"It feels different this time..." - The new Doctor Who Thread

Yeah. He'd already been doing this shit by the time he was cast on Doctor Who, too. Ugh.

Kazin

Yeah, there have been stories going around for years about Barrowman. I could have sworn I posted about it in the old thread, but I don't recall if I did or not for sure... Also, the guy who played Adam in Dalek was convicted of assaulting women at a nightclub a few years back, too...

It's weird watching that clip. I absolutely would in no way find that funny, much less regale anyone with the story of it afterwards.

Other than the police, obviously.

Not to make light of the situation, but just wanted to say it struck me that Kazin's avatar expression seems appropriate for this whole discussion.

Patrick Troughton has the most delightful, malleable face, good for any situation.

I wonder if this kind of environment is in any way related to why Eccleston quit the show and wrote it off for over a decade.
Yeah, this quote in particular from Eccleston in the article you linked strikes me as relevant: "I thought if I stay in this job, I'm going to have to blind myself to certain things that I thought were wrong."

Yeahhhh, that really reads more pointedly in light of all this Clarke stuff coming to light. :/

If that's what it was, it's crazy that they lost Eccleston and kept Clarke. It does reflect very positively on Eccleston.

Would it be crazy, though? Predatory men are always protected/treated as though they're harmless and women are constantly driven out of their workplaces/industries regardless of culture, job, etc. It's distressingly normal.

@Kazin, do you know what's going on with Big Finish's Torchwood: Absent Friends release? What I'm gathering is that this audio drama (which was to include David Tennant along with the Torchwood cast) was produced and scheduled for release in May, Big Finish took preorders, and now they're neither releasing it nor issuing refunds. Apparently this is due to an order from the BBC not to release it(?) as John Barrowman's in it and this is part of the fallout from the recent revelations about his behavior on the DW set. Do I have all of that right / is there more to the story?

Anyway, here's a five hour video about why the Chibnall era is bad. It's very thorough (obviously), well reasoned and pretty entertaining.

I can understand not releasing it (and good on them for that), but not issuing refunds?! How do they justify that?! So, no... I've not heard a word about it. I'm extremely out of the loop when it comes to extended universe stuff these days... After poking around on Twitter, apparently Big Finish will issue you a refund if you request one from them. Seems shady, but at least there's that, I suppose.

Five hours?! I'll take your word for it lol. Granted, it'd have never been on my radar since I assume all those "Why Doctor Who Sucks Now" videos are all Not My Doctor anti-Whittaker stuff.

Thanks for looking into it, Kazin. I guess it's good that people can get refunds, but super weird that it's not just an automatic thing.

As for that video, I won't push anyone to watch it because five hours is patently absurd, but I will say it doesn't contain a fleck of anti-Whitaker or misogynist sentiment. It's focused entirely on the quality of the writing, the thinness of the characters and the shallow and/or self-defeating nature of the themes the series tries to present.

Last night I was in bed, lights out, eyes closed when I started thinking about how I don't own any Sixth Doctor stories, and it began to bother me more and more. Cut to ten minutes later, and me sitting at my computer at 2:30am in a dark room, ordering a copy of Trial of a Time Lord... Only then could I find peace, and slumber. I'm an adult!

At least watch Revelation of the Daleks and Vengeance on Varos, his best stories! Though the first four episodes of Trial are pretty good, at least. I'm curious what you'll think of the rest of that season. It's... weird, to say the least lol

I just really like the clip I've seen of him giving the Time Lords what for, lol

In all my travelling throughout the universe, I have battled against evil, against power-mad conspirators. I should have stayed here. The oldest civilization: decadent, degenerate, and rotten to the core. Power-mad conspirators, Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen - they're still in the nursery compared to us. Ten million years of absolute power. That's what it takes to be really corrupt.

Mmm, that's good stuff.

Trial of a Time Lord hasn’t arrived yet, so naturally I’m rewatching An Adventure in Space and Time. This is a film that has to cover so much historical ground in so little screen time that it practically sprints, condensing even the monumental composition of the DW theme music and the creation of the TARDIS takeoff sound effect to about ten seconds total and intercutting them between lines of a scene of Hartnell accepting the part to save time. And yet they still found time to devote a line to calling out the shapeliness of Waris Hussein’s buttocks. Never change, Mark Gatiss.

Wait, what other stories has he written, again?

...

Actually, maybe do change.

When I was a teenager I was lucky to be able to acquire a massive collection off-air recordings of Who episodes, some of which hadn't even been out on VHS at that point. I was able to watch pretty much all the classic stories in varying quality, including most of T. Baker and Pertwee bar a couple of missing ones. However there were a few gaps, notably the entire Trial season which for some reason the collector I got them off had never bothered tracking down.

So for the longest time the Trial held a huge amount of mystique for me, although I'd heard it was pretty bad. Eventually the Trial boxset came out on DVD and by that time I had money and could finally experience it for myself.

And you know what...erm, yeah. It is pretty bad. I guess that's what happens when you end up ditching an entire season's worth of scripts months into pre-production and then have to come up with a whole new story arc on the fly and then the star writer dies and the script editor quits and blocks any use of his final scripts and you have to use one by Pip & Jane Baker instead.

Kazin

I don't think Pip & Jane did too badly considering they had a weekend to write that last episode and couldn't refer to Holmes's original script, but yeah... it's not great. I just watched through it a couple weeks ago, and other than improving 6's characterization to be a little less of an ass, I like it even less than season 22.
