I'm having trouble seeing how Zeus' Aspect is all that great. I got to Asterius/Theseus using it but found it inferior to the Chaos Shield. The Blitz Disc is too slow, and I was frustrated that I couldn't control its distance before recall. It seems nice in theory but not that useful in practice without a miraculous combination of boons.
Zeus Aspect is one of my best weapons by far, but I'd say it requires a certain combo of boons to really shine - not at all miraculous, though. Since it hits so quickly and repeatedly, Zeus's boon on special works amazingly well on it, more than doubling its damage with each hit. Once you add stuff like Jolted and a chance for lightning double-strikes (again, pretty easy to pick up at least one of those in a run), it's an absurd spinning ball of lightning dps. I usually wear Zeus's keepsake to start a shield run so I can (almost) guarantee I start with lightning on special, and the rest is smooth sailing from there. (Having the re-roll talent helps too, of course.)
Support Fire from Artemis also works really well with it; it hits fast and repeatedly, so it launches a ton of arrows (and it can go along with any other main boon build on it, including the lightning above, so I highly recommend looking out for that). I'm still not entirely sure whether Hermes's "special is 10% faster" boon increases the hit rate, or the movement speed.
I'm starting to try it out with other boons. I tried an Ares doom-stacking build with dire misfortune, but dooms hitting for 4-500 still wasn't that impressive compared to lightning dps. (Without Dire Misfortune, Ares is obviously a terrible choice for it.)
Demeter (only revealed after
first reaching the surface) could also work well, esp. with the "burst at 10 stacks" boon. Dionysus might work pretty well too, though I'd worry about it hitting the cap fast and limiting its damage in a set-and-forget scenario. (The duo to increase the max hangover stacks would be good there.) Poseidon could be a great tool for clearing out a lot of space quickly (though that'd probably limit its damage, and the utility is lost on bosses). Artemis or Aphrodite would just increase the damage, though stacking and boosting crits could be a good choice because it hits so many times... But even so, none of them will
beat Zeus's boon, I'm almost certain.
The other trick is just getting used to the timing and positioning. It's very slow, yeah, but you can do things like time it so that it's right over where enemies spawn, and they appear inside it. It excels against slow-moving enemies like the butterfly balls in Elysium. Also, the shield's attack has an innate knockback - you can use that to push enemies back into the disc as it passes through them. Poseidon's boon can be useful here, though on the shield it pushes a pretty long way (position the disc near a wall, perhaps?).
That won't work on bosses, of course, but almost every boss has at least one or two moves/phases where they stand still now and then. After a bit with the disc you get used to its range, and when you can predict those times you can drop the shield right where they stand and let it churn away at them while you run away doing something else. When I have a good shield build, Theseus calls on the gods for his second phase and usually dies before he starts moving again. When the minotaur hits the wall/pillar is a decent time (and you can get a little having it follow you while he's charging after you, though it's tricky). The hydra is easy to get in place long enough to make it eat shit. When the final boss is
warming up his lasers in phase 2, or stops to summon/transition, you have a perfect opportunity. And sending it through a boss and pulling it back just as it passes them is still a good chunk of damage - you don't need a dream scenario to use it every time.
I might be misinterpreting your range comment, but you can press X to recall it at any time, even if it hasn't reached its max distance. You can also run away from it as it tries to come back to you, kiting it behind you and on top of enemies who are also chasing you.
