I was not anticipating Reverse Terminator, from the story.

but here we are.

It effectively means that the game is no longer canon with the storyline of botw.

Which means it might be easier for people to enjoy, as well as they can add goofy bits without the pressure to maintain gravitas over a tragedy.

Roping the scores of existing BotW fans into playing a Musou is a shrewd business move. Going so far as to say it's c*non is just merciless.

And then, of course, it's not actually. Brilliant.

I really really love this demo. My biggest complaint about Hyrule Warriors (a game I love) is that the items felt super perfunctory and were a pain to use. The runes are a great improvement and I love that each character uses them differently.

I’m curious about how much stuff will be in this. I doubt it’s going to be on par with where the first was by the third release, which is kind of a bummer, but also I’m not really going to complain about being unable to spend dozens and dozens of hours on it. A win/win really

If this is your first time playing a game like this, here is the most useful piece of advice I can give you: If you miss what somebody says in the chaos of battle, pause the game and open up the Battle Log.

Demo feels really good. I want to play more. It feels less like an evolution of Hyrule Warriors 1 and more like its own thing. The difference between running attacks and standing attacks kinda trips me up and suggests that I'm trying to play too hastily. Despite being more complex than its predecessor with stuff like unique moves, runes, magic wands, and such, the UI for it makes it feel like the most manageable Musou game I've played, and I guess I attribute that to the Nintendo juice mixed in during its development.

Calling it right now:

Halfway through the game, mini-guardian travels forward in time to help Zelda, Link and the future Champions continue the fight against new mystery villain, possibly segueing into the events of BOTW 2.

Finished the demo...much beefier than I expected it to be! And I LOVE Impa and Zelda's movesets. Link is also distinct from his HW appearances, which is nice, but he's still sword dude so it's not as exciting as ninja summoner or Sheikah Slate glitchfest, lol. Looking forward to the full game!

Zelda looks incredibly fun to play. I cannot wait to mow down armies with my smartphone of doom.
She is incredibly fun to play. I’m delighted that they give you a weird moveset this early in the game.

Also, I notice that Link and Zelda’s extra combos are tied to their weapons, whereas Impa’s combos are just tied to Impa. So Link and Zelda almost certainly have other weapons, which are basically completely different characters in HW with how different they play.

I did not realize the demo doesn't actually let you do any of the Chapter 2 story fights. What a tease!

Wondering how many koroks are in this game and what the korok seeds will do for you.

Something that jumped out at me was the first combo attack for Link's 1h sword - a leap and plunge, like in Hyrule Warriors - is the easiest way to bring up the glider prompt. So by doing something you bring with you from HW you get introduced to a new mechanic.

That seems to be really deeply implied by the conceit of literally the first cutscene. Whether this is, like, "the point" or simply an "escape hatch" so Breath of the Wild proper 1 or 2 doesn't have to conform to what is "canon" in Warriors will shake out when we see the game proper.

And I LOVE Impa and Zelda's movesets... Sheikah Slate glitchfest
It’s really great, and it’s a fantastic yet subtle way that the game’s form helps inform its characters. Having Zelda mess around and just kinda hack the Sheikah Slate into doing batshit stuff is perfectly in character for her and tells us a lot about her personality and capabilities as a person.

What then goes unsaid in all of this, is that Link must have the personality/imagination of a soggy towel if all he can manage the Sheikah Slate to do is the stuff we see in BotW.

Ha, I love the idea that Link was just kind of a tool, it wasn't that the resurrection shrine wiped his personality.

I played this last night, and it was a lot of fun. I still have no handle on the combos and dodge/parry timing (didn't help that I was playing with a setup that gave me a lot of extra input lag) but I'm really enamored with it. I enjoyed BotW, but I spent the entire game thinking to myself, "I wish I was playing the game that we see short snippets of in those flashbacks instead of this one." And now my wish has come true! It's nice to have a Zelda game with a little bit more of a meaty narrative.

Ha, I love the idea that Link was just kind of a tool, it wasn't that the resurrection shrine wiped his personality.
Haha, I don't know if I would call him a tool, he definitely demonstrates a modicum of emotional intelligence. But he's definitely got the type of personality that when given a hammer, he sees everything as a nail. Guy just solves all his problems by smacking it with a sword. I still consider this the definitive text for explaining BotW Link's personality:

Listen I have nothing but respect for a character that sees the Sheikah slate and makes it go bonk on his enemies.

Breath of the Wild made a big deal via the flashbacks about how the slate "chose" Link. The implication was that he was destined to be the hero, and the player just understands "this is Link, of course it would choose Link". Given what is being discussed here and in the demo, I am now receptive to the theory that the slate chose Link because he was the one champion that wasn't going to break it within about five seconds of use. The Sheikah Slate is sentient, and it wants to stay that way for a long time. Goggle Robbie is not even an option.

I mean it was always supposed to respond to him cos the Shrines etc were designed for the Hero of Legend. And, it only did turn on properly when Impa yeeted it across the goddamned map and it landed in Link’s lap. Of course Baby Guardian then haxored the proverbial Gibson and now everyone can.

It’s especially amusing because when news about the Sheikah Slate being involved I joked to my cousin Val that they just huck it across the map.

I was tooling around with the demo a bit more after I learned the level cap was 20, Gaer was watching;

Together we found a total of FIVE FUCKING KOROK SEEDS in the Battle for Hyrule Field

More interestingly, after initially writing off the 'A Feast of Greens' quest as not completable in the demo I started finding Mighty Thistle and Armoranth as random drops when cutting grass (annoying because Zelda's combo doesn't actually cut grass) so there's probably a source for Bladed Rhino Beetles as those are the three mats I didn't get as completion rewards doing demo stuff

On the "Road to the Ancient Lab" map, we found four Koroks thus far.

More seriously, where we found Koroks:

  • Pinwheel
  • Stump with leaf insignia
  • Balloon
  • "Korok" Flowers
  • CRATES

The answer is: break e v e r y t h i n g

Found Bladed Rhino Beetles in a chest in the second map (Road to the Ancient Tech Lab) but only NINE

edit: It was one of the chests inside little enemy camps - the one right by the start of the mission in the skull-rock - not a wooden chest that minibosses drop

edit again: It's only 5 beetles needed for the South Akkala Stable I dunno why I thought it was 10; nine beetles is plenty

In addition we found an additional two koroks in the first map for a total of seven and two more in the second map, for a total of six.

It's coming.

I'm afraid.
