I Can’t Do This All on My Own - The Scrubs Revival Thread

I hadn't seen any discourse on this, so my apologies if it's been talked about elsewhere. But it's been a while since I made a thread, so I thought I'd give it a go!

I wasn't necessarily super hyped for this. Not because I didn't love Scrubs, it was one of my favorite shows back in my college days. But it felt like Disney wasn't giving this much fanfare and revivals of old sitcoms are always a dime a dozen. Or maybe I'm just not as tuned in to mass media as I used to be to see the hype and constant advertising? Plus, I remembered being burned on the much maligned Season 9 and didn't want to get my hopes up.

Then I caught the first two episodes on premiere day and immediately got into my feels. I haven't rewatched the old Scrubs in a few years, and that was long enough to let me forget what kind of show it was. Watching the revival, I really enjoyed how cleverly written the jokes were, the comedic timing, and how heartfelt the "emotional" moments were. I was even able to forgive some of the bizarre choices like how J.D. and Elliot divorced and maybe how the head of HR is a little bit too annoying, even if I understand the kind of jokes they're trying to tell in a modern setting. This feels like a revival that isn't just a cash grab, but a genuine move by the old cast and crew to just do more of what they loved to do, picking up right where they left off. Plus, the bromance between J.D. and Turk is one of my favorite things in the world, and I've enjoyed how the two actors have been doing T-Mobile ads together these past few years just for the sake of it.

All in all, the revival has me excited to watch more and it's one of the shows I'm actually taking time on premiere days to watch. Also, this show oddly made me crave playing Etrian Odyssey, because I used to play EO2 while my old Scrubs season DVDs were playing in the background.

Has anyone else given this a watch?

I’m enjoying it so far. Bit of a bummer that John C McGinley didn’t stick around past the first episode but honestly it kind of sounds like it hurts for him to talk these days so I get it. Leagues better than the (now non-canonical) med school season.

I somewhat recently watched through the entire series intending to give that a fair shake as I had bounced off it so hard when it first aired but only made it like two episodes in.

You found the scientifically perfect set of words to make me never want to watch this lol

Oof, I completely understand. I went into it not knowing anything about the plot. Once I found this out, I got a little mad. But I kept watching, and ended up enjoying it anyway (not saying you should, you do you). The stories sometimes makes it seem like they "might" get back together, but then why divorce them in the first place? Season 8 ended in the best way to give them a happily ever after (from what I remember...), and the divorce didn't need to happen to make for a good revival.

I did not know that! It's a bummer he won't be around, I read some stuff that he may be in another episode. But I suppose that first episode was a good send off. Also, I didn't know med school was non-canonical! Good to know, I don't like to call it "bad" because it seemed like an honest attempt to keep the series going, but I always stop at Season 8 on a rewatch.

I have watched the original shiw A LOT, but haven't done so for over 15 years now, I think. Don't even remember that JD and Elliot got married. Perfectly honest, couldn't care less about that, and whatever there is to it now, personally. I remember liking the show less, as it went on, even before that now non-canon season.

Anyway, good to know that it is, apparently, a good revival. I'll give it a try.

Oh don’t take my word for it, I was just commenting on how gruff he sounds these days. You are right, there are articles out there that say it was more of a conflicting projects thing and he is in “about 3 episodes” so he may pop up again.

The original sacred heart burned down at the beginning of the med school season so they are at least pretending that part didn’t happen.

Google is telling me they did apparently...? There was that whole flash forward sequence at the end of Season 8 where it showed a few bits and pieces of future lore (even though it was halfway implied that it was all JD's imagination). But there are a lot of bits and details I don't remember about the later seasons, it's also been a few years for me since my last rewatch.

But at the end of the day, it's a sitcom and these kind of shows play fast and loose with canon and character relationships. I guess it's better not to think too hard about it. And you're right, that detail doesn't matter at the end of the day. I'm enjoying the show regardless.
