Well, I Am Setsuna, I do not appreciate you populating a dungeon with enemies that can give me a TPK with status effects without any warning.

I appreciate that less when it’s about an hour since the last time I saved.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 has very satisfying gameplay but holy hell there's about four times as much dialogue as there needs to be. Not only does it constantly repeat the plot point (yes, this is the fifth time you specifically have talked about how this town used to have this industry, but then all that changed and the children of hargon blamed it on builders and now you want to restore the town to its former glory), it constantly repeats your current mission objectives as well.

Also the second island's... concept is really off putting and uncomfortable! Stop having all these grown ass men talk about how they've known the only girl on the island since she was a child and now they all want to date her!!!

Kazin

did i do all of that?

Pokemon Stadium 2:

- only lets you use the 2x and 3x speed GB Tower if your save on your G/S/C cart has beat the Elite Four already. Those modes are for endgame grinding only, apparently!
- the reward Pokemon are only downloadable to your cartridge if you've caught at least 150 Pokemon on that save file. No playing through G/S/C with an Earthquake Gligar! Yes, I know these were only obtainable by beating everything in the game, but I downloaded a save so I don't have to do that, because:
- the game doesn't lower the levels of your Pokemon to enter tournaments, you have to stop leveling at certain points to play through the Stadium matches! Ughhhhhhhh
- there's weird loading times occasionally while using the GB Tower

Phantasy Star IV is certainly one of the greatest JRPGs ever made. And yet, it's frustrating trying to formulate your battle strategy when there's no indication what most of the Techs and Skills do without consulting a Wiki or trial and error.

I haven’t played it yet, but I’m getting big Indivisible vibes from reviews and impressions of Cris Tales in how they are both gorgeous 2.5D faux-JRPGs with neat concepts and characters ultimately marred by the devs inexperience making and balancing RPGs.

This is essentially why, years ago, I stopped buying into any amount of hype people throw at indie JRPG-type games that have gorgeous art, because that honestly doesn't mean shit to me if the actual JRPG stuff is bad or uninspired.

Indie All devs should have to get a license to make JRPGs, you earn it by working in RPG Maker until you manage something playable

That seems reasonable. Would they be able to sell their RPG maker game (for a reasonable price) in order to fund future development projects?

I have paid for RPG maker games and have played others that I wish I could pay for!

Or a Ko-Fi, or itch.to lets you pay for free games (or pay more than the asking price for paid games), yes. But I'm still working on developing an accreditation process and licensure, not to mention arranging the public funding for further development after a dev achieves a certain level of success. Plus some of the secret best RPG devs are insistent on making niche fetish games that have inherently limited mainstream appeal.

(I also feel bad because I just took a break from Cris Tales after about an hour and... honestly it's unlikely I'll ever get back to it, it was kind of lackluster. And I hate timed hits. But I'll probably still buy the next one because I'm a sucker I am ecstatic the rare times these kinds of project succeed. See: Destiny Connect)

I don't get Plok. Some people claim that it's a unjustly ignored and pioneering cult classic, but it strikes me as an illustrated guide to everything you shouldn't do when designing a side scrolling platformer. You've got your contrived, unlikeable mascot. (A pile of dirty clothes? Really?) You've got limited offensive capabilities and moves that seem counterintuitive. There's a somersault leap that looks like something Sonic would do, but trying to attack enemies with it only gets you hurt. You've got four way scrolling playfields that don't so much provide guidance to their goals as challenge you to figure out where the hell things are, while being mindful of enemies and traps that love to take you by surprise. Will that moving platform take you closer to the goal, carry you away from it, or just dump you in the sea out of spite? You spins the wheel and you takes your chances.

It stumbles across some good ideas every now and then. On rare occasions, you find a gift box that temporarily transforms Plok into something useful, like a firefighter who fights with fire, or a boxer who can fling his limbs without being left helpless in the process, or a turn of the century detective armed with buckshot. (These costumes vanish shortly after you get them, ensuring that you won't have TOO much fun with the game.) Also, the music hits a few high notes... the theme that plays when you find the boxer costume sounds a lot like something from the film Rocky, and there's stage music that isn't just inspired by progressive rock, but sounds like it could have been a lost track from Yes's Fragile album. Nevertheless, I feel like Plok's status as an underground hit is undeserved. It spends too much time squandering any goodwill it earns, giving with one hand while kidney punching the player with the other.

Plok's soundtrack doesn't have a stinker in it, because it's Tim Follin, but it's still pretty much an early-90s Europlatformer that happened to land on SNES instead of Amiga, and without the benefit of the Super Mario Club.

I only played it briefly and there’s a possibility this was just a fault in my controller or else something that I can only assume will be fixed up real soon with a patch, but The Black Book (a recent story-focused deck builder on Switch) doesn’t seem to accept any cardinal direction inputs; just angles.

This is… baffling, especially for a game that is 90% menu choice and just a Weensy bit of walks-em-up.

Got stuck for a bit on the second screen because I couldn’t run in a straight line to the map transition; had to zig-zag like I was avoiding sniper fire

Edit- It may have been the joycon; a proper controller is okay

I’d also argue that Plok is better than a lot of its contemporaries of the 16 bit era. If given a choice between it and other B-tier platformers of the era like say, Earthworm Jim, I’d pick Plok first.

I absolutely love Carrion, and it being a stealth troid-em-up where you play as a wad of mouth-tacles wrecking havoc on a science lab full of peeps.

But MAN OH MAN, does it need some kind of auto-map *badly*. It is *so easy* to get lost in the game, and all the areas look similar enough that even if you're heading in the right decision you might not realize it, especially if you take a break form it for a day or two.

The closest thing there is to a way-finder is that you can use echolocation to find the nearest point of interest; but it's the nearest one, not the next one; if you happen to be close to one you've already found, it will point you towards that regardless.

You talking about it in Discord reminded me that I had been interested in it, and despite the bad news about the map I went ahead and picked it up. Apparently Axiom Verge 2 left me in a bit of a mood. Anyway, I love it so far. Wait, that's not a gripe!

I thought the game was too linear to require a map but I didn't really spend much time trying to get the secret items.

The linearity isn't a problem as much as the fact that each area is a maze of dark rooms that alternate between "lab" and cave" and aren't easy to keep mental track of

I can see that. But so far (I haven't reached the third size yet, just got invisibility) everything has struck me as a very linear path through a non-linear environment. It loops back on itself and through past areas and such, but only in its prescripted course. I've adjusted my approach to not see it as a Metrovania and just go with the flow, and it makes sense to me that way.

Yeah, I'm with you in this. It's not up there with the likes of Mario, but it's fun, not too ridiculously unfair, and has one of the very best soundtracks on the SNES.

Allegedly Miyamoto really liked it and wanted to help with its development. I'd love to know how much truth there is to that.

I've rented Assassin's Creed Valhalla and was excited to play it. But the voices don't work. No subtitles, no voices. Found a lot of other people have this error but fixed it by downloading the "English language pack"... which appears to no longer be on the Xbox store.

I play these games to hear the conversations and lore so this is unplayable for me. WTF. Sounds like completely uninstalling and reinstalling might work, but with even with a disc with all the updates that's like 20% of our internet for the month. Trying some TV sound settings and a few other things, but probably just returning this after the six hours of installing/updates I went through.

This is on an Xbox! I play consoles specifically to avoid this sort of nonsense!

Can you take your system to a library or coffee shop to finish that download? I had to do this with my Wii U once to purchase content when it was on sale... I didn't have proper internet at home at that time, so my options were limited.

That's a bad glitch

It's really sad how many people had this issue! Ubisoft gonna Ubisoft, I guess, and glad I just rented the game but still really dumb. I'll probably find a Let's Play or something to satisfy my curiousity about it.

I took ~6 hours to download at home so probably not for a bunch of reasons, but I do like the mental image of just taking over a table at a coffee shop with a TV and Xbox for a day.

Hey, I literally did this! Except the Wii U doesn't need a TV, just the game pad, but it's almost the size of a TV.

Libraries tend to have televisions, so that would probably help you if you went this route.

Eh, I ended up watching several cutscenes last night, thinking I could watch things coming up to at least have some guidance. And there's a disturbing amount of violence against animals in this game. I really don't like it! I really don't remember the previous games being this brutal to animals or humans although it's definitely been increasing since the Ezio series. And yes, Vikings and that time in human history were brutal so this accurate but ugh. Not what I want. So oh well, purpose served by renting I suppose.
