I'm newish to watching DW. Is it usual to announce the new Doctor before the regeneration episode?

I would assume having the regeneration episode be the introduction to the fans would be more impactful.

Either way, I'm excited for the new Doctor and hope he does well.

Yes, the new Doctor is usually announced in the press months ahead of time. I think it would be a little distracting during the regeneration scene to have the audience going "wait, who is that? oh oh oh I think I know him, isn't that the guy from--" etc.

One case where the incoming Doctor's identity being known ahead of time even contributed to the impact was the brief, eyes-only surprise cameo of Peter Capaldi in The Day of the Doctor, one episode before he was known to be appearing as the Twelfth Doctor. At least in my theater it got a big cheer because everyone already knew who he was.

Oh, to be in a theater watching Day of the Doctor, every time it's brought up I feel a pang of jealousy. The first time I watched it, the audio slowly drifted out of sync on the "acquired" version I had and by the end, I saw the surprise guest before I heard him as intended lol. Lucky Vaeran!

I was fairly drunk in Doha's airport when that was on, I had to watch it on catch-up. Seeing everybody's excitement about it online didn't help.

I always thought the Land of Fiction was really clever in that it wasn't where the fictional stuff is real, it's that there's a prescribed set of things that can't be deviated from and everything there is like a robot. It's an atypical way to deal with the idea.

I am thrilled at the first announcement and intrigued by the second. Like I said on Discord, in RTD I trust, so I know whatever he's planning it's gonna be good.

Oh, you're right, weird, it is gone - it was a tweet announcing the actor Bernard Cribbons would be reprising his role of Wilfred Mott, but did so by saying "If the Tenth Doctor is back, his killer can't be far behind!" hence me saying "geez" lol

That's going to be really interesting to see. Doctor Who is often a problem for videogames as you can't have the Doctor blasting stuff so I'll be interested to see what genre it ends up. They picked the best Doctor possible, so that's a great start.
