Roping the scores of existing BotW fans into playing a Musou is a shrewd business move. Going so far as to say it's c*non is just merciless.

Normal enemies in a Warriors game are like the coins in Mario. They're not obstacles at all, but rather they're the guide that tells you where you need to be going.

If I remember correctly, the normal enemies did play a role in Hyrule/FE Warriors’ base mechanics, where the more manage to get inside one of yours, the more quickly its defense deteriorates. Outside of bases though yeah, they are just there to sponge up hits.

Yep, this is a good idea. I’d love to see more of the world in the earlier era, play as the champions, etc. and there’s still a sequel coming out.

It really depends on the Musou game. Yes, most are calibrated so that your average encounters are pushovers. But I've played a few where things were a fair bit more challenging during your moment-to-moment gameplay. At least, during the learning curve section of the game. The Fist of the North Star Musou game from a number of years ago springs to mind.

Hyrule Warriors is also really fantastic for when you only have a half hour to play.

I may have emailed the AoC trailer to my mom, calling it a "BOTW prequel".

I need to get around to actually playing the DLC for Breath of the Wild sometime before November...

I enjoyed the campaign of Hyrule Warriors well enough, but did not have a spare 10,000 hours to do all the extra content. I had actually been waffling over whether to re-buy it on Switch to take another crack at it, but I'll just get this instead.

This was me not two weeks ago, and I did end up getting it. So naturally, this gets announced.

You're welcome.

I want to plays as the entire cast of the Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition.

But, like, all at once - just a huge brightly colored katamari with swords and spears and half a dozen musical instruments sticking out.

Okay, before I start, I'm gonna get this this out of the way first. YES I remember the memory where Link is implied to have killed a shit ton of Enemies including a Lynel offscreen. NO that does not "fix" my concern. My concern cannot be fixed by a single shot of Link and Zelda surrounded by dead things. Do not point as that scene and go "BUT WHAT ABOUT" because I'M NOT HAVING THAT SHIT.

Okay? Okay.

*Deep Breath*

A Muso is the worst possible way to expand upon BOTW's past.

Muso's are games where you are inevitably a king shit badass who can send everyone flying effortlessly. That's not criticism or critique, that's a fucking DESCRIPTION OF THE GENRE. Musos are designed with that concept firmly in mind! You don't loses in a muso by running out of health and dying! You in Musos because the bossmonster jumped into the keep waaay on the other side of the map and turned it red before you could finish running over there. Musos are games where you start as an overpowered force of nature, and end as a level 99 godmonster.

How the fuck are they gonna apply that to a story that necessarily has to end with everybody dying?

More specifically, how the fuck are they gonna apply that to Link's story, which ends with him not dying in a glorious duel against the single avatar of all evil, but with him just getting shot and stabbed too many times while Zelda tries and fails to do the important thing until he runs out of blood and keels over.

That would never fucking happen in a Muso! As long as you got the Spin attack button, you're NEVER gonna fail in a muso!

It's just a bad fit.

All the interesting shit from the before time in BOTW are all the little annoyances and perks of Link's life that never got expounded upon. The tiny things that gave him a reason to get out of bed in the morning, until suddenly he had a very bad, very long day, and when he woke up they'd all been dead for a century.

And there's no fucking way I'd trust a game named "HYRULE WARRIORS" to cover that kind of ground with anything approaching nuance.
I mean you all SAW the plot of Hyrule Warriors, right? It was literally "WHY WON'T LINK FUCK ME I'M GONNA TAKE OVER THE WORLD UNTIL HE FUCKS ME.

How is it possible that I agree with everything Beat says but am still hype to play this? I guess in my head it's not canon but just a fun setting for a Warriors game?

For real, right? It's either going to totally throw out all the emotional weight of the story or be just the best example of ludonarrative dissonance ever.

On the other hand, it won't be the first game in the Hyrule Warriors franchise to have half the story missions do that thing where you win the battle but then in the cutscene afterwards the situation just gets worse anyway.

Musou games have shown they can represent defeat pretty well. It's not too difficult to tune the battle so that even the strongest possible warrior can't stave off the enemy onslaught on all fronts, and they can in that case set it so that the victory condition is to reach the exit. Alternatively, they can set it up so that you win, but the battle was a diversion or a trap. Both of these things happen in mainline Dynasty Warriors, even! You can play as Cao Cao at the Battle of Red Cliffs, which was a catastrophic and humiliating defeat for him.

What's more, Breath of the Wild tells us that the event most likely to be the final battle was a decisive victory for the good guys: it's the one where Zelda storms the castle in order to put Ganon in a magical headlock. There's plenty of other opportunities to win battles while losing the war, too, like Robbie and Purah conveying Link to the Shrine of Resurrection, or inventing a scenario where you're covering civilians' escape. Or, hell, have each of the Champions lead a pitched battle to gain access to their Divine Beasts - and since the player knows that backfires on them, set it up so they actually need to, and get to, use them before they get hacked.

My personal favorite was a specific Sanada Yukimura ending in the first Samurai Warriors. The moment I was made aware of this my mind instantly went to that. Except in this the in-canon odds are a lot more overwhelming.

I agree with BEAT. But I am completely down for this. Contrary to a lot of other opinions though I kinda don't care about whether it has a massive roster or not. I will be totally cool with it even if it's limited to Link, Zelda, and the champions (Linkle is definitely top first additional pick though).

That was a goofy excuse to have a bunch of unrelated Zelda characters hit baddies with Termina's moon, though. Nintendo has apparently been involved with this one's story from the beginning.

Can Nintendo tell a good story that isn't implied? Here's where we find out.

Respectfully disagree with BEAT here. Bongo here has it right about defeat in a Musou game, they're perfectly capable. And even if no game in the past had done that (which it has, quite well) it's kind of an a lack of imagination to say they're just straight up incapable of it.

What I know that Musou games are capable of, is handling a traditional, linear narrative better than BotW did. Which is honestly a pretty low bar to clear.
