri Drink Mix
5t5L2tM.jpg

Honestly, I haven't been enjoying these Margaritaville Drink Mixes but I don't know if it is the quality of the drink mix or simply that I don't drink alcoholic drinks to enjoy the non-alcoholic versions.

Pringles Cheddar and Sour Cream
6XU6Qfx.jpg

For a limited time only; the most basic-ass flavour. Seriously, I will probably like it, simply because I do like sour cream flavours.

Yoohoo

oR4ptwI.jpg

Before I had it in a drink box. Will it taste better from a glass bottle? Will I still be pretty disappointed?

A completely competent KitKat bar. Therefore yummy.

I like this more than the other Margaritavilles but still not over the moon for it.

If there's a difference between American Smarties and Rockets, I can't tell.

Big League Chew Cottontail Cotton Candy
4Hbaqy2.jpg

Yep, that classic Easter flavour cotton candy.
I'm not big on the cotton candy flavour but it is good and it's the kind of texture where I don't mind chewing it even after the flavour is gone.
Peeps Marshmallow Flavoured Candy

7Chunfo.jpg

I love marshmallow but have lately found marshmallow flavoured things not that good and I expect this cheapo Easter candy won't do much better.
Not awful but it's that generic powder-y stuff condenced into little pills. I can like that but I don't think a general marshmallow flavour befits it.

Pringles Cheddar and Sour Cream
6XU6Qfx.jpg

For a limited time only; the most basic-ass flavour. Seriously, I will probably like it, simply because I do like sour cream flavours.
Yep, I liked it but I tasted far more sour cream than cheddar. But considering I didn't care for the cheddar one from last week, maybe it's for the best.

Yoohoo

oR4ptwI.jpg

Before I had it in a drink box. Will it taste better from a glass bottle? Will I still be pretty disappointed?
Yeah, I still find this starts not bad then tastes more watery as you go on.

Snacks for Monday!

Star Brites Peppermint Candy
nMILbR4.jpg

Peppermints that make me feel like I've just finished a meal at an 80s steak house... but with half the calories!

Galaxy Gum Tape Blue Raspberry

V42OVLe.jpg

I had the bubble gum flavoured bubble gum but this time it's BLUE!

KitKat White
WEfYo1x.jpg

Not a big white chocolate person, particularly when it is on a candy bar. Still, Kit Kat is usually good.

Yoohoo
owhvkQ0.jpg

This is the last form of Yoohoo in the store. Will I like it more in can form? It is possible, a proper drinking vessel DOES have an effect on the experience.

Happy Easter Bobbin Bunnies with Candy

qNoRM2b.jpg

Almost tried all the generic-ass Easter candy but there's still some left. I'm low key hopeful on this one. It can't be worse than the chocolate lentils.

Island Punch Green Tropical Dream

p7DHL1V.jpg

Needed to double check to make sure I didn't get this one yet. I didn't. It was lime or something.

Doritos Flamin' Hot Limon

RSVdC8Q.jpg

I don't care much for "Flamin' Hot" stuff but I love when lime is in a spicy chip! Hopeful for this one.

Basically tastes exactly what they look like, to me.

Galaxy Gum Tape Blue Raspberry

V42OVLe.jpg

This is actually quite good. I don't know if the regular flavour was just old or packed poorly but the material is softer. Not as good as the original bubble tape but this is good.

KitKat White
WEfYo1x.jpg

This is low on my Kit Kat flavour list BUT it's still really good.

I shook it so much it burst out like it was carbonated and downed it before it had a chance to settle. OK-ish choco flavour with watery aftertaste. At least I don't need to cleanse my palette.

Eeee, it was about as bad as the chocolate lentils. *thumbs down fart noise*

I quite liked this one. I don't quite need to put an asterisk but it's good.

Looks fancy!

Lik-M-Aid Fun Dip

EHSJDHS.jpg

A classic from my childhood. No special flavours or anything.

Cocoa Pebbles Bar

fVzBByY.jpg

I swear I had Pebbles as a kid but I only remember them as being round and every source tells me I'm wrong and they are flakey.

Fanta Peach

8RYxpd3.jpg

Ooo, peach.

Jolly Rancher Cherry Drink Mix
Ihd39lI.jpg

I love Jolly Ranchers but I'm not looking forward to this.

Bunny Bubble Gum
nsvuJOY.jpg

Most of the Easter stuff was crap so this will probably also be that.

Combos Pepperoni Pizza
TRqnIgA.jpg

I don't HATE Combos but I'm not super into them either. And there's a lot of flavours to try. Let's start with pizza.

jpfriction

(He, Him)
Nacho cheese pretzel combos (or whatever the blue bag ones are called) and a mountain dew got me through many a road trip in high school. Also got me diarrhea.

Can never find that flavor anymore, I think it was discontinued. Probably for the best.

Lik-M-Aid Fun Dip

EHSJDHS.jpg

Loved these so much.

Isn't that a classic from everyone's childhood?
Not mine, as much as I wanted them to be. They were my favorite candy growing up, but I 1) wasn't allowed a lot of candy as a kid to begin with, and 2) was especially not allowed what was essentially a bag of pure, granulated sugar. I maybe got one of these once a year tops. Maybe 2 or 3 if I was really lucky that year and could trick a schoolmate into trading theirs for something inferior that I had to bargain with.

This really interests me.

And you're right on both counts!

In the States, they're these flakes. When I moved to Canada, I was shocked (and appalled) to find out they were not only very round, but also lived up to their name -- they were hard as a rock.

Then they disappeared, and I saw American Pebbles show up as import at the kosher supermarkets, and eventually, the real deal arrived here.

Looking into it, though, I think they were originally flakes here, were changed to literal pebbles, then now we have flakes again.

This. Was. Garbo. It's that cloyingly sweet fake chocolate and maybe there is real chocolate in it but whatever they did for the taste, the mouthfeel (it's firm but not in a pleasant way. It doesn't melt comfortably in the mouth). I might use it to add sweetness to morning oats or something but as is, I did not like them.

Lik-M-Aid Fun Dip

EHSJDHS.jpg

A classic from my childhood. No special flavours or anything.
I'm reminded that while the dust has good flavour, there is no good way to eat this. Sucking the bar and dipping it in works till it doesn't, either you run out of dust or stick and the stick has a hard time digging out dust from the bottom. I kind of don't like the taste of the sticks. I like the idea in principle; the sugar has a sharper, tangier taste while the stick is very mild. I think it's a neat snack and yummy but with a lot of flaws, at least for me. Maybe other folks have better systems for eatin' em.

YABBA DABBA DOO! THIS IS pretty ok

Thank you for restoring my sanity. I was worried it might be fakey chocolate despite the promise of milk chocolate but no, it's yummy milk chocolate. But it's only slightly different than a Crunch bar and I found there was only enough of the flakes to add some texture. Good, but not memorable. Will be a little more interested if there's a Fruity Pebble bar

Fanta Peach

8RYxpd3.jpg

Ooo, peach.
It's peach. It's fine.

Jolly Rancher Cherry Drink Mix
Ihd39lI.jpg

I love Jolly Ranchers but I'm not looking forward to this.
OK, so I didn't like the Starburst drink mixes much. I love Starburst but the waxy element doesn't work as much in drink form. Not bad but there are better options. I thought this would be the same. NOPE! I LOVE IT. This might be my favourite of the drink mixes and I get to go through lots of other flavours! Hoorah! Asterisk for this one, don't sleep on it if you like Jolly Ranchers because it works surprisingly well in drink form.
Bunny Bubble Gum
nsvuJOY.jpg

Most of the Easter stuff was crap so this will probably also be that.
I wasn't excited but this isn't bad and slightly interesting. It's a gum that has the sugary taste of old-fashioned jelly beans. Lots of better gum but still, I like it.

Combos Pepperoni Pizza
TRqnIgA.jpg

I don't HATE Combos but I'm not super into them either. And there's a lot of flavours to try. Let's start with pizza.
I like Combos more than I remember and liked these. BUT. The saltiness gets tiring after a while. I don't mind it at first but it just wears me down. This is actually one of the few where the serving sizes COULD match what I want. Except I'm a pretty compulsive snacker so probably not.

Gumball Machine Toy Bank
PGiU0wm.jpg

Bought a cheap toy with some candy attached.

Pocky Tasty
OQ4bLrA.jpg

I don't know if this is just regular Pocky in some special packaging or not. It looks like it's some milk and honey flavour based on the packaging.

Kool-Aid Popping Candy
WEcveNZ.jpg

I did the Christmas version of this but I think this is a different flavour.

Combos Pizzeria
9P6Wys8.jpg

It's weird the flavour is a location. It looks like it is more cheese focused but also apparently the other one has a cracker shell (my mistake) and this is pretzel.

Lime Crush
Tww43PO.jpg

I love orange Crush but let's see what lime can do. Something, probably.

Hershey's Cookies and Cream with Graham Crackers
OblG2Hm.jpg

Yum! Looking forward to it.

Jolly Rancher Green Apple Drink Mix
e1ORako.jpg

I love green apple flavours.

I don't think I ever met another person who actually liked the taste of a fun dip stick, but it was my favorite part. I would usually eat one separate and use my finger in lieu. The mild flavor is exactly why it was a personal fave. It definitely spoke to my Japanese side lol.

I don't know if this is just regular Pocky in some special packaging or not. It looks like it's some milk and honey flavour based on the packaging.
It's 'fermented butter', not honey. What that means, I'm not sure, but it'll probably just taste like a very rich, buttery chocolate. Also the pretzel-sticks underneath the chocolate are advertised as using whole grain flower so those'll probably taste different too.
