I had a good feeling! Celebrating 40 Years and 108 JRPGs of Destiny

Another one I never played, and always wanted to. I assume, my laptop is far away from being able to emulate the xbox 360, so that will stay that way, until it, maybe, hopefully, reaches Steam.

It certainly always looked appealing.

One of my remaster hopes and dreams is Mistwalker's works, including Lost Odyssey. Would love to give it a proper go someday.

It's a weird twist of irony/fate that a game that only exists because of Microsoft, is also essentially unplayable and consigned to the wastebin of history because of Microsoft.

Never played the game, and probably never will, but I know a few people who swear up and down by it.
The load times were so long...
360's intentional choice to have a HDD-less SKU was so brutal to that entire generation, and I'll never forgive them for it.

I think I owned this. I don't remember if I ever played it. It is certainly gone now though.

I was always kind of intrigued by this one, but I’ve never XBox’d, so it remains out of reach.

I never played Lost Odyssey due to not having a 360, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Strange that it was never ported to PC.

Yeah, mark me down as another who always wanted to get around to this one but just... didn't. Maybe someday!

I don't think I have a copy of it shrink-wrapped on my shelf, but knowing me, I still might find otherwise if I went looking.

I checked and looks like I got this for free in some monthly Xbox Live giveaway at some point and never played it because I hadn't heard of it. But thanks to these post I'll put it in my queue to try, sounds interesting!

And seems like people are talking like it was only physical so FYI it's digital as well. But you will need some form of Xbox to play.

It also runs quite a bit better depending on which Xbox you have - even the meager Xbox One manages to boost performance a bit, and the Series X keeps it locked at 30.

As for the game, I've weirdly bounced off it a few times (got to the second disc and stopped for whatever reason), but I want to beat it. It just keeps suffering the fate most games do with me - too many games vying for my ever-limited time. First world problems and all that!

Their first two systems are legit great. The original in particular made for an awesome emulation machine. The chutzpah kicked in with the One, and I haven't bought one since with all their mismanagement of the brand. (I do own several XB1 systems, but only because a pawn shop was getting rid of "broken" stock. Turns out not all of it was broken!)

Speaking of which... Sony and Nintendo definitely have their periods of "full of it" as well. I feel like they all need humbling from time to time.

lmao I've owned nearly every single gaming console for the last 40 years in one form or another. And only one of them caught fire during normal use and threatened to burn my house down. And then its maker had the gall to lie to my face about why it happened.

I’ve wanted to play Lost Odyssey for a number of years. I still have one of my Xbox 360’s in a box, though I don’t have any clue what state it would be in now. If it and Blue Dragon came to any modern storefront, I would buy them in a heartbeat. Not a whole lot of big RPG’s like that anymore.

Yeah, it would be nice in this new era of Xbox (or whatever it is they're calling it now) to get those games on PC or other storefronts. I can actually potentially see it happening.

Yikes. Which model, if you don't mind me asking? You know, for a friend.

Nearly all of the OG Xboxes, especially if you bought within the first 3 or so years, had an inherent design flaw where the internal PSU they used, the power cable plug was free floating over the circuitboard and only attached at the electrical connection points. If you plugged and unplugged your xbox occasionally -- to reposition around your house, or take elsewhere for lan parties -- that was enough to weaken the sodder points and cause a short. This is why they did a "recall" on the cables and sent OG Xbox owners new cables in the mail that had a circuit interruptor attached. They blamed the cable, but real culprit was the cheap PSU, and the cable was just a cheap way for them to paper over the whole issue and prevent more houses from burning down when a short happened.

Later Xboxes had huge external PSUs because instead of just making sure their engineering was good from the beginning, they decided it was easier to just do that incase they had the same problem again. It's cheaper for a user to send in a PSU brick than the whole console.

Boy I sure am glad we're relitigating the console wars in this...
*squints*
...best JRPG thread?

Could we... not?

Information received. Will keep in mind for some of my older systems.

Anyway, how 'bout them JRPGs?! :p

Microsoft's 360-era strategy of backing up a dumptruck full of money to commission exclusives from some of Japan's most accomplished developers resulted in some legitimate bangers, of which Lost Odyssey is unquestionably one; and thanks to their platform's particular approach to backwards compatibility, most of them have only gotten better with time, provided you've got the requisite hardware. That they then went on to lose the console war proves that you can't buy something, but I'm not sure what exactly it is they proved you can't buy.

Lost Odyssey is even Final Fantasyer than Final Fantasy was at the time, though I think the really eccentric/horny character designs show that Hironobu Sakaguchi, while certainly a powerhouse of a director, was not able of eliciting his team to reproduce all the sauce of Old Square.

I want to revisit it someday. But there are too many great RPGs out there as it is, with more coming out all the time. The Great Console RPG Famine is long behind us, but for some, the scars still linger.

From what I've heard from interviews from other Square vets is that Sakaguchi's main superpower was on the producer side. Getting everyone organized and working. When Square exiled him, they lost their soul and became literally and figuratively aimless since nobody at the company knew how to corral a dev team towards completing a good game in a timely manner.

It kinda always made sense to me that Mistwalker never took off hard, or was able to immediately replicate the same magic. Because if his power is getting other people on track, the people he commands still has to do the hard work of making the actual game. And a studio cobbled together in a short period of time just was never going to be able to recreate the magic of the talent and teamwork that he'd spent a decade and a half cultivating at Square. But they still did a darn good job in the attempt ofc.

For my money, The Last Story is Mistwalker's best game, and is the one that really gave me serious peak SquareSoft vibes at times. I still like to think about a reality where that was the OpRainfall game that really took off as opposed to Xenoblade. No shade at that series, of course, as they're very good.

I think you gotta give him more credit than that. He's also got some good storytelling chops considering he was main director for 6 of the FF games. Sure he might've been a bit more on the "putting ideas together from everyone"-side in that respect, but he does have a good sense of what's cool to put into a video game.

This is where I'm at too.

It's kind of interesting how many similarities Claire Obscur has with Lost Odyssey. Just like, a lot of melancholy, timed hits, a small core cast of mostly older adults, passive effects you learn permanently and swap around.

Take it with a grain of salt because two of the party members are The Kids. Pretty good rendering of believable and dignified Kids but still The Kids for sure.

I'm a bit late to the list. I didn't send in a list of my own, but I'm very interested in reading along

Might actually have to clear a spot on the Steam Deck for this one next time it's on sale...
Uhh, you're going to be waiting a long time on that sale, unless I have misread the thread to this point.

(Read: It's not available on Steam.)
