I'm sure I'll REgret this - Going through the Resident Evil Games

RE4 remains much more action oriented than the games that came before it. Even when I am trying my damndest to sneak through. As soon as one of them yells and rushes me, I've got to rush through trying to avoid a horde of folks or using the least amount of ammo as possible to temporarily disable them and rush through the area trying to get to the next...

This problem seems slightly alleviated by the increased resources the game provides. If you do kill a zombie you're likely to get gunpowder which you can use to make some ammo. Not enough for me not to worry about my supplies. At least I don't have to worry about ink ribbons anymore!

I mean they're full of parasites that control their behavior, the scientific literature appears to call such animals 'zombies.'
Well maybe we need to get the scientific community to start calling cordyceps-controlled ants "plagas" instead

Did you say which version you're playing?

According to Steam I beat the original PC port in 2017. I played the GC original too but am sure I never made it even to the castle, maybe not even to the lake...

I am playing the 2023 remake.

RE1 and 2 are all about carefully conserving your resources and only taking on fights you have no way to avoid (and even then, you should at consider taking the hit and moving on if it's a one way trip). 3 is theoretically still doing this but gives you too much ammo and too many jam-packed hallways.

4 though is a game that does in fact expect you to kill absolutely everything that moves, probably with some combination of carefully aimed headshots and crazy wrestling moves. If your aim is generally good it SHOULD always give you enough ammo to keep things going. At least with the original? My understanding is that in 4R even your trusty barrel smashing knife can actually break or something?

I can assure you that RE4 Remake is still very much a "Kill absolutely everything that moves" kinda game. There's no shortage of ammo or stuff to craft ammo with, you can break barrels without using the knife, and while your knife can break you can acquire flimsier knifes that can double as crafting goods as well as repair your knife and upgrade it to be even better.

False played 2's remake which has its own design sense and game balance (and overall is tuned to be more in favour of tense scarcity) but for the original run of the series, I think resource conservation as a governing play model was over and done with after the very first game. You don't need to become a routing and enemy-weaving expert at RE2 the original for its sensibilities to reveal itself as the blockbuster action flick shooting gallery it aspires to be, where ammo is always plentiful and incentives aren't given for avoiding much of anything. Leon in that game is probably the most outrageously overequipped protagonist the series has had, where every single custom upgrade to his weapons feels superfluous and mean to the opposition instead of sorely needed and appreciated by the player; Claire doesn't lag behind much for her part. To my mind it's a formative scripture in excess that perhaps doesn't have that reputation because its exterior framework at a glance remains much the same.

I definitely remembering thinking that I needed to conserve ammo through the first half of PSX RE2, but maybe that was just me falling for the game's tricks? It's true that, by the time you get to the lab, the game has basically gone full-on action and you have enough grenade rounds to explode anything that moves.

Okay, and I think this isn't the first time I've been told this, I'm going to loosen up on my resource management.

I found myself easily running low on handgun and shotgun shells early on in Leon B but by the end I had more magnum bullets than I needed. Game gets easier as it goes on and by the end cleaning out entire rooms is a cinch.

Not play related but if you've been waiting to pick up RE: Revelations 1 or 2 on Steam (usually $19.99 each) they are on sale now for $4.99 each. Also Requiem is on sale too.

The first areas seem to be the roughest when it comes to resources. It also helps that every villager is basically a pinata. Also the treasure map pays for itself and going back and collecting treasures help.

I'm interested in the guns people decided to focus on? I got the shotgun have been using it for crowd control and then sniping headshots with the pistol closeup and the rifle from a distance (when possible).

I am not good using the knife, despite my attempts at using it or parrying things. I am better off running away.

Of course they announce a Code Veronica remake right after I beat the original! I liked the original. I like Claire. And its going to be in first person? That might be enough to get me to re-buy it.

Haven’t ever played the original but the remake looks really good! Genuinely excited for it (and to go through the original soon).

Intending to go though a series playthrough with my partner at some point as he’s never played through any of the RE games.

After actually watching the trailer I'm not sure this game is going to be in first-person. It just appears to be a cut-scene, or they could do what they did in RE3Remake where just the intro is first-person. Unless there is some other news out there that made it explicit.

I wouldn't bet on it being all in first person. RE3R had its intro in first person before switching to third; I suspect the same is happening here.

Played a lot the last few days posting some highlights. They really don't want you to trust Luis, do they? I like to think the giant lake monster is an overgrown albinoid (from CV). The president's daughter appears competent. Though I wish she could hold a gun, Lady knows Leon is dripping in weaponry. There is a section, in the castle I think, where she has to hold a bridge up and Leon has to run and do some things and then she gets attacked while Leon has to deal with the regenerating Plagas. That took me forever to get right. I'm guessing we never see her after this game, do we?

Oh hey, it's Ada! The loveable enemy with maybe a heart of gold? I'm sure she wants the plaga for only pure and good reasons, right?

If the Plagas and the T-virus are two completely different things then it is surprising how similar their clinical presentation is. From the diminished mental faculties of those newly infected to the more advanced manifestations. The phenotype is remarkably similar: large spikes and claws, multiple limbs, a profusion of eyes. What the T-virus does to a Tyrant are quite similar to what the Plagas did to Major Krauser. And the virus' presentation in Birkin and Saddler are equally similar!

I'm sure there's an essay on this out on the internet already but I didn't look for it.

I mean, a part of it is, of course, Resident Evil 4 sold really really really well, so all the RE games that followed copied stuff it did, regardless of how much sense it makes (including remakes of older games).

But also hey, who doesn't love a big claw?

More actually relevant, I don't think it's come up in this thread here but a significant percentage of RE4's monster designs and plot are lifted more or less directly (and admittedly even) from the manga Parasyte. Particularly the whole head-becomes-twitchy-long-freakin'-tentacles-with-blades deal.

The original Birkin monster in RE2 and the Nemesis in RE3 still had claws/teeth and giant eyes all over him. They're harder to see but they're there. From a lore standpoint I don't know if it makes sense from a design standpoint I think it makes sense. It fits with the aesthetic of RE. I'm a little surprised that for RE4 (and all the REs really... since from the first game they've had giant bugs/bug men) that they haven't leaned more into insect signifiers for their amalgamation/flesh horror monsters.

I've beat RE4, the # of callbacks to RE2 in Leon and Ada interactions was nice. The end battle was appropriately epic. I'm I correct that the # of puzzles in the remake was reduced from what was in the original? Did the original have the whole section with the blue lantern segment as Ashley and then as Leon? I don't know how people felt in 2004 but I think the Ashley segment was a nice break.

I've started RE5. I can only imagine all the commentary that came out about how racist the game was. Did anyone here play through this game with a friend either in the same room or on-line? How was that? Also, how could they just casually drop that Jill died off-screen?! Doing her dirty!

Some people talked about the racism and other people tried very hard to convince themselves that games aren't political. It wasn't a super mainstream discussion at the time, but people like Ta-Nehisi Coates definitely sounded the alarm (and were widely ignored).

The sad part is that RE5 is actually a super fun co-op game! I played through the whole thing with a buddy many years ago and had a great time (and I didn't even like OG RE4, whose mechanics this game mostly copies).

I am so curious to see if Capcom is going to try and salvage this one with a remake. I know they love money, but that's a steep hill to climb.

I played through RE5 on local co-op at release and had a great time, but it felt to me like the tipping point for a swing from survival horror to full action game. Also, my co-op partner's SO, who is a PoC and completely unplugged from video games and games crit, walked in while we were playing and sort of screwed up her face, paused, and said "So... you guys sure are shooting a whole lot of brown people, huh?"

I played RE5 locally with a friend. It was very fun! RE4 gameplay + co-op is a winning combination.

Yes, we talked a lot about how racist the game was when we were playing it. There are some particularly egregious parts a bit later on, too.

I think there's probably a reason the Code Veronica remake is being abbreviated as REV
(but it also provides them the opportunity to say "actually that was to make it fit in with the revelations games" if they decide to do a remake of 5)

Shooting from the back of a boat, shooting from the back of a truck, the only thing missing so far is shooting from an airplane!

Resident Evil 5 is done. I'm still upset about how things with Jill went down. At least they didn't kill her off. This game went along at a quick clip! I appreciated the variety of normal enemies and bosses. Normal plagas, I mean majinas. Big majinas. Tall giant majinasa, Bug majinas. Bigger bug maginas, lickers. I never felt bored having to face the same folks over and over again. The did a really good job with the AI pathing. I can only recall twice did Sheva get stuck and I had to back and figure out how to coax the machine to follow me. Once in the buried temple and once in the conveyer belt section on the ship at the end there.

The story is bonkers. But that seems to be the trend for these games.

I install 6 last night and when I started it up it told me that there were four different stories?! I panicked and so defaulted to Leon. Hope that was the right call... In good news, and I feel like they must have changed something. This is the first game where I can kick decently and the knife doesn't seem to be awkward as hell for me to use? Or maybe the practice in the last two games is actually paying off. Of course, they added the stamina bar to the kick... So I just can't spam it against zombos. I don't know if Leon stayed friends with Ashley but I don't think she's going to be appreciate him getting her dad killed...

Things I don't like so far: The elimination of the map in favor of a giant arrow that points in the direction you're supposed to go. The cellphone menu/interface. The need to preload your herbs in order to use it, and herbs and spray being in different inventory menus...
