This game is fanfic.

This game is the best fanfic.

I just got to Chapter 5 and I'm worried how much time I'm gonna be spending on this game lol. I haven't quite been doing every new thing that pops up, but I have been doing all the challenge fights at the very least. There's an annoying number of upgrade quests that require Lynel and Hinox trophies and I have yet to come across a satisfying challenge fight that gives both. There's 2 that do, but they're both kind of a pain to repeat over and over.

Red Silvers

Pokemon Red w/ 1 Nidoran
That sounds depressingly similar to upgrade badges in the OG Hyrule Warriors that require Ganon materials.

I can always bump it down to easy if I get fed up with it, so it's not a huge problem or anything, just that up until now I got away with not having to repeat anything to complete character upgrades.

I would imagine there's no problem just plowing through and getting what upgrades you can with the collectibles you get. Let the completionist urge take over after you've cleared all the content if you like, then you're not doubling up any more than you need to.

So I found a google doc (from the AoC Reddit) with weapon information.

Weapons google doc

Some quick facts:

Hidden Seals are locked to individual weapon types and are not random. Eg. the Tree Branch, Soldier’s Sword, etc. all have their own unique Hidden Seals at level 25 and 30.

Stacked seals only apply for the first four. Hidden Seals don’t stack with others for a greater effect.

Thank god there’s no gacha bullshit in here.

This should help people who are wondering how to fuse stuff!

I think I'm starting to get the hang of Daruk. I don't mean the nuances of doing sick jumps off of magma ramps. Rather, it's this: I don't think there's a single attack in the whole game that can even make you flinch if you block it with Daruk's Protection, and most enemies expose their weak point gauges for a little bit after their attacks even if you don't dodge at all.

My fingers...hurt.

I wish there was a chart for Zelda's combo so I can time it just right to always get bomb bowling.

I know this is really more my own fault than anything, but right now that my roster has reached the point where they don't all make it on screen during a loading sequence, I'm lamenting that unlike the Adventure mode of HW1, this game rarely forces you to use any particular fighters (except occasionally taking one or more away). In HW1 that was kind of a problem because you had to level everyone and build good weapons for everyone and there were roughly 600 of them. But it was a good thing too, because you had to get effective at everyone and there were only a few that really were chores to play as.

Here, my own laziness takes over and I have just been using Link pretty much all the time. He's the highest leveled, he has the best fused weapon I have built, and his moveset means I can hit weak point triggers easily for most monsters. I mean, weak, strong, up in the air, weak, weak, weak, arrow volley will stagger anything with a head weakpoint and almost always end up with a dead moblin. It's very empowering, but at the same time I'm missing out on a bunch of other fighters that I've not used since their training missions.

I hope there are Adventure-mode boards worth of DLC in the end I guess.

Serious suggestion: are you playing on Hard? Link is still my strongest/most consistent fighter even on Hard, but it might bump up your challenge just enough and be more satisfying for you. Doesn't really address the whole not being forced to use characters aspect though.

Imps is the best I've found. Each of her shadow clones charge up her Special bar, so one small crowd and her special goes from zero to hundred percent in a snap. So many explosive barrels being stacked...

I like Impa enough, but I struggle with grasping the mechanics of her absorbing symbols and keeping them stocked in the heat of battle. Sometimes it seems like I lay and absorb a symbol without ever touching ZR or pressing X outside a combo? Maybe I just need to spend some time with her toying about in the Meditative Realm or whatever that's called. Still, she's usually my second pick after Link so far.

You can absorb a painted symbol just by hitting the enemy with any of her strong attacks afterwards.

I find it most efficient to mark three common enemies and then use combo 4, YYYX. You don't even have to aim it, it just teleports the enemies in front of you and hits all three for a full charge. Impa's really good.

You know who else is good? Daruk. I mentioned this before, but I want to say more. Blocking wasn't really worth it in Hyrule Warriors 1, but heavy characters in Age of Calamity can make excellent use of it. For a normal character, blocking will negate non-elemental damage from most attacks, but a heavy attack will break the shield, putting you into a briefly vulnerable stagger state before you can act again. In general, characters whose dodge rolls are worse (bigger hitbox, longer recovery, etc.) can take more punishment on their shields, and the strategy of blocking an attack and punishing is a safer alternative to trying for a perfect dodge and a flurry rush. Less reward, but less risk. Link (with one-handed weapons) and Urbosa can also do a parry while shielding, though I haven't quite worked out the nuances of it.

Daruk takes it to a whole other level, though. See, when he guards, he uses his signature power, Daruk's Protection. As far as I have seen (it's possible that the final boss might make me eat these words, but I'm not there yet), Daruk's Protection makes him completely invulnerable to every attack in the game, and nothing can break his guard. He can just sit there tanking all day. The only thing he fears is missions with a strict time limit, because he's not getting any flurry rushes if he uses this strategy.

I'm finding that on Hard, even if you're right at the recommended level, challenges that consist entirely of one or two officer fights simply require you to get as many weak point smashes as you possibly can, and you have to break those weak point gauges more often than the enemy will expose them. When I was unlocking Maz Koshia (the second optional character), for instance, I pretty much had to use up all of my magic wands and I still finished with just a few seconds left on the clock.

See that's why I keep rolling back to Link... besides having a weapon for him with a +15% perfect dodge window, is as I mentioned before he can pretty much attack many enemies' weak point gauges at will, and if you do enough hits in succession to (such as two air attacks followed by an arrow volley), you stagger them to show the weak point gauge more. He's just too freakin' efficient a killing machine.

I have discovered that Yunobo can also stagger a lot of enemies at-will and force out their weak point gauge.

Still in Chapter 4 and I just unlocked The Great Fairies . I took them to the practice chamber and I still don't understand how they work. Well, I get the basic idea, but the execution is wild.

I've unlocked the batch of characters you get in chapter 5. I really love playing as Yunobo, can't get the hang of Riju, got a very favorable first impression of Teba, and have no strong opinions about Sidon. But man, the sidequests seem to go through a real difficulty spike around this time, huh? Playing on Hard (not even Very Hard), I think I've got no choice but to use as much cheese as I can manage to clear the level III elemental training missions. Anybody know a good level to restock on apples at?

Just cos you don’t like fanfic doesn’t mean the writers are cowards.
THEY ARE COWARDS BECAUSE THEY ARE UNWILLING TO CONFRONT THE CORE THEME OF THE PREMISES THE GAME WAS SOLD ON, IN FAVOR OF AN "ACTUALLY EVERYTHING IS FINE" FIX.

IT AIN'T COWARDLY BECAUSE IT'S FANFIC.

IT'S COWARDLY BECAUSE OF THE COWARDICE.

Hell I'd say that OG Hyrule warriors was a BRAVE fanfic. Yeah it's objectively terrible, but it fucking WENT FOR IT, totally unafraid to let it's weird horny freak flag fly.

This game is cowardly.

This game goes for it too. It's just that what it's going for is different.

Although the premise of the story seems at first to be that time travel undoes the trauma of the original game, it still hits a lot of the same beats anyway - because, after all, if they didn't, they wouldn't be the same characters. In practice the time travel serves the same purpose as Hyrule Warriors 1, allowing characters who never interacted to meet.

But viewed from another axis, it serves as a first for the series and one that audiences have been insistent on sometimes to the exclusion of all other concerns: this is a game where the title character, Zelda, is the main character. The story is about her growth and her insecurity. Cutscenes follow her perspective. It's not telling her story through Link's memories - Link's just sort of the fifth Champion, one more in the parade of people around her who aren't visibly struggling with their destiny.

I'm not sure if I'd characterize that as courage, exactly. Conforming to the backstory of Breath of the Wild would leave half the cast's stories unresolved. The "cowardly" decision to indulge in impossible but longed-for character beats like Sidon and Mipha reuniting by making all of the characters part of the story, rather than extra-canonical add-ons like in HW1, is less cowardice and more just plain obvious given everything else they had already written around it.

More importantly (seriously do not read this unless you’re past chapter five) there’s a level where Sidon simps for Link so hard he sets up a fight with Revali and him to prove that Link is great. Moreover, when you beat Sidon he goes “your dominance is amazing Link” and you get rewarded with the gimp rubber chest piece.

TELL ME AGAIN THEY ARE COWARDS @BEAT

COME ON THEN.

Like did you seriously think I'd forgive them not ending on a Grim total party kill because they gave hand-wrapped gifts to the shippers?

I'm fucking allergic to shipping come on you all know this.
