Hades is out now, holy heck

I like the shield a whole lot. I need to be way more careful when using it's rush attack in lava land, however.

Is there any way to increase your starting HP?

There's a mirror talent with 10 ranks that can increase your max hp by up to 50, and there's a keepsake which can do the same.

Definitely recommend the alternate one that lets you get health back with Darkness. Eventually 3 HP every door ends up amounting to nothing, and if you find a Darkness drop you're often back to full health. Some of the alternates on ones you don't have unlocked are good but...well, you'll get there

3 HP per door heals a lot in Styx, where it matters more and you won’t be getting darkness, IMHO. Fountain at the end of each area covers most of the rest.

The Darkness-heal one is especially good when you're working toward your first clear, and that translates into a big heal after each boss.

I ended up switching back to 3/room later, once I was doing heat clears with bounties instead of darkness from bosses, but in those early runs it can be a lifesaver.

Also, getting enough Darkness to have all 3 Death Defies should be a high priority.

I think that in the narrative sense, once you get the epilogue and bang everyone you can it's pretty much done? It doesn't really ever end from what I can tell.

Shit, I haven't been raising Olympian affinity at all. Guess I have a thing to work towards now!

Do you require aid.

I use vanilla Zagreus fists and stack dodge bonuses and it has yet to steer me wrong.

That's the one new upgrade that piqued my interest. I will try that out next time I boot up the game.

Highly recommend Ruthless Reflex. It's a huge damage boost. Fiery Presence is also quite good for taking out weak enemies, especially for weapons/abilities with high base damage.

I tried the bow again, and lucked into some choice boons that increased my attack, allowed rapid fire at the cost of charge shot, topped with even more rapid fire. I got all the way to the boss of the third area, who tanked my shots like they were nothing and ended my blessed run in shame. A few rooms prior, I was a mere four gold short of replenishing my Death Defied bank. It was truly hell, despite happening in Elysium.

Before I quit, I unlocked some more mirror goodies. They involve Casting, which I always forget about. One marks an enemy and increases the damage I do while it has the cast jewel-thing, which sounds good on text in a menu.

I wonder how much modding there will be of this game. Supergiant uses it's own internal engine, and it seems to have a fair number of quirks (prerendered 3d is a 2d engine, for instance). I have to imagine it's not super accessible to mod, although I suppose life finds a way.

Didn't they specifically do an engine rebuilt to native C from XNLA C# for Hades?

That said things like swapping assets are the kind of thing PC modders are pretty good at.

Have any of their previous games been moddable, or did they have many mods made even if so?

Absolutely. I don't think it's too controversial to call Hades their best game yet, but Bastion and Transistor are absolutely worth playing. (So is Pyre, though that's only on PC and PS4 right now.)

Bastion is the more similar of the two, with Transistor having a hybrid Turn Based combat system (which can be ignored, if that’s not your thing). But Transistor is more polished and has more difficulty options.

Yeah, that is a good point. As far as I'm aware though, there wasn't any attention paid in that rebuild to make the engine any more mod friendly.

Not that I'm aware of. Looking through the SG Discord, I don't see anything regarding mods.

Every Supergiant Game is perfect

I said it before and I'll say it again, the main reason Hades is not a very strong lock for Game of the Decade for me is SuperGiant is on pace to put out 2-3 more games before it's over.
I've never played Bastion or Transistor, but I'm a sucker for well-crafted mythological narratives and the trailer seemed to hit the right spots. What can I expect if I've never played those isometric... RPGs? Action RPGs? Dungeon crawlers?

Isometric Action Rogeulite (with very light RPG mechanics, ability management rather than leveling) with fairly fast combat heavily pushing reactive dodging. Best in genera weapon/ability selection where everything feels good to use and has clear strengths and weaknesses with lots of small systems let you customize your play-style to what you like beyond that. Excellent writing, fantastic music and voice acting, great art direction, and an enjoyable cast.

Structurally the game's heavily built on death and repetition at every level, the rogue-lite elements aren't just tacked on and fit perfectly with the gameplay, themes and story. Strong emphasis on meta-progress between runs as well as an optional difficulty enhancement system and an easy mode if you want it.

You're describing Hades, not Bastion/Transistor.

Bastion is to Hades as Secret of Mana is to Rogue, or something like that. The combat in Bastion is not dissimilar to Hades, but the game is linear for the most part.

Please never combine Bastion to Secret of Mana.

like, seriouslly, I ignored the game foe like 3 years becaue people kept saying that and I’m still annoyed by it. Find **any other** Action RPG.

They've really cornered the market in dropping one unassailably good game every three years like clockwork

It's really astounding. And it's so heartwarming that they all seem like cool people who genuinely enjoy working together and still have all the original team members there.

Yes, but no one else is so singularly focused on disliking Secret of Mana.
