It's just you - Talking about Deltarune

So this news dropped not too long ago:

Deltarune Chapter 2 is dropping on PC + Mac on Friday. I'm holding out for the Switch port, but I was honestly expecting to have to wait longer.

Wait, what? I didn't expect there to be more, after what Toby Fox wrote, about not knowing himself. Great!

I think he later said he would need to work with collaborators or hire people and was really scared of that. Maybe it worked out well? I haven't seen any news about this in so long that's just a vague memory.

I didn't expect anything more of this for another year, yowza. Excited!

So it's out now on Steam (For free! Still!), I'ma try to avoid major spoilers myself until it hits Switch.

Meanwhile, here's the OST on bandcamp, and it looks like Lena Raine helped out! Neato!

So, help me out here, as someone who is very solidly outside the fandom and just wants to play the sequel to Undertale when it's done: is this a finished product? Or just an incremental update?

Yeah, the Steam page says the following:

Try Chapter 1 and 2 for free now!
Chapters 3-5 are now in development and will someday be available as a paid release.

Also, glad to see that even though I had Ch1 as the non-Steam "survey program" app, it still recognized I beat it when I loaded the Steam game. I didn't go past the title screen as my spouse and I plan to play together when he's back from his trip on Tuesday, but excited to know that works.

Similar question to JBear's: I played Undertale once, how much of a refresher on story things would I need before playing Deltarune?

Not really any. Deltarune is a new story, as far as we're aware. Some Undertale characters appear in it, but they don't seem to be the same versions as the ones from that game (Undyne has no eyepatch and has no idea who Alphys is, for instance, though I wouldn't be surprised if sans is the same). Whether or not they're being used to set up a twist that actually links them is debatable, but with three chapters left it's likely not going to matter just yet.

Started from the very beginning, because I actually never made it far in Deltarune, back when chapter 1 came out. Was it different? I vaguely remember it being a bit more complicated than it is now, but maybe I was just confused by the way ACTing works here.

Anyway, played for a bit, up to the point where Susie actually seems to join. And I guess I defeated my first enemy, because she just destroyed it? It's really fun, and you can already tell that the artstyle alone has evolved since the first Undertale. Really enjoying what I played so far, including the more complex ways of dealing with enemies non-violently. But I'm already looking forward to bosses, who will demand more complex dodging maneuvers for their attacks.

Just finished chapter 2.

The highlight was trying to explain to Noelle what we were doing in the supply closet. That scene gave me the biggest laugh I've had in a while. Otherwise, it's more of the same writing style and gameplay as Undertale and the previous chapter, which is a fine thing. I did run into a few bugs that made me close and restart the program (music didn't stop when it should have at a couple of points, and would overlap with the next track that was supposed to play, and the game froze the first time I solved the puzzle in one of the annoying mouse rooms), so I hope those get fixed. Otherwise, had a great time, can't wait for more, but also expecting to wait several years for more.

Wrapped up my first playthrough. The battle mechanics are a lot more polished, and shortly after your team gets together, don't forget that you can issue Act-like commands to your teammates through their Magic menu. There's a lot of consideration to action economy in this system, and I really jive with it. And once you've gotten to the natural endpoint of the Dark World...

You can turn around and go back into the Dark World via the supply closet in the school. There's a lot more to check out in there.

I replayed Chapter 1 last night because I had forgotten almost every detail about what happens in it. In so doing, I think I managed to overcome my paranoia about the possibility that the recurring line "Your choices don't matter" is an attempt to bamboozle me. I'll take the game at face value and not sweat the choices, and if this is an attempt to lull me into a false sense of security, well, consider me lulled.

I saw somewheres that if you beat the optional superboss in Chapter 1 then it gets commented on at some point in Chapter 2. So if you have an endgame Chapter 1 save and still haven't beaten Jevil, maybe give it another try if that's the sort of thing you want to seek out?

I played the first hour or so of Chapter 2 yesterday, and (a) it's good and (b) I already have a lot of questions about our fluffy boy Ralsei.

Also, regarding the number of chapters, whats the deal with that announcement talking about chapters 1-5, but there being 7 chapter slots in the menu?

Whoever Smeltarune Deltarune

Well, I've finished chapter 2. This plot sue is thickening, huh!
King resented the lightners for abandoning his people, the toys in the unused classroom, and intended to destroy the world in retaliation. Queen still intended to help lightners, but because she's the internet, she couldn't understand their preference for freedom and tendency toward self-torment, and didn't really grasp the consequences of this imbalance between light and dark.

The Roaring Knight is the one opening up fountains, but it seems that merely opening them is the end of their involvement, whether or not any darkner understands the significance of the act. Queen was able to infer that any lightner could in principle open up a fountain, because lightners possess Determination (there's that word again). Berdly was about to try when Ralsei stopped him.

The ending of chapter 2 seems to hint that Kris, when not under the player's influence, is the Knight, but at the same time introduces another possibility, that there is no single Knight. Then again, Kris is the only human in town, and while the significance of the correspondence between a human soul and player control as indicated by a little red heart is something the game doesn't want us to forget about (especially with all the ominous Undertale references all around), it also hasn't really given much of an indication of its meaning in this context.

Appearances can be deceiving. The game wants us to worry about Kris, about what kind of troubles they have and about what they get up to when we're not driving them. But the same twisting of expectations that makes the jokes land so well also means we can continue to be surprised at how anything dramatic plays out.

So you could say I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.

The references in this game, though. Not only the name of the band but also one of the songs they play is a Homestar Runner shout-out. Anybody know what the "big shot" sample from the Spamton battle is taken from?

I've seen people claim that it's a reference to this 1997 soda commercial featuring Mike Ditka:

The only issue is, uh, I don't hear the longer version of the sample anywhere in there ("now's your chance to be a big shot"). I wouldn't be surprised if Toby recorded the sample himself tbqh (it kinda sounds like Jevil's voice in a way).

Reading a bunch of folks' fan theories, I've come to the conclusion that Undertale has broken a lot of people's brains.

I still see a lot of fan theories that are like "Kris is evil" or "the player is an evil" or whatever, but the ending of Chapter 2 has me even less convinced of those ideas. The boundary between the SOUL and Kris seems to be much fuzzier than it was in Undertale. Kris is a character with an established history and a boatload of emotional baggage and traumas to deal with, and has certainly been engaging in self-harm long before we entered the equation in Chapter 1.

Like, the ending of chapter 2 shows us that Toriel is well aware of their trauma and history of behavioral issues, and is rather sensitive to them. She knows Kris well enough to suspect that they escaped out the bathroom window, and in turn make up an excuse to check outside.

Also, Kris leaving the front door ajar (and tires slashed) before creating the fountain makes it seem like they want Undyne to be aware of the dark worlds (see also: the dialogue options when talking to her), so it's very hard for me to say Kris was being malicious when they did that. Oh, and Kris appears to willingly put their heart back in, and also somehow possesses enough determination without it to create a dark fountain. Stuff's weird.

If nothing else, I think the body/SOUL dichotomy is being/will be used to explore Kris's mental health, traumas, etc. in a fantastical-ized fashion (akin to Cloud in FF7), rather than just being the allegorically limp meta-reveal it was in Undertale.

Anyhow, who else is ready to see Susie teach Toriel how to wavedash in order to defeat an off-brand Yoshi?

and oh dear Toriel's gonna run into Ralsei isn't she? (that's gonna be fun)

so stoked for chapters 3-5

So this is hitting Switch.... today! (maybe even by the time you read this post?!)

Glad I waited to play it, though I was worried I'd have to wait longer. Good turnaround time, Toby.

Finished a playthrough of Chapter 2 (after doing a quick purely pacifist run of Chapter 1 to refresh my memory) and my first thought is that more polished and ambitious than Chapter 1. The new party options are neat, and the change of pace in the second act (just Kris and Noelle) was a surprising but entertaining sequence.

But my second thought, is that while Chapter 1 seemed to be stressing the point that 'your choices don't matter', Chapter 2 rather quickly shows that to be misdirection. So many of your choices from Chapter 1 matter here, some more than others. I wonder just how ambitious Toby Fox plans on being with the full game, just how much all the choices you'll make will affect things? There might be a lot more than just a 'Pacifist' and 'Genocide' ending once it's all done.

Chapter 2's optional superboss has some hella catchy music, but ultimately I found him a bit easier than Jevil in Chapter 1. Jevil took me four or five tries to get down, while I got this putz on my second attempt.

But I have seen some things about something called a Snowgrave route, and what I've managed to glean from it is that Toby Fox still loves making effed up vidyagame choices as ever.

I think that's referring more to the main structure of the plot. There are many callbacks in chapter 2 to different ways chapter 1 can play out, but structurally it's all optional dialog and side scenes.

We beat it tonight. I love Queen so much. I have no idea what to think of the ending of this just yet especially with only vague memories of Ch 1. I fully expect to replay the entire thing in one sitting once all chapters are released someday.

Also, regarding the number of chapters, whats the deal with that announcement talking about chapters 1-5, but there being 7 chapter slots in the menu?
I caught this too! Maybe the last ones aren't being developed yet but are planned?

The references in this game, though. Not only the name of the band but also one of the songs they play is a Homestar Runner shout-out.
I think I missed this, what was it?

Replayed through Chapter 1 and, uh, somehow defeated the optional boss there on my first try despite never beating him before. I wasn't expecting that tbqh.

A lotta stuff in chapter 1 hits different in light of chapter 2.

Anyhow, I just want to take a moment here to say that I don't like the bulk of fan theories (in general) because they tend to gravitate towards the grimmest stuff. I mean, Toby's no stranger to having the void howl at us laughing, but the sheer proliferation of theories that boil down to Kris/Ralsei/the player is evil/dastardly/sus is kinda exhausting. While I'm certain those characters have other layers to them, and can't see any of them doing a heel-turn.

Not to mention those characters in particular refer to themselves as 'Sweet Cap'n Cakes', which is more than a little on the nose.

I've only just started Chapter 2, but from Chapter 1 I thought that "your choices don't matter" was part of an overall strategy to get some distance from Undertale. Fox wanted to do more with the characters, yes, but I seem to recall him saying that he felt stuck doing the FIGHT/SPARE dichotomy thanks to Undertale's runaway success. I for one appreciated the bit at the end of Chapter 1 where part of the "moral of the story" is that sometimes fighting is the right thing to do - lest people take Fox's ethos to be that punching Richard Spencer is a bad thing.
