"It feels different this time..." - The new Doctor Who Thread

Apparently David Tennant is the 14th Doctor, though, and is in at least three episodes: BBC announcement

David Tennant is the 14th Doctor, and Ncuti Gatwa is the 15th Doctor. Though it could just be RTD lying, which he did a lot of back in the day lol
Yeah, RTD used the press very effectively back in the day. There was the whole The Next Doctor thing, and the regeneration fake out, just off the top of my head. That said, Moffatt opened the door for this one in The Day Of The Doctor.

That said, plenty of people have said they'd like to see a team up between the Doctor and his future self. Looks like we might be getting it.

The clothes thing does annoy me though, the Doctor should be walking round in the wrong clothes. It's just the way it's done

I'm annoyed at moving backwards like this being situated as OMG WHAT A SHOCK DOC WHO DOES IT AGAIN rather than the show trying to claw back relevance after a series of missteps. But then, I'm also glad the show will get a chance to correct the absolutely wretched way Donna was treated and give her some agency in how she goes out.

Though I haven't watched the show in years so my opinion doesn't really matter much at this point.

You haven't missed much. And yeah, it seems very regressive, even if Donna's crap exit gets fixed. It's a dumb joke, but I tweeted about it last night - it was "I didn't like the Chibnall era, but good thing this show changes things up, so I can get something new every few years. Now to take a huge sip of coffee and watch the regeneration scene". Having slept on it, I still feel that way. They're going to have to do a great job convincing me bringing back Tennant was a good idea, because I'm surprisingly hostile to it.

It's funny, I've never been as much of a fan of Ten as other people, and my opinion hasn't changed over time. But RTD is back, and I respect him and want to see what that mad bastard has planned. He's a great writer, and playing with expectation and tabloid-baiting is what he does best. I'm excited!

Despite this being his best performance (him dancing to that Rasputin song genuinely made me laugh), I didn't really like Sacha Dhawan as the Master. A huge, huge part of it is the scripts he was given, so I assume he made the acting choices he did to at least try and enjoy himself by just devouring the scenery, but he was so over the top, I found him too cheesy. Which I guess is a good homage to the Ainley/Roberts Masters, I suppose lol. Still, I've seen a few "he's the best Master ever!" takes on Twitter, and just... no. Michelle Gomez is. Dhawan had a hard act to follow, for sure, but I think he's my least favorite Master of the new series (though I'll take him over Ainley any day. Sorry Ainley lol)

I'm really salty about this era, sorry everyone.

Michelle Gomez kind of ruined the role for everyone. Good luck topping that.

She's just fantastic, she should be in everything.

Who even liked Vinder?

Me! I liked him! But I agree that his part in this ep could've been played by literally anyone, so *shrug*. Assuming it was a random choice based on which previous guest stars were available.

I wish she'd had a better showrunner.

I assume this is pretty much where we're all at. Jodie's aces, and I really hope we get to see more of her in some future team-up being written by someone who can actually pump out decent dialog and plotting.

called that ending, even down to the final words.

I mean, once it was going where it went, that line was pretty much a foregone conclusion. NGL, obvious contrivance or no, it still made me smile.

I do agree that it feels like a bit of a cop-out for the show to say "hey, our writing's gonna be good again, honest" by simply throwing a bunch of characters and visuals on screen from back when people liked the writing. But I expect it'll be fun anyway.

Throwback new logo and finally some fucking Ncuti content:

Woot. I'm not sure about that mustache, though, lol. But Ncuti is amazing, I'm sure he'll be fantastic. (Also I had no idea his name was pronounced that way.)

Also, lowkey unsettling to hear the word "Disney" associated with this franchise in any way whatsoever.
I've not seem Ncuti in anything yet, but the dude has charisma and it's reassuring that they're restating what the Doctor is after an era where they didn't seem to understand that basic thing. Also the subtle Scottish burr there is pretty cool.

I'm only familiar with Ncuti from Sex Education and he's great there, I'm sure he'll make a great Doctor.

But man, mark me down as another who thought Whitaker was let down by her showrunner, hopefully she'll get to return again at some point.

It happens, unfortunately. There was a lot of potential there, but Chibnall seemed to not understand the character of the Doctor so she never got to shine.

This is Doctor Who's strongest suit. When the Doctor regenerates the show reboots. For those who hated the current Doctor it's a blessing, for those who loved them it's a horrible loss. It keeps the series alive.

Except this time it's rebooting into literally an older version of itself. Tennant and Davies are back. It feels regressive to me. They have a lot of ground to gain, imo...

Doctor Who with a decent effects budget?

GOOD LORD.

Maybe I'm just easy to please, but I think the show already looks pretty good as it is -- we've come a long way from the rickety CGI of Eccleston's tenure. So the idea of more money going into the effects budget doesn't really impress me.

I'd rather they spend millions hiring some decent writers, wakka wakka wakka

Yeah, Doctor Who is at its best when it's not being "epic". It's the small that it values. Sounds like they're about to spend a shitload of cash on its weakest part.
