Here's what I think: we're still in Zimmytown, in which people sometimes think they are other people, and which Zimmy has some influence over when she is more lucid. Zimmy is making both Annies think they are the same, combined Annie, as a way of helping them get over their bickering.

I have to admit I'm very disappointed with this chapter and its resolution. After introducing the Two Annies Situation as one of Loup's dastardly tricks, but denying an immediate solution and having the two of them co-exist for a period, while raising questions about which one of them is "more real" and whether going back to one Annie might involve the uncomfortable possibility of one of them being winked out of existence… and getting a lot of great character interactions and development out of it… to just decide "oh yeah, Zimmy merged them, nbd" is staggeringly anticlimactic. It doesn't feel like the metaphysical questions have been resolved, nor that Annie (as a whole) has actually learned anything during her separation period that she couldn't have by her lonesome. Tom may have shown himself to be a master of tying seemingly-unrelated things together in a very satisfying way, but right now, I'm left wondering what the point of any of this was.

Didn't the arbiter already say that neither of them belonged in this particular universe? I have to hope that this is not the final word on the Dual-Annie Paradox.

It seems to have been more to drive Kat's arc than Annie's. I mean, I'll grant you that it didn't answer a lot of questions that were raised related to Annie, but some important Kat stuff happened as a result, so I wouldn't say it was ultimately pointless.

IMO it's a big assumption to think that this is the end of the "two Annies" matter in full, even if they are one Annie again. Is it nbd in the end? We'll see, I suppose. Things are often a big deal in ways they don't initially appear to be in this series. This doesn't strike me as a "the end" event so much as a "and then" event, not least because of whatever Zimmy is and how that might factor in later.

idk, I guess I never needed a big climactic event to reunite them? This seems as good a method as any to me, it's whatever's next I'm interested in. The main thrust of the two Annies has been in how they are a bit different, how one of them gets along better with dad, how one of them missed out on months without knowing it. Now she's on the same page with herself.

I mean my understanding from the previous exchanges is that we're still in wandavision zimmyspace, so there are a lot of ways the story can go from here that don't involve convenient clean resolutions

I really hope you guys are right and that there's still a, I don't want to say twist coming but some further development. Because if that's the end of the Two Annies thing it would definitely be extremely anticlimactic and disappointing.

Or maybe this is the bait, and the coming switch is Three Annies!

Hmm, I thought they were back out, but if they're still in Zimmyspace and only united temporarily, yeah, that's a whole other thing in itself.

in the long run I don't think I've ever really felt let down by the storytelling in GC. I cut seemingly out-of-left-field events like this a lot of slack as a result.

I just remained bristled that something that should have been a big event and had a really cool splash page, essentially happened off-screen and out of view. Reuniting the two Annies should have been a really cool visual, and instead it feels like back in the old days when you missed an episode because a baseball game went into extra innings.

Well I guess that might be that after all. But still not sure why their recombining should be any flashier than their duplication, which also happened offscreen and out of view (and completely unknown to either of them until they met months later in Court Annie's subjective time).

I like to remember we're looking at Tom's vision of the world, and this is the way he wanted to show us this moment. I kind of love that he feels that a young woman putting away her makeup tells us everything we need to know.

I shouldn't be surprised. I've mentioned before when it's struck me that a lot, if not most, of the major plot beats in Gunnerkrigg happen without much fanfare or drama, often in confusing and not-clearly-detailed circumstances.

Lets not forget that Annie has a long history of hiding her true emotions from everyone. And going by the chapter title, I'm guessing that an Annie is locked away in her mind. So one has control at a given time and Makeup Annie just happens to be the driver at the moment.
