right but then the "retro" elements seem to be the relatively low resolution, small palette aesthetic and things like "they're mostly short and difficult games and a lot of them have no saves" where i think the latter obviously (and unsurprisingly) carries a lot of people's criticisms of the games. that's the kind of thing that gets projected onto the past and i would certainly say it's not totally disconnected from what i feel is the reality of 1980s games. but i do think a lot of these games are mean because they're designed so tightly around crisp modern controls and a lot of built up knowledge about how games work. to me that's a very different vibe

So I recently finally got around to the RE2 remake (mostly, as Claire, I was very tired in the lab and the game crashed, I'll come back to it) and... hmm. I knew going in this wasn't going to be as good as original RE2, just because RE2 is genuinely like, in my top 5 games of all time and all, and taking it as its own thing yeah, it's pretty good, but the more I think about it, the more frustrated I am with how every little story twist it throws in just kinda... makes a blatantly bad call to axe something from the original in trade.

The most obvious example is Marvin, the cop you meet in the police station early on who originally gives you a little exposition then dies while you're off getting some key. They expanded his character! A lot! He's a real guy you kinda keep checking in with the whole first half of the game and such. That's great! ... except in order to give him all these extra scenes, they cut out basically every single interaction between Leon and Claire in the game? Like yeah, it's cool this one guy gets to be more of a guy, but we're giving up on two characters with some fun chemistry who both seem to be going on simultaneous adventures in this same location and doing a bad job of explaining kind of important stuff to each other. Nobody listens to Leon and all. The game feels much lesser without that.

Then we've got Chief Irons. Arch, scenery-chewing, "EVERYONE'S GONNA DIE!" Chief Irons. The remake decides to make him a more realistic scuzzier sweatier guy. You don't meet him in his office waxing poetic over a corpse, you meet him in the garage just pulling a gun on you to kidnap Sherry. And like, OK, I appreciate change for change's sake, but damn what a wonderfully memorable character the original has and this is just... some guy. Again, the game feels lesser for it. Plus we replace Sherry's solo adventure finding stuff to toss through a vent with this really toothless stealth bit in an orphanage which has really just no tension at all, a fail state that doesn't really make narrative sense (oh no, I failed so Sherry is trapped here until her dad comes to attack her, as opposed to if I get through it at which point her entrapment ends because... her dad shows up to attack her). There's also a kind of ambiguous goal at one point potentially leading to multiple restarts with a long cutscene just after the one save point, but I'm criticizing story decisions.

But yeah, so Sherry's dad. I feel like the transformations just really do not work without that low poly, just moving vertices around by hand thing, and he's too damn shiny, but also, this remake is VERY against the bombastic musical stings that usually accompany all his scenes (and Mr. X's. and various other moments). So just as a baseline, he lacks gravitas here. And then we've got the big surprised twist that after he implants the chief with a chestburster who ends up in the sewers, rather than one big boss fight you just kinda lay into on a bridge, we get like half a dozen of these big blobby Birkin babies popping out of pipes or deep water. And OK, I like that, that's a good little surprise... but we have these instead of the alligator. Also instead of spiders for that matter, which are just completely cut along with crows. Also they're visually close enough to Birkin's final form and kinda wimpy so, this just further weakens his whole presence.

The one twist on things I DID like was getting down to the police basement, where the morgue is actually a very subdued dread-building experience instead of a bit of chaos, and the conspicuous lack of dogs (they aren't COMPLETELY cut from the game, but damn nearly) is explained when you reach the kennel where two lickers just kinda completely went to own on them. Which works because mechanically lickers are as big of a threat here as they should be. They're basically hunters, but presenting a smaller profile and favoring the ceiling as a place to hang out... that said I don't think I've seen one get all tongue-lashy.

Oh and also this remake just completely fails to convey the feeling that there's hundreds or thousands of zombies threatening to get inside.

And this isn't a plot thing but like, literally EVERY puzzle (with one exception notable exception I'm pretty sure I managed to softlock) has been replaced with a 3-character combination lock? WTF is up with that?

Another Crab's Treasure is overall a fun and charming little Souls-like, and on the balance I enjoy it, but it's not without a few faults. For one, the camera and controls are a bit wonky and considering that there are some relatively precise platforming areas, that can absolutely be a Problem. I've jumped/walked/fallen for no reason right off a ledge or attacked myself off or been launched at a weird angle so many times. Luckily you don't die from falls, just take a bit of damage (and can even negate that damage with an accessory), so it's more of an annoyance than a fatal flaw. But hooboy is it an annoyance.

Second, and this isn't necessarily the game's fault, but it runs like absolute soggy ass on Switch. Frame drops, short freezes, and two or three outright crashes. I do recommend the game, but I also recommend getting it on a different platform.

The map is so limited wtf! I don't need markers or anything, but let me at least pan around! The structure is a bit... Yeah, the checkpoints feel a liiiittle sparse, and I reeeeeeeally miss the option from Elden Ring to teleport back to one at any time. Especially after missing a jump and having to climb back up...

Blasphemous 2 has so many collectibles and quest items and stuff and so much of what should be base mechanics are hidden too deep inside the game. Rosary Beads are like little relics you can collect, but you start with only one slot. I'm more than halfway through the game by my reckoning and have collected three or four of the knots to expand my slots, but have yet to come upon the NPC that lets me do so (and won't for some time, I gather). Similarly I have 2-3 of the things that expand my fervor (MP) bar, but also have yet to find that NPC. Meanwhile the collectibles and turnins I actually CAN use are equally or more scarce. I know teasing the future is just a part of metrovanias, but this is ridiculous.
 
I've been playing Chapter 3 of Terranigma, and honestly haven't been enjoying it. After the events of Chapter 2, it feels like a big step back in scope, which wouldn't be so bad if they'd managed to keep the narrative interesting. But unfortunately, they dropped the ball hard here. The protagonist gets sent on a generic RPG errand, which turns out to be a twist for...creating a zombie town level. And not even a good zombie town, just a really tedious one filled with obnoxious enemies and a really dumb perspective trick.

The game briefly redeems itself with the goofiness of Loire, where a cartoonishly evil king is overthrown through wacky hijinks, paving way for democracy in fantasy France. The protagonist can even vote in their first election! But then there's the dungeons, and, to be quite honest, they aren't very interesting. They aren't bad, per se, but they lack much in the way of memorability or character, and Sylvain Castle in particular feels rather drawn out.

Then of course there's Bloody Mary, who sucks hard, but honestly she doesn't stand out much design wise, as the game has consistently had rather awful bosses. What does stand out is the quest design post her dungeon; the game starts to meander quite a bit, as the protagonist is given no solid direction. It also loses a lot of its charm; besides some cute gags in its take on a major North American city, the towns feel very uninteresting, and the dungeons either get too simplistic, or shamelessly recycle graphics and concepts from earlier dungeons.

I really hope the game picks up soon, my interest in it has been threatened quite a bit by this chapter, and if it were to continue on this track, I would end up likely ditching the game before seeing its end, which would feel quite awful indeed.

Yeah,I always lose steam with Terranigma, when you get to the part where humans are relevant. I love the underworld and always enjoyed the part where the NPCs are animals and plants. But afterwards, I always thought it loses something.

The performance in Mario & Luigi Brothership is so dogshit that it’s affecting my ability to play the battles. You can’t have severe stutter and lag in a timing based game that gets really goddamn hard like this one does. I’m over 40 hours in and am ready to give up. There is some really good stuff in this game, yet it’s surrounded by other things that are strikingly not good.

This has been a pretty crummy last year for a system as big as the Switch. Nintendo systems usually have notably lackluster final years, but 2024 didn’t have a single real hit for Switch. I liked Echoes of Wisdom, though it was pretty devisive overall. Brothership got nuked from orbit by that IGN review and just vanished from the general discourse. Switch 2 cannot come soon enough.

The last first-party Nintendo game that was developed mostly internally or by wholly owned subsidiaries and wasn't a remake of some sort was Super Mario Bros. Wonder. I think it's fair to say that they've been hard at work on the games for the Switch Advance launch year.

It's not that interesting, but I will say the final year of Switch isn't as horrible as some other final years. That being said, Legends ZA seems to confuse me to no end. Will it be Twilight Princess and release on both consoles, or is it launching just for the Switch successor?

And in general, I haven't been able to play many 2024 games. From being more cautious with what I buy to having just as much fun with older games, I don't have a need for it. I'm interested in what 2025 has to offer though.

I think I was just missing a door because I found them right after posting this, but I still had found literally every knot before being able to turn in a single one (and three of five MP upgrade items). There's also these wax seeds and gold lumps and soooo many weird little collectible turn-ins and, I dunno. I just don't care anymore.

I got to a penultimate boss who's really hard and kinda realized I didn't care enough to keep going. I got all my movement upgrades and exploration and backtracking for loot in, and don't really give the world's flyingest fuck about the lore, so I might just call it good and move on. It's weird, the game does a lot of stuff really well but just doesn't really coalesce for some reason. For me, anyway!
 
I love all the ideas in Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma, but there's a reason why Soul Blazer is the one I've played through dozens of times. Just something so direct about the gameplay loop, as simple as it is. Go through a well designed dungeon, kill some enemies, free animals/people/spirits, hit a roadblock, go back to the village to check in on all the new stuff. I don't care at all that the combat itself is relatively simple or that you can wait by the enemy spawners. That game only loses steam when you get to the very final world/boss and there's nothing left to free.

I thought the one I had in mind was on LP archive but if it was then maybe it was removed for some reason.

But there are a couple of LPs of it in the TT archives.

Beyond Oasis is fun and beautiful, but every flying enemy from bees to bats are bullshit. I can't tell where they are in 3D space, and they stunlock me while other enemies pound away at my health. Speaking of which, sure wish I could get more HP healing drops rather than SP, which is usually useless because there's nothing around that would allow me to summon anyway.

Been playing Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for a few days and generally having a good time, but today I started a side quest. Game says "This is going to be a long quest, do you still want to do it?" Sure, let's go. The quest dumps me in a new area without any of my upgrades, some of which I earn back over the next four-ish hours (!). Most of the stuff I'm doing is fine, towards the end there's a kind of bullshit mandatory combat challenge, followed by a very difficult boss. My reward for all of this? The three amulets I found while doing the side quest (none of which I want to trade my current setup for), and a friggin' cosmetic skin.

I just looked it up and it turns out that was the DLC. I think maybe if I'd known it that's what I was playing beforehand I might've been less annoyed by the relative lack of rewards at the end, but I definitely did not experience it in the ideal way. Not sure how much of that is on me.

I dunno, it was early enough in the game that I figured maybe it just warns you if a particular quest is going to be longer than expected. I'd seen a lot of articles talking about how the game has excellent accessibility features, maybe that was one of them?

Like I said, I'm not sure how much of this was on me. I'm not saying I couldn't have pieced it together, but I've also been avoiding spoilers and didn't think to check if the DLC had a specific starting point. At the start of the game I did get a message saying "You can start the DLC from your main hub area after doing a certain mission," but the quest you get to actually do so doesn't begin until you go to a different area altogether, so I guess it just didn't click for me.

I've put four hours into Avowed so far, so I guess it's doing something right but I don't quite know what that something is. May have been a disservice playing Avowed right after Dragon Age: Veilguard. DAV is fairly snappy, gets you into things quick. I feel like Avowed is still in the "set up" portion of the game, it's much slower paced, proper Western RPG-ass RPG.

Disappointing after Outer Worlds was so good. Maybe I need sci-fi Obsidian and not fantasy Obsidian.

I'm digging Assassin's Creed Shadows but I'm now convinced the game is called that because of how dark it is. Ubi probably should have taken a more stylized approach because goddamn I can't see shit in this game half the time.

I just tried Super Mario Bros 2 for the first in my life. I think I hate it. I never grew up with an NES, so nearly its entire library is new to me, except for the rare NES entries in certain game collections like Castlevania. Everything in this game wrong. You can’t jump on guys to kill them. The jumps themselves don’t feel right. There are cherries that do…something?

I can understand that people who played at or around when SMB2 came out were probably rolling with the punches. Who knew what a videogame sequel was supposed to be at that point? Anything could happen. For someone like me who has every post-Mario World safely downloaded in my brain, I can’t parse this nightmare world where you throw a potion that creates a door to Shadesmar, or a scary mask chases you when you pick up a key.

SMB3 is not like this, right?

SMB3 is one of the greatest games in the NES library, and if you're about to play it for the first time I'm kinda jealous!
