There is a lot of talk about Donkey Kong Bananza in the Nintendo thread, so I think it should have its own place for discussion.

I think it looks like a good game that will consume my life for at least a month when it is released.

Discuss.

I don’t own or plan to own a Switch 2, but I watched the direct anyway and it looks great.

I am very, very excited for this game. The reveal stream is more or less what sold me on the Switch 2, and yesterday's Direct only made it look even better.

However (cross-posted from the Nintendo thread because I didn't see this one before I wrote it):

One thing that actually bugs me is how -- from the footage we saw yesterday -- it seems like only Pauline has voice acting, and everyone else with dialogue is stuck with just text and the occasional non-word vocalization. Why would you only do this for one character? That's a super weird production choice.

I don't know. Everyone else is monkeys, and monkeys don't talk?

("What about the last 30 years of DK voice acting in cartoons and the movie, Jeb?" Ssssh. SSSSSSHHH.)

Anyway, I'm very excited for Donkey Kong Odyssey: Tears of the Kongdom (shamelessly stolen from Reddit)

It feels weird to me that, as much as people have tried speculating about the nonsensical "timeline" here, I don't think I've seen anybody suggest that Cranky Kong is a different character in this.

Watching the Direct elevated Bananza from "looks pretty cool I guess" to a "must play" situation for me.

Some irrational part of me wishes they'd managed to keep the Pauline reveal under wraps until release, as I think it would have made for an amazing moment. But I guess it'd be pretty hard to show off very much of the game if they did so, and that was what sold me on it, so...

The fact that Pauline was able to be leaked prior to this Direct in the first place is an indication that revealing her was always meant to be part of the marketing strategy.

Can we get those leakers to leak any indication that Drag x Drive will have any rizz whatsoever?

I was joking yesterday about the sliding Cranky Kong timeline.

I've seen some joking speculation that Cranky, Donkey, and Junior are the "lifecycle" of a Kong and that this "Cranky" is an ancestor of "our" Cranky, who is in his original DK form as the star of this game.

And now my head hurts

Every time I hear about the dreaded Zelda timeline my eyes roll back in my head. Thinking about a DK timeline threatens to make them just roll out of my head entirely.

This looks fantastic, perhaps moreso since I just finished Super Mario Odyssey for the first time, amazing game, and I got platformin' on my mind. DK Bananza was part of my Switch 2 pre-order bundle and I could cancel it if I wanted to but I guess I'll keep it now. I guess.

I wonder if I should give modern DKC a go just to get further in the mood. I am an opponent, a downright detractor, of the SNES DKC games but I watched a partial playthrough of Tropical Freeze and now I'm like, "Hmmmmm. Maybe."

Tropical Freeze is one of the best platformers ever made.

Except basically every other character in the Direct was shown to be talking in full text boxes? It's just such a weird choice to give one character an actual voice that I am genuinely interested in knowing how they arrived there.

Unfortunate doesn't begin to describe...

Yeah, I think that could explain it. The game's plot seems to revolve around reaching the planet's core in order to have a wish granted, so maybe the wish is Pauline turning back into an adult?

I assume that, somehow, this game is a "prequel" to the timeline as we know it. Thus...

My serious answer is I am expecting there to be some kind of monkey's (ha!) paw situation, where Pauline gets to wish to become a starlet (that eventually grows up to be the Pauline we see in Odyssey), but the trade-off is that Donkey has to wish that they (or just Pauline) forget that they ever had this adventure together. Thus we get to a Donkey Kong '81 (and a few minis games) where Pauline and Mario think DK is a villain, but he's just kind of confused about his relationship with his old friend.

My fervent hope answer is that Pauline wishes to become a starlet, and Donkey Kong is just like, screw it, I wish my family was immortal and ageless. So Cranky, Donkey, and all the rest never age from that moment on, and the rest of the Mario cast, including Pauline, ages normally. Donkey Kong will watch you turn to dust and laugh, Mario!

No, I am not spoilering my wild conjecture. I'm usually wrong about these things.

I got to play this tonight. I went to Walmart - I don't know why, listen, we all make mistakes - and they had a Switch 2 kiosk in Electronics with a demo for this and Mario Kart. I spent about 10 minutes with the game, skipping the cut scenes.

It's fun! Perhaps a little odd because of how much time you spend "inside" of structures while you are punching through them but that could just be the first area, and I was getting used to it by the end of the demo. I had Pauline with me (not Odd Rock) and the super saiyan gorilla powers were available, so I'm not sure if that's how the actual game plays out or if they just included those in the demo build. There were secrets that required Pauline's singing and certain surfaces that only the bananza power could get through, and I don't believe the actual level was edited, so either the Pauline/Super Monkey thing happens early or areas will need to be revisited; the latter would not surprise me since more than ever I'm conviced the SM Odyssey team is behind this. The music also had a kind of Odyssey feel to it (and it was pretty great.)

I can see myself remapping the buttons and that was the only weirdness I was still struggling with by the end of the demo. The Y button is punch but the jump button is A, with the B button used for ground pound/punch down. I kept trying to hit B to jump. I guess I was expecting the ground pound to be the punch button + something else (e.g. hold ZL and then punch) but, no, that's not how it works. Considering how often you must jump (to use the dive punch) if just kinda feels weird for jump to be on A. Maybe there's other areas where you don't dive punch as often, or you use more up punches (X), so I guess it makes sense. Still gonna remap them, I think.

Ooh, didn't know there was a demo out there for it.

Shame they're apparently not putting it on the eShop ahead of release. XP

I want this some kind of fierce. I think it's going to be amazing. I was a bit indifferent in the early reveals, but that last big presentation completely sold me on it.

Also, indeed, good to have confirmation that it's the Odyssey team.

This has such 90s-ass Nintendo vibes I'm surprised there wasn't a Play It Loud graphic at the end.

I don't know that I'd call Super Mario Odyssey a secret Sonic game (though I did spend a ton of time rolling around like it was) but this is, in all ways except branding, *definitely* a Knuckles game

I saw someone call this game “Red Faction: Gorilla” and had a good chuckle.

My copy came in earlier this afternoon but imma try to “beat” Rune Factory first before moving on.

Kazin

did i do all of that?
