Hades is out now, holy heck

FWIW I absolutely understand why people prefer Hades and why Pyre seemed to have been a relative dud for Supergiant in terms of sales.

I just absolutely loved every second of Pyre, and so my biggest impression of Hades is always going to be that it tricked me into played Pyre.

Pyre is extremely good, no argument there. Criminally underrated. One might even say it's the Secret Best Supergiant game. I hope they figure out how to do a Switch port so it can get more exposure; I think that would do wonders for it, especially after Hades' success.

As for the Guan Yu spear, I used it once and hated it and never went back. Every other 4th weapon is a powerful, unique take on the base weapon (the 4th fists are the closest to being "plays the same but with different buff modifiers"; the shield combines normal shield mechanics with a bow mechanic, while its Zeus aspect is the weird totally unique aspect (almost feels like they should be switched); the rail feels similar on the surface but works out pretty differently in practice; the sword and bow play completely differently than their base aspects). But the Guan Yu spear just kinda...feels bad. I imagine with certain late-game high-heat builds and practiced players it finds a niche where it can be pretty powerful, but I never had the desire to even try it again after I did its prophecy.

Yeah, Guan Yu was the first Hidden Aspect added to the game - it really feels like they learned their lesson and made the rest of them way better, and never went back and buffed Guan Yu.

this is a joke, i'm still enjoying the game

do wish that they'd always prioritize relationship progressing conversations over "so, i heard you know achilles???" stuff, though
yeah dude, i know achilles, we could have talked about this 3 dozen runs ago, now unlock that heart plz, thnx

I made the Epilogue happen. Went faster than it could have because I just used a guide. I doubt I would have naturally got, say, Poseidon's or Hermes' heart to unlock any time soon otherwise. Even with a guide, many just refused to move forward. Continued to have fun on all my runs, but still think they should have put a higher priority on heart unlocking conversations. Clearly they can do this, because the final Epilogue initiating conversations took immediate priority over any other business, while heart unlocking conversations seemed to be in the same pool with everything else.

I ended up in a place where I would consistently get to the final boss on EM3 without losing any lives and clear it easily, but always lost on EM4 runs during the final boss' new life bar. I could probably learn the EM4 final boss fight, but I don't feel compelled to play this any more, so I'm done with this, I think, before the game overstays its welcome.

This was the most I enjoyed a game of this general type, I think, although in general I would rather play a dense, authored experience over something built to be a Forever Game. At times the grind became too transparent for my taste, even when I was on a long streak of clears and getting consistent rewards.

EM4 is Very Tough, it's true. I've had (few) runs where I crushed it as easily as a normal fight, and (more) times where I have been just absolutely stomped into dust.

I find the endless possibilities for builds what kept me going back, and even occasionally gets me an urge to play even now. I got the epilogue, finished the grind, maxed out everything, I got 2 of the 3 statues and don't really care to push for the 3rd, I'm done. And yet every now and then, mostly when someone else is talking about it, I'll think "Ooh, what about these boons on the Hades-aspect spear...?" or "You know, a Demeter fist run sounds fun right now..."

Part of the problem (at least for me) is that the game assumes you're going to fail a bunch per layer and when I was still learning the game it only took me an attempt or two per boss max to finish out a layer. Those failures would mill out a lot of the generic unlock and chat events, but if you just keep succeeding (and trying out different weapons/boons/etc) you just keep piling on unlocked dialogues and event triggers.

I ended up just doing a dozen odd low heat runs just to run out excess dialogue triggers and the like before I could start making real progress on a few hearts and it still took waaaaaay too long to get things lined up well enough to finish the Epilogue requirements.

Sequel just got announced!

Supergiant's never done a sequel before. In a sense, I'm a bit disappointed, because I'd rather see them do something new. But in another sense, doing a sequel for them is "doing something new", so I'm interested to see how it turns out.

I didn't know I wanted a Hades sequel, but now that it's been announced I am instantly hyped.

Looking at it, I think it's all the stuff they wanted to put into Hades, but couldn't figure out how. Then they found more stuff and said "screw it, let's make sequel." And the world is ready for it.

Part of me is a bit disappointed that it's a sequel, but they don't seem to be any less dedicated to making it a unique amazing experience. They're examining the Titanomache and looking at witchcraft as a central conceit, have another new minor character to build up... And frankly, I have to be honest, even if it was literally Just More Hades I don't think I would be disappointed. Hades fucking slaps.

I am not in the least disappointed that it's a sequel. Ask me again around Hades IV, but for now, Hades is something no one else has pulled off, so who else to pull it off again but Supergiant? I'm confident they'll keep it fresh.

Fuck yeah I am hyped. But now I'll have to decide if I'm getting it during Early Access or not. I didn't care about roguelikes when the original was still in EA!

I played the original on Switch, so playing the new one on PC might feel weird or different? And/or I'd have to double-dip! I don't want to get my fill and burn out on the game before it even comes out!

FWIW, my understanding is that the original Hades improved substantially over its time in Early Access. I'm certainly going to wait for it to release in full, but that's my usual policy regardless.

The one time I've played a game in early access (Gloomhaven) I enjoyed it a lot but played so much that my engagement with the full release has covered quite a lot less time. So I will wait.

Hades definitely improved a lot over the course of EA, but it was also super fun from day one, and there were some aspects of the game that played up uniquely well in the EA format (dialogue about the house being under construction for instance). I played the game for almost 2 years in EA and then started fresh in full release and still loved it.

Totally justified for anyone to wait for the full release, but for those interested in getting in early, I'd recommend the Early Access experience

This is basically why I never play early access games. By the time they actually come out, I've had my fill and am no longer interested.

Congratulations!

Do you think you'll go for more runs, or do you feel like you've already got what you wanted out of the game?

I can see myself continuing, though I don't think I'll wring it out so to speak. I'm not even close to being sick of the characters yet and I want to know what's going on with Tisiphone, etc.

I have had no end of fun in the duo battle by making them hit each other. It's great!

Grinding out Titan Blood, even when you're pretty selective about your spending... not so much.
