Also: I finally tried to switch it up and fought a tough boss using the Reaper Crestand I'm kinda sold now on using that one as my main from now on. I like how chonky it is, which helps both with combat and platforming -- the pogo-ing with it so luxurious!
Meanwhile, every time I try that one, I immediately wish I hadn't. Seems to be a pretty polarizing option!

This is the “Hollow Knight but starring Hornet” experience that I was hoping for. I really enjoy the way she vaults up ledges. Keeps the momentum going! The diagonal dive attack is taking some time to get used to, though.

I wish some of the more divisive elements from the first game didn’t carry over. Losing money upon death and everything involved with mapping are the big ones for me. Money being a separate and scarcer resource makes those systems sting even more this time!

Yeah, rosaries are relatively scarce and yet they're required for a lot of stuff! Like unlocking maps, unlocking fast travel points, sometimes even unlocking benches! And despite being droppable resources, you often find "loose" rosaries as environmental/exploration rewards - even Dark Souls wasn't so harsh, rewarding you with the non-losable soul items that Silksong has but seems pretty reluctant to hand out.

I'm enjoying it, overall; the vibes are immaculate and the platforming and movement is smooth and fun. But I'm honestly not sure I'll be able to finish it in the long-run. I finished HK! I can do this too! But sometimes I just need to take a break after yet another death to some rando in an area I still haven't found the map for and I keep hearing how it only gets harder later on.

There are few places in the game that will allow you to cash in rosaries beads to create the actual rosaries, which are inventory items you can carry around and then use when you need the beads. You do lose some of them in the process - I think it costs 80, and you get a 60-count string - but it's better than losing all of your beads and not being able to get them back for one reason or another.

Rosaries are a bit annoyingly scarce for how they can be lost (I lost over a hundred last night), but they can be farmed pretty easily in some areas so at this stage I don't have a huge problem with it. That 25% loss for stringing them up is pretty rough, but I could see doing it with large amounts.

I wish the rewards for exploring were more substantial (at least in the first half of the game -- I can't speak to the second half yet). I've spent a lot of time exploring off the beaten path, and thus far, I have exactly one additional health mask to show for it. This is made even worse because most bosses deal two masks of damage per hit, so this doesn't even let me take one additional hit.

I'm right near the end (I assume) of the first half of the game, and I'm feeling the opposite: once I gained the Wall Cling and the Needolin, I could back track to a lot of places and found a nice assortment of upgrades and new relics.

Rosary issues
I'm not trying to brag here, but right now I'm sitting at like 800 rosaries with very little to spend them on.

Hmm. I'm definitely finding myself a bit short to get most of the stuff at Bone Bottom. (Just encountered Fourth Chorus running back from getting my new cloak, and lost about a hundred beads somewhere in getting the spike cores.) But not sure how many merchants there are. I've been able to activate benches whenever.

There are a few merchants. If you are asking if tools respawn, nah. Those are one and done. But if you want to get everything, prepare to farm. I'm at a place in Act 2 where just one item is 800+ beads.

I might have missed what to use the Needolin on. I tried it on one of the stone tablets that talks about a song and I didn't notice it doing anything, so I ignored it after. I've found a few things with the Wall Cling, but nothing much that seemed useful.

I remember YouTuber Nerrel’s fairly infamous review of Hollow Knight, wherein he criticized that there was a dearth of meaning exploration rewards compared to Metroid games. Finding a fairly in-depth secret area, only for it to lead to vendor trash was a common disappointment in HK, and it’s already happened several times in my couple hours of Silksong. At least this time money is way more important, especially early on when you have to buy all the map accessories.

A few hours into the game, there are a few expensive items but I haven't had a reason to buy them yet. Everything I actually think I need has been pretty affordable.

Got to an enemy room/arena tonight that is hands down the most difficult thing I've faced in the game, and it isn't even close. Had to quit after a solid hour of attempts. If I hadn't already spent 20 hours on the game, I'd just call it here. (Yes, I'm aware of sunk-cost fallacy.) I'm not sure what to do. Farm for beads so I can buy some more tools to try out is the only thing I can thing of, or go try to complete some quests.

Based on your post before this one, I'm pretty sure I know where you're talking about because I also got there last night. Is it at the end of the High Halls? I didn't put an hour into it -- just two or three attempts -- but I also left to go explore a new area, because yikes. I used up all my shell shards throwing out tools in what I sure as hell hope is the final wave, so I'm hoping that further exploration will help me refill.

Sounds like a patch is incoming next week that's going to adjust at least early-game economy and difficulty a bit.

It's been a while since I've played a Soulsvania-style game in any form, so I'm refamiliarizing myself with the cycle of loving the atmosphere and exploration, hating the experience of running back through the same terrain 50 times to bash my head against the same fucking boss, then feeling absolutely powerful and triumphant when I defeat said boss. It's a good time so far.

That's the area. And if you think the waves are over after the 'boss bug', get ready for more. I don't know how far I got. Maybe wave 8 or so before I died.

I got to the wave with two of the big bugs, and if that's not the end I don't know what is.

Meanwhile, tonight I beat a genuinely satisfying boss fight, finally got the double jump, and filled in the map for what might actually be the worst area in any video game I've played in recent memory: Bilewater. I'm normally inclined to give devs the benefit of the doubt, but holy shit, this place genuinely feels like they didn't playtest it at all. It just feels cruel. Apparently it's optional, which would've been nice to know before I lost 300-400 rosaries there (something that's never happened before). The good news is, I never have to go back! I'm sure the boss of the area will be thrilled to know they get to live.

I didn't even bother attempting the fight tonight. Just left and went exploring and found Mount Fay and Memorium. Now I'm wondering exactly how big the game is.

Now that I have double jump there's all kinds of places I need to go revisit. "Interesting" thing about the double jump is that my muscle memory is thrown off now since I used float a lot.

Are we the same person? This was also my exact reaction. (Though I was getting more used to it by the end of my session yesterday, and I'm sure it'll be even easier today.)

There are metal doors that have, like, a shell design on them, and if you play the Needolin in front of them, they open up. I think I've only found 3 of them so far, and 1 of them I wasn't able to reach yet.

Has everyone been checking for breakable walls? This game has some excellent and numerous breakable walls, and I feel like I'm pretty good at spotting them now. I'm pretty deep into The Cathedral now and I'm having a great time.

Yeah, I've found a bunch of walls. They often give off a puff of dust into the black area behind them if they're breakable, I've noticed.

Finally got a second needle upgrade, hell yeah. Also found a new crest, Crest of the Architect, which also seems pretty sick. Excited to get back to bug times tomorrow.

I'm at what I assume is the guardian boss for the Citadel (the Last Judge). Is there seriously no quicker, less treacherous way to get back to the boss arena? This is some Shadows of Yharnam-level cruelty.

I've read defenses of this design philosophy over the years, that it adds consequences to death yadda yadda, but as far as I'm concerned all it equates to is wasting my time.

You can zip through that boss run pretty fast and safely if you ignore the enemies and keep moving. The second driznit can be a bit of a hassle if you delay but if you quickly pogo the bell after dashing over the judge it won't have an opportunity to get in your way.

I've figured out a reasonably quick way through, but I still hate this design tradition so much. And I fully recognize that this is a case of "You want it to be one way, but it's the other way."

I must be a sicko for runbacks because I am having a blast with them in this game. It helps a lot that you do get really good movement tech by the mid-game and so it just feels good to me to run through the place jumping and pogoing.
