Hades is out now, holy heck

In this particular case, a fast paced action/rpg with some ludicrously modular weapon skills. It’s also a roguelite, so those ludicrous modulations are going to change up quite a lot.

I've never played Bastion or Transistor, but I'm a sucker for well-crafted mythological narratives and the trailer seemed to hit the right spots. What can I expect if I've never played those isometric... RPGs? Action RPGs? Dungeon crawlers?

It honestly doesn't feel much like either of those games, except for some Supergiant hallmarks - great art, great music, great writing, very modular and combinable skills, optional difficulty system. In terms of broader feel, it's a fast-paced actioin roguelike. If you imagine Dead Cells, but isometric, you've got a decent sense of it.

Yeah, this is about 0% RPG or dungeon crawler. It's a pure action game.

If you're interested in the mythological elements, they're very well done here.

I bought this when it was still an Epic Store exclusive and still haven't played it. I should probably get on that, huh?

You know what... I think this game is nice. Unclear how far I'll go. I just died at the first boss, so as of now each loop is truly a Quick Bite of entertainment... exactly what I want.

I've just been cautiously quitting the game in case I wanna do something else, but does the game just automatically save in case I wanna play Mario or whatever? Seems like it does.

It saves every chamber. You can't quit during a battle, so finish fighting and quit.

Disclaimer: I basically never quit mid-run, though

I got my first escape! Turns out Adamant Rail with Delta Chamber is pretty good. I guess there's more to see in this game though, which excites me.

I bought this for Switch on Friday and have been binging it since then. An absolutely gorgeous game - I love the character designs and voice acting especially. I've always loved the aesthetics in Supergiant games, but the roguelite gameplay loop and character action-y approach to combat make this my favorite release of theirs.

I also got my first escape last night, also with Adamant Rail. I love the synergies that pop up over the course of a long run - a few of my favorites include Cluster Bomb (fires 5 bombs instead of 1) + Divine Flourish (bomb explosions reflect damage), Knockback + Rupture + Wave Pounding (damage boost against knockback-immune bosses), and Delta Barrel (triple shot attack.) I think I also went to Chaos' realm at least 3 times, which probably helped.

Gonna play this more after work today - there are a couple additional wrinkles to the gameplay that start to reveal themselves right at the end of the game, which I'm excited to play around with.

If you're getting started, my main gameplay suggestion would be to really focus on keys early - you need them to unlock weapons (which are all fun, especially the last two) and mirror perks (and some of the more advanced ones there really open the game up.)

I **just** unlocked the spear, but I really want to keep using the bow.
...same. Well, I mean, I've unlocked everything but (I think) the last weapon. The only times I've beaten Meg (...just twice) I've had a ranged weapon (first shield, now bow) with the lightning... thing. I just choose whichever weapons give bonus souls and my one run with the knuckles was hopeless. I'm bad at melee in this game! Actually haven't used the spear yet.

I just had my best run and got to the diamond boss. Had a bunch of great upgrades (collecting honey gave health upgrades) but I died when it was at like 30 percent. I wasn't expecting to win because I imagine there would've been another round with... skull snake things. Maybe there wouldn't have been! Who can say. But I maxed out the keepsake that gave you an extra resurrection that run and now have to level up worse keepsakes.

Nearly have the next resurrection mirror upgrade. (haven't used keys on more mirror stuff to focus on weapons and so I can feel like I'm finishing something, even though I'm sure there is so much more)

Reached Elysium, and took down the Minotaur, but died shortly after.

Cursed Blade is a *hell* of an upgrade for the sword

Haven't had good luck since, but I did do a second escape right after the first. It seems I have an affinity for ranged weapons.

Well, finally got to Hades. (did not beat him) It was a very lucky run... actually the first time I beat the Minotaur and his pal, too. Couldn't have done it without the boon that restored health to a threshold. Met Thanatos for the first time in a Centaur Heart room. Had all my Death Defiances (two) when I faced Hades. Actually lost them very early bc I was like, "well, I can die twice!" Foolish!

Anyway, it'll be awhile before I get that lucky. Maybe I'll have another Death Defiance by then. (spent all my souls unlocking the next mirror upgrades, though... haven't touched the alt ones, they can wait! I need to feel like I'm finishing my chores)

You're so close! Keep at it!

Death Defiance is definitely the most valuable thing you can unlock early on.

Is there any way to get more Titan Blood after you beat the first boss with all the weapons?

Kind of feel like I backed the wrong horse on a couple of upgrades

I saw some for sale in the last area. 1200 gold, though. Also, I think you can get more by doing stuff to increase the difficulty once you escape. Not there yet, myself.

Oh, I think you can also exchange for them at that shop south of your bedroom. Probably pretty expensive unless they're on sale.

Wait, wait, of course: you simply have to beat the last boss with all the weapons.

Havent seen Sisyphus in a loooong time. I think he's the last person I can get a keepsake from aside from Eurydice, who I haven't met.

The primary way of getting more goodies is by increasing your heat. The game tracks heat by weapon (but not aspect), so you can get rewards at each heat for each weapon.

Still just a dad

My two clears have relied on having the Durable Roots duo boon (recover 1hp/.8 seconds if out of Death Defiance) from Demeter/Athena and Demeter's cast. Being able to cast and take cover really helps a lot of fights.

Kalir

Do you require aid.

That boon is one of the ones that has made me switch from standard Death Defiance to Stubborn Defiance.

karzac

(he/him)
Oh wow, I've never seen that boon - that's a huge deal. Definitely makes Stubborn Defiance more viable.

It just reinforces that I'd really love a way to switch your Mirror loadout midrun.

I got that Duo boon but I don't think I got as far in the fight as I did with all my Death Defiances. Well, now I have a 3rd one. (almost forgot to buy it because it had been so long since I could afford anything I didn't even bother checking the mirror) Next run was with the sword and apparently I still hadn't gotten past the fury boss with that so I got another Titan's Blood... (it's been so long... I spent all 4 that I'd acquired on a Shield Aspect thinking I'd get more relatively shortly... nope)

I can exchange the Titan's Blood for 200 gems. Not sure how good or bad that deal is. I think the only non-cosmetic thing I can buy now upgrades infernal troves. On the other hand, the... current glowy weapon is the bow and arrow and all the aspects I can buy seem boring.

How do you unlock the fourth aspects of each weapon?

The "secret" aspects all have weird unlock conditions. Achilles will tell you about the spear, Artemis about the bow, and I think Chaos about the shield, but I have no clue what you need to do in order to trigger those conversations. I still don't have the secret aspect for the railgun or the fists.

I finally got the end credits, and I think it's time we discussed how Zagreus has his mother's hair.

REVOLUTION GRRR STYLE NOW
(he / him / his)
I've been enjoying the hell out of the Switch port until I ran into the rare bug that renders your save file unplayable - apparently in order to avoid this, you need to have at least one point in all actively available upgrades in the Mirror of Night. They've submitted a patch to Nintendo but it hasn't been deployed yet, and the patch will render your unplayable files playable again. So I'm putting a pause on playing until the patch comes out.

I've made it to the Minotaur in Elysium 3 or 4 times but I die every time.

What Keepsakes do you guys prefer? I like having Athena's Keepsake right away so my first boon can be the Deflect Dash, but after I beat Tartarus I usually switch to the Spiked Collar for the extra health.
