I'm sure I'll REgret this - Going through the Resident Evil Games

I thought this game was easier... But this fat zombie is indestructible! (Also vomiting zombies and a screamer? What is this Left 4 Dead?!)

I think it's pretty realistic that it's a lot easier to find Herb on a college campus than it is... where ever else Leon and Helena go!! (I am being vague so as to not spoil the rest of their very stupid storyline)

Given what I have seen so far, and that this is a game wherein I fight the animated dead, realism isn't something I appreciate when it comes to healing item placement.

This has been true for the previous games but it feels particularly true here. The player feedback on whether bullets are working against some enemies is not good. I thought the fat zombo was immune for awhile. Same with the screamers. Nope they're just bullet sponges. Deborah, Helena's sister is a good example too, I think I wasted a lot of ammo before realizing that the only thing that matters in that fight is shooting one glowing spot. I thought I would have to clear all of those and then pile on the pain when she was huddled but doesn't seem to be the case.

Also, what sort of city in the USA has such an extensive set of catacombs beneath them?

I finished the Leon story and have moved on to the Chris story. And I think this is the first game in the series where they've done away completely with puzzles. I'm struggling to think of anything other than pushing an object out of the way that hardly can count as a puzzle. RE5 didn't have much either beyond finding x objects and putting them here and a couple sliding puzzles at the end. But there was nothing. And the transformation from Survival Horror to just Action seems complete. It's not that its even bad action but I don't think its what I want in a RE. I've missed reading emails and notes, rooting through ephemora to try and puzzle out what the story and background is. And that too is absent here. I think its a loss for the franchise.

What little experience I have with 6 (and to a lesser extent, 5) really bothered me with how they arbitrarily have bits where you're expected to fight things and bits where you're expected to flee, sometimes switching from one to the other in the same scene with no real indicator. Feels very written/directed by someone who doesn't understand the difference between a game and other forms of media. Main thing that's kept me from playing them, honestly.

As for American cities with weird underground sub-cities.. the main two I'm personally aware of are Atlanta and Seattle. Basically at some point both cities just kinda sank into the ground by a good story or so, people just kinda placed new roads at the new ground level, and kinda made their "Undergrounds" into tourist-y things. There's probably others.

I think the RE creators really liked the Matrix series. This isn't just impressions from RE6. Just something I think I forgot to mention during RE5 (and CV)

Completed the Chris storyline and am half way through the Jake one. So far the most difficult part in this game has been the snowmobile segment, where I died over a dozen times trying to navigate through a collapsing icescape. Over and over and over. With no clear indication of what I needed to be doing to avoid it. I eventually managed it in the most unrealistic way possible by slowing down and hugging what appeared to be a collapsing segment but it worked...

I have not been playing this on-line. Or at least I try to remember not it. Every time the game starts up and I load a save it makes you go through the options again. But it seems that not-only can you play co-op with a friend on your storyline but during the chapter segments when the storys overlap you can play with additional people? I suppose it might be possible for your to play with up to 3 of your friends but setting it up might be quite the chore.

I mostly noticed, when I failed to trigger off-line, because as soon as someone would join the game I immediately began hearing their audio. Which was annoying.

Good for Sherry Birkin being an immortal monster that can heal itself. I'm surprised the US government didn't kill her immediately. I'm a little confused now about why when Jake realizes Chris killed his dad he even cares. In the Chris arc there's a whole fight and Jake has a gun to Chris' head and says he should kill him. BUT, in the Jake arc he doesn't even know who his father is! He finds out when he is captured by Not-Ada (still wondering who that is, hoping the Ada arc clears it up...) and then imprisoned and experimented on. All he knows about his dad is that he had special blood and tried to destroy the world all of which he learns right before running into Chris and Piers again and then getting real mad about Chris killing his dad. Who he has already described as a 'deadbeat.' Its a a story beat that makes sense in the Chris arc but really stands out once you go through Jake's.

Finished the game. I think I enjoyed the Leon arc the most with Jake/Birkin second. I'd figured out the story by the time I got to Ada's at the end and her story really does start you in the deep end first. I hope I get to see more of Jake, Birkin, and Helena in the future but I'm not holding my breath.

This game really does highlight how action oriented the series moved. It's set piece after set piece, at times they don't even bother to place any enemies in-between. Just following 'hallways' between monster closets, boss battles, or vehicle sections. And none of it is bad. But I think I preferred the slower pace of earlier games and piecing the story together from all the found records.

After this I'm taking a break from RE. Playing through 7 games in six months or so is a lot.

I'll come back to it though. I am very curious about 7 and 8 as from what I picked up from the zeitgeist they're a return to the earlier style of games.

What the fuck did I just play?! I'm playing through that is already the intro and this is most on-edge of my seat I've been since I started playing these. The first-person is doing a lot of work here, and the sound design is great too.

SPOILERS if you haven't played this you should stop reading.

Just go ahead and have my arm removed in the first 30 minutes or so of the game!? I was not expecting that at all. Love that they give you a gun after that. Best of luck, buddy. You are going to need it. Really makes it clear that you are not an ass-kicker at all in this one.

I just finished RE8 for the first time. I liked it more than RE7, but I don't like either of them in comparison to RE 1-4.

Alcina Dimitrescu is immaculate character design. Her section at the beginning of the game was great. I love that she ducks to go through doors and throws furniture around. Really fun character. I wish I liked the entire game as much as her.

I hate the mushroom infection angle. For whatever reason moving away from the t-virus and zombies to a mushroom infection and fungus nextwork is a story angle that doesn't work for me. I also hate in RE7 that the pistol feels pretty worthless against mushroom infected and I need to use the shotgun.

I'm very aware that RE is not known for its stellar story telling. But the story that is established in RE 1-3 is something I enjoy on a B movie level.

The original RE games, 1-3, take inspiration from zombie movies (Romero in particular).

RE 7, taking inspiration from Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a change that I hate. As I said before I hate mushroom infected guys and mushroom bosses.

*I have not played original RE1 or CV. I need to finish RE0.

Mold being the culprit doesn't bother me anymore than the T virus or the G virus coming from leeches or whatever the ancient bug thing from RE4. I do think in whatever alternate world RE exists in there are WAY TOO many biologists intent on destroying the world...

At first the first person view seemed scary and for scripted stuff it is, Jack and the family get the jump on you. I was less worried about the Molds once I realized that the game always gives you not just a noise cue but a music cue if they're around and pursuing you. Whenever I heard it I just checked my six, before moving on.

The game is very generous with healing items and ammo, as long as you aren't being wasteful with either. I appreciate that they give enough chem supplies to help you out either way. They even give you a way to break stuff down if you need it for other reasons! Something I think I only used once...

I'm a little bummed by how quickly they undid the horror of being dismembered. I thought I was going to have to go through the game one handed, but they quickly show that no. The magic green herb can reattach a hand, or a leg, no problem! Is that the medicine or is it the medicine in combination with the mold?

I've fought Jack, a lot. Too many times it seems. I'm in touch with Zoe and off to find the stuff I need for a serum.

I wanted to add, that I do appreciate the return of puzzles. Even if it is something a simple as turning a piece of metal to cast a particular shadow. Or watching a video closely to see what I will soon be seeing myself. I hope there is more of this!
