Oh, I fully expect Tennant to be back for the 60th, but as the Tenth Doctor, as others have said. That it's right after Whittaker's exit makes the timing a little awkward for her, but I hope she returns as well. I'd love to see Thirteen get out from under Chibnall's shadow. More Doctors is always better. Bring me more Doctors!!!!

Just pick Jo Martin for heaven's sake, what more does the woman need to do?

I do wonder if Jo Martin's Fugitive Doctor was set up as a sort of River Song-esque "other time-traveler" that the Doctor can have occasional intersecting adventures with, even very casual "multi-Doctor" stories without needing the hoopla and money required to bring back a previous leading actor. If that's the case, I doubt she's headed for the main chair, but could be in a place to have an enduring influence on the show as a longer-term part-timer.

I feel like if she isn't cast as the 14th Doctor somehow, she will go straight to Big Finish and will never be referenced in the show again, since she's Chibnall's creation and he's leaving in two episodes.

Speaking of, the next episode airs April 17th, and is called Legend of the Sea Devils.

Probably everyone who cares has seen this by now, but yes, I am very here for Chinese Pirate Queen times. The current character and plot arcs may be a mess, but hey, fun pirate nonsense!

It'll have a decent chance of being the best Doctor Who pirate-themed episode, because the show has a horrible track record when it comes to pirates imo lol. "The Smugglers" from the First Doctor era is just about his most forgettable serial (though it being 100% missing doesn't help, but then again the First and Second Doctors have some missing episodes that haven't even been animated that are absolute crackers), and "The Curse of the Black Spot" from the Eleventh Doctor era is boring crap, too (many people rank it as the worst Matt Smith episode).

It also has a decent chance of being the best Sea Devils episode, too, since the only good thing about the Third Doctor's "The Sea Devils" is the Master (though I think I'm in the minority on that one, since plenty of people seem to like that slog of a serial), and the Fifth Doctor's "Warriors of the Deep" is shockingly bad.

So, you know, aim low, I guess haha

BTW,I just read the novelization of "The Day of the Doctor". It was fun! The gimmick of the books chapters being numbered in chronological order re: the Doctor's timeline but being presented in dramatic order was fun -particularly Chapter Nine. It does a great job trying to iron out inconsistencies among the doctor's continuity, but it also embodies all of what many people found exasperating about Moffat's run. No wonder people have complained about it (I liked it).

Good book, worth reading.

I adore that book. If you don't like Moffat then I guess it won't be a fun time but it's a hugely inventive book that fleshes out a great story brilliantly.

Spoilers for the 4/17/22 episode called Legend of the Sea Devils:

So... why were the Sea Devils in this? I mean, I guess they wanted to make a watery episode so they chose Doctor Who's water monster, but they didn't act much like any other episode with the Sea Devils. The one just... teleported around, and the editing was pretty hard to follow, too, especially with the big sword fight on the ship at the end. The Sea Devils have an amazing capacity to just be in shit episodes of Doctor Who, it's wild lol. Though I guess Warriors of the Deep is still worse.

The Yaz/Doctor ship gets explictly shot down by the Doctor. They don't even fucking kiss. What was the point? One more fucking Chibnall episode and we're free!

RE: the next time trailer: why oh why can't Russell T Davies be writing that episode with those characters? Chibnall's going to write them worse than they ever got in the 80s, dammit.

Waste of my time. I knew I was in for a bad time when the opening scene made no sense. So the father's duty is to guard the statue, and he says to the son "If something happens to me, then the duty falls to you. Stay here!" But the threat is at the statue right now. If something happens to the father, which it does, and the son's standing around at home waiting for him to come back, then...

Anyway, I don't care to discuss the rest of the episode.

One more fucking Chibnall episode and we're free!

Hooray!

Yeahhhhhh, so. Well. There were a few nice pirate ship and sword-y moments I suppose.

It's a bit baffling that they took a historical figure known for being an amazingly successful pirate captain, who at one point had command over hundreds of ships and thousands of men, and made her plot contribution be having her entire crew and family captured off-screen and having no alternative but to pay a bunch of money to get them back.

I'm not so worried about the plot being nonsense, I'd forgive that in an otherwise entertaining Who episode, but as Kazin noted in addition to the generally uninspiring Chibnall writing the editing for this just seemed really... not good. The action scenes had no flow, stuff generally just seemed to happen spontaneously and people ended up in various places they needed to be with little attempt at visual continuity. Seems like all the editing/effects time and budget went to CG for the flying ship and sea monster (which were fine) leaving nothing for the rest of the scenes.

Having read around on Twitter the past few days, scuttlebutt is that the episode was originally going to be longer, but for some reason was edited down to 45ish minutes. Not sure if that's true or why that'd even happen in the first place, but it'd explain a lot about why the episode was so scattershot, even for the Chibnall era.

This article may point to what happened - apparently the original New Year's special was scrapped and Chibnall wrote the replacement in a week, and there were other production issues. I'm not even clear if that's what happened - the way the article reads, it could have been Legend of the Sea Devils that was rewritten in a week, which would kinda explain a lot about that episode. Who knows! If Eve of the Daleks was the one written within a week, I think it turned out fairly well, even if it wasn't great.

Welp, this makes it pretty clear we're not going to see Jo Martin on screen again, I'd say (spoilers for series 12 to the end of Jodie Whittaker's tenure, fyi):

Not an enormous surprise, really, since it's Chibnall after all, but relegating Jo Martin to Big Finish before Jodie's final episode gives you an idea where the character is going (nowhere). I mean, she could show up in the finale, we already know the Master does, but she is certainly not the 14th Doctor, for one thing lol

They announced the new Doctor:

He was about the only thing that would get me to look up from whatever game I was playing while my wife watched Sex Education, so that's a good sign lol. Honestly surprised they didn't cast a woman, though. Kinda wish they would have. Oh well, we finally have a Doctor of color! Also I'm older than the Doctor, ughhhhhhhhhhhh

Heh, I’m older than Jodie and Matt, welcome to the club.

(Though hell, even Tennant’s only got like 6 years on me, so I never really had a preconception of the Doctor being a lot older, Capaldi aside.)

Is there going to be a new special where the New Doctor is introduced? Is the Sea Pirates the last episode with Jodie?
