Just remembered this was a thing and watched the first episode. The... editing maybe?.. and sets and such?.. often feel a little rough in the context of prestige fantasy TV, but I feel like this is more a consequence of being judged against bajillion-dollar franchises now dominating the format than them being actively bad. The characters take a moment but already started to grow on me in one episode, so I expect they'll be fun to hang out with. Definitely good enough to keep me watching for now at any rate.

I don't think it's really aiming to be prestige TV. If it got too fancy it would grate against the original. As it is, it feels pretty much in line: a little cheesy, with a setting that was only ever sketched in, so they can pretty much do whatever they want.

I just watched the first episode of this, and I love it. It almost reminds me of The Princess Bride. After years of fantasy TV and movies taking their cues from Game of Thrones, with all of its grimdark self-importance, it’s an incredible breath of fresh air to see a fun, swashbuckling adventure. It’s also really to the show’s credit that two of the primary characters are a pair of young women in love with each other, and, rather than spending a whole season on will-they-won’t-they, queer-baiting, gal-palling ambiguity, they kiss in the first episode.

Well that, uh, got a little grim in episode three. Hope it doesn’t just stay that way the rest of the way through.

Also the selection of outro songs is… something.
