It’s Time, Once Again, for An-I-man-I-acs!

After a 22-year-layoff, Animaniacs is back, on Hulu. A 13-episode season dropped today, and it is unsurprisingly chock full of Trump jokes and snark about reboots.

I’m two episodes in, and it hasn’t missed a beat after all these years, IMO. So far it looks like the focus is on the Warner Brothers (and the Warner Sister!) and Pinky and the Brain. The original cast is back, and obviously a lot of love and attention was given to this.

it owns.

So, have you watched it yet? What do you think?

The trailer seemed really dull, critics seem pretty down on it but my friends seem to love it. The criticisms I saw seem like they’d apply to the original show as well. I’ll probably watch an episode with husband tonight.

I’m anticipating that it will be fine but not something to watch when I’m in a cynical mood.

I am SO EXCITED for this as I loved the original series. We don't have Hulu and this weekend is busy so I plan to try a free week trial or whatever they have over Thanksgiving so we have time to watch them all over a few days.

The first episode was okay. The animation looks so much cheaper than the lavish originals, but cartoons as a whole will never look as good as they did in the 90’s ever again, so it’s not all the show’s fault. Those Seth Meyers jokes were brutal.

I've been laughing with it! The first episode felt like a strong start, but it kind of wore out its welcome as the episodes went on. Not really the kind of show that lends itself to binging as the frantic slapstick gets a bit wearing. It feels like the kind of show that's better digested in thirty minute chunks when I randomly catch in on TV. I'm taking a mid-season break and coming back to it later on this week.

Lady Ostrich said she liked the Warner sections are better than the Pinky and the Brain ones, and...I think I agree? I definitely felt a sense of "Oh boy, here we go again..." every time their theme song came on.

I've enjoyed it so far! My 3 year old tries to sing the theme song now, which is kind of impressive considering she's only heard it like 4 times.

I’m the opposite. I like the Warner stuff a lot but they always feel like B-tier Looney Tunes to me. Pinky and the Brain’s more narrative and character-driven formula feels like a better fit for these shows’ 90s-era cynicism and light satire.

It’s kind of weird to have very good New Looney Tunes and masterful Mickey shorts that feel very up-to-date and influenced by the intervening years of animation, then Animaniacs comes back only slightly changed. Though “shameless rehash” is very on-brand for that aforementioned cynicism, so it works.

Teg’s analysis is spot-on. I do think it’s good, possibly better than the old show, and even better-looking except for the stiff pilot. Way better than I expected. But it feels dated.

Hello, I do an Animaniacs podcast called Animanichat. I hate Animaniacs and having to watch every episode of it is torture to me, please give it a listen.

This reboot is as poor as I expected on the Warners' side, but the Pinky and The Brain shorts are surprisingly extremely entertaining. I think PaTB might be evergreen.

I thought they were all collectively the Animaniacs?

lol at “kids these days with their phones have no attention span” in an age of two hour YouTube documentaries and five hour Twitch streams.

We’re not that far yet but I’m sure it will inspire similar feelings.

Anyway still enjoying it otherwise!

I watched the first two or three episodes. It gave me similar vibes to the Rocko's Modern Life sequel that got made recently. Which is that I respect what it does and how faithful it was to the tone of the source material, but that I've grown up and grown past this show of my childhood. And that this show really is for little kids, with enough bones thrown to the parents to keep them from going insane when their kids are watching it. I'd love to be able to show kids this, they'd probably love it like I did.

Holy crap, Starbox and Cindy is a delight. It’s like a window into an alternate universe where this reboot is more on the level of the new Mickey shorts instead of the cynical rehash that it is. Though I am still enjoying the cynical rehash.

I know, it's just weird that there's so little of it in this first season. I expected at least a second appearance of the thing from that second spoiler.
Yeah, definitely a weird thing to introduce, especially so late in the season. Made me miss the spin-off, which I’ve started rewatching. I still adore Pinky and the Brain.

Julia would have made for a much better antagonist than Snowball. “Brain’s crazy ex” is a pretty crummy angle but I like the idea of a rival would-be ruler who’s ostensibly a better person than Brain and who wants better for Pinky.

Sorry for the plug but Animanichat is a thing and is now available on your favourite podcast app. Me and dear dear Luke are reviewing every single episode of this cartoon which I don't like very much at all, whereas he is a big fan. I like to think it makes for some fun analysis, or "funalysis".

Season 2 is out I think? Probably not going to have time to watch it for a bit but my Hulu subscription ends on the 20th so I better get on it...
