Yup, like Kalir said those aren't primary slot boons, they're hammer upgrades, which only care about what aspect you have insofar as what you're offered. There's some special hammers that only show up when you're using certain aspects as well, the most notable in my mind are the suite of hammers that only show up when for the hidden Rail aspect.

Got it. It just read weird for anyone new who might not have realized that boons will tell you when they replace a different boon.

Anyways, punching things in this game is pretty fun.

I got my first win on run seventeen and, after a few losses within my first ten clears and a three-run losing streak following my tenth, I'm currently on a sixteen-run streak while climbing the Heat ladder. I want to say that a lot of that is due to my increased skill and familiarity with the game, but it also cannot be denied that I have made a lot of gains on my Mirror of Night upgrades and weapon Aspects to offset the difficulty increases from Heat.

After my whinging earlier I cleared the game on my first try of the night. Wasn't even in doubt really. Blocking is a super useful thing the shield can do.

I want to see more of the story but I probably will slow down how much I'm playing it.

EXTREME MEASURES 4 DOWN

NEVER

FUCKING

AGAIN

I was at those 48 hit points you see on the last life for HALF OF THE FINAL PHASE. I was absolutely convinced I was going to die, but somehow managed to dig as deep as possible and pull it out. I think I nearly passed out when I won cause I was holding my breath or something.

And if you'd like to know some spoilers about Extreme Measures 4, THERE ARE THREE PHASES, and he has a move where he can absorb any of the green trap jars that are on the field to FUCKING HEAL HIMSELF, AND HE CAN DO THIS MULTIPLE TIMES!

I've had a few phases in this game. The first was slow but steady progress. The second was consistently reaching Elysium but struggling there.

That's where I got last night. I've beat the Bone Hydra 3 times now after dying on it quite a few times in a row.

Those gold cursors are just pins that you can set up to five boons to be displayed during or after a run. On the victory screen, you can unpin the ones automatically selected by the game and then re-pin whatever you'd like to show off a particular synergy you found useful, interesting, or amusing.

Okay, sick of this again. Decided to always choose boons as opposed to Centaur Hearts one run because maybe I had been playing too defensively and it did work once. Next run, no, died to Maybe a Spoiler, I Dunno again. Died this, the next, time, too, but I was going after Centaur Hearts because I had a boon that made them give more health. I did have a lot of health but yes, damage bad, like my playing. Had to pause during the final fight because thumb tendon, ow. Might see the credits 55 runs from now.

This is exactly the right sort of game to get sick of for a while and then return to later, Skimbleshanks.

Came within a third of a life bar of beating Theseus. Closer, closerrrrrr

Got my 3rd win in 60 total runs last night, FINALLY with the fists 2nd Aspect. Turned on God Mode after my first win and haven't looked back. Still has it's hooks in me and seeing how the Pacts change bossfights has been a lot of fun (Haven't turned it on to Theseus yet because I'm scared)

Well, I made it to the end of Elysium... Did not do well against the boss.

What has been working for me is finding a boon that works for me and leveling it up as much as i can to try and boost damage and kill things faster.
As an example, I got the hammer upgrade to the bow that slows it down, but does extra damage, plus crit on attacks and extra crit damage from Artemis.

So here's the thing, each successive level up for a boon does less and less, it basically caps out at like level 3, anything more isn't worth the pom, unless your other two options really are just absolutely terrible. Poms are in general my lowest priority picks, even a gold room is more appealing, because a gold room is 2/3s of a boon from the shop, and you Always Want More Boons. Each one you get gives you more options if not firepower, and they unlock higher tiers of stuff you can get, up to the Legendary and Duo boons that can alter your runs in very powerful ways. You'll never see the Legendaries and Duos without having the right prerequisite boons, which is a big part of why I say More Boons.

My current keepsake management strategy is to use the different god keepsakes to force them into my runs in order to capitalize on the Duos that I know work for me in the selection of gods I prefer using, as well as making sure for example I always have Divine Dash before Elysium. Meanwhile I haven't taken a Legendary in quite some time, mainly because I don't spec in the directions that unlock them, and I turned down poor Aphrodite's Legendary twice in my EM4 clear because it just wasn't going to do anything for me that I needed.

I have been taking Hermes's keepsake early on to level it up and then switching to the Lucky Tooth for Elysium but still, I keep dying

Yeah that's exactly where I am. Right now I'm mainly focusing on practicing while collecting enough darkness to unlock my third Death Defiance.

Honestly if I draw boons I don't like these days I just concentrate on gems and darkness for that run and hope for better stuff next time.

I thought stubborn defiance would be useful until I started consistently making it to the final boss without dying more than once before that.

I find it depends on which one I pick. If I take stubborn defiance I don't die at all on the way. If I take death defiance I die a couple times.

Note that you lose the dodge stacks granted by hermes keepsake if you switch it out, which can feel devastating if you were growing used to to them (the same is true of the butterfly). This is fine if your just leveling it, but not ideal if you were counting on the dodge to help out in the later zones.

Tips for Elysium:
The "meow" chariots will explode on their own. Keep away from them; you'll almost always take damage if you attempt to kill them directly.

Splitters are very easily killed if you have a way to deflect their shots.

Against the giant butterfly ball, you're usually best served killing off the little guys as they appear. Zagreus will strongly suggest focusing your attacks on the miniboss, but it's not the real threat.

Brightshields are the biggest jerks in the game. Anything "piercing" will damage them through their shields, or you can attack them from behind or wait until they attack. It's often a good idea to save them for last so you aren't attempting to do this in a crowd of other enemies.

Elite archers shoot three times in a row, regular archers only once. Pay attention to whether your chamber has elite archers so you don't get tagged unnecessarily.

Brightspears have surprising range, and they can leap to close the gap. If they aren't armored, try stunlocking them.

Sad soldier man is the helper for Elysium. If you've lost one or more DD, that's usually the obvious take here. If you're good on DD but low on health, the healing will usually get you back to decent shape before the boss. The attack boost is only worthwhile if your build actually uses attacks. If the attack bonus isn't especially worthwhile and you don't need healing, skip sad soldier man.

Theseus will use a god call when he reaches 50% health. You don't want to deal with this while Asterius is still up. Focus the Minotaur first.

The Minotaur uses a very telegraphed attack pattern: most commonly, he swings twice, usually followed by a leap. He's vulnerable after this combo. Less often, he'll charge you. You can't outrun this in most cases, so you want to lead him to run into a wall or pillar. You usually make this happen by dashing through him as he gets close to you.

Once Theseus reaches his call phase, it's a good idea to let loose a cthonic companion and/or greater call. Theseus is completely vulnerable until the initial call finishes, and a very good run can kill him in that time. More often, you'll have to finish him off while contending with his attacks and the call. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the call's attack pattern. You don't want to be caught out by it, and Theseus's attacks aren't hard to dodge in the meantime.

You do have his shield to contend with, but Theseus will turn his back right after attacking. Just make sure you can get out of range of a spin attack, and be wary of the call popping up while you're doing this.

The great news is that Theseus now enters the call phase at 33% health, and it's way easier to nuke him down right after the phase transition.

Once again, Asterius is the bigger threat. Be very careful about his huge spin attack, which can chew right through your health bar. He moves slowly during the spin attack, so if you have ranged options, you can take potshots as you dodge. Additionally, his leap attack deals damage in a shockwave as he lands, so don't dash in immediately.

In chariot form, Theseus deals contact damage from the front, just like the large chariots in Elysium chambers. If you have bonus move speed, you can often follow him around and get in some good backstab damage. Otherwise, he can be difficult to hit, but his bombardment attacks are really easy to dodge, and his machine gun isn't very damaging. Focus on Asterius first, and don't let Theseus distract you.
