Gripe about What You're Playing 2: Bellyache-tric Boogaloo

Yeah, like I mentioned elsewhere as much as I wanted to like it it's too rough around the edges.

In terms of combat, think multiple combat gauntlet sections were healing involves an attack that auto locks you into a blind charge at an enemy leaving you open to taking just as, if not more, damage than you're healing.

Edit: My other big complaint is obtuse objectives with no clear delineation between main plot quests and side quests.

What’s going on with the combat
All the enemies are absolute damage sponges. Attacks barely chip away at their health bars.

Also like a decent third of all the hits are knockdowns, that lock you in place for a get-up animation.

One of the obviously intended BIG IDEAS is knocking enemies into other enemies with your charge attack, which takes off one of the charge attacks you need to hit them with, because they all have like charge attack counters. Problem is the distance they seem to fly never seems to reach, and if the ground isn't flat, which is very common, they'll harmlessly bounce off in weird directions.

There's a block button, but the window in which you're actually blocking doesn't seem to match up with the animation, resulting in a lot of hits that feel unfair.

On the whole, every time I've HAD to do combat it's been a lot more frustrating than fun. Which is a shame, because everything else about the game is just great!

Okay, so, an update to Fight n Rage put in a new mode that let you play as any character in the story mode, instead of just the main three. And to unlock it you have to first purchase three specific alternate characters in the unlock shop.

And for those characters to appear in the shop, you have to beat them X many times in the story mode. For two of them; not an issue, they’re a common late game enemy and recurring miniboss.

But the third…

The third shows up in one single level as a boss. And this is the kind of beat-em-up with branching paths. Lots of branching paths. And she only appears in one.

One of the games greatest strengths is the huge amount of level variety, and I’m stuck trying to remember how to play it the same way eight times in order to unlock a mode I really want to play.

There are other things to complain about with Fight n Rage as well, as it has some issues beyond the beeps and boops of playing it, but this is what’s actively annoying me.

I loved Gravity Rush back when I played it on the PSVita my friend had that I borrowed/grabbed when he came to visit me in Japan (and I managed to clear the whole game in that week! Even if I had to stay up way late to finish it that last night). When I got my PS4 set up, I immediately picked up the HD remaster and GR2. I played a bit of the remaster in between other games and still enjoyed it, but never went back and finished.

Well, the other day I started Gravity Rush 2 and...it's disappointing so far. The main issue is that I'm stuck on this little floating settlement instead of having a whole city to fly around and explore and collect shit from. And that's the best part of the original game! The current hub is nothing, just some annoying platforms to pop around while picking up quests.

Maybe I get to an actual city later on. I really hope so, because if GR2 remains mission-focused like this with a boring hub I don't think I'll get through it.

You do. You absolutely do! But Gravity Rush 2 takes its damn time getting to the good stuff in a way that GR1 never did. My number one complaint with GR2 was that it had pacing (and some random bs missions) like I expected GR1 to have...

But! Gravity Rush 2 does go to some interesting places by the end, so don't get discouraged.

Just lost about an hour of progress in Disco Elysium because the game doesn't auto save when you think it will. Jesus Christ.

Not really a gripe, just, dunno. Way back, in the mid 90s, I guess, I played the first level of Turok, for the N64. I had no memory card, and this was one of the rare games that required one for saving. It wasn't my game, just borrowed it, so no big deal. But still. I could make it through the first level, but never explore any further. Was always curious about this one.

Fast forward to now, where I play the game again. Saving is no concern anymore, but the controls, oh dear, they are bad. You jump with R. The C-buttons are for moving, the analog stick moves the camera. Which is really, really weird, even for me, someone who nearly never plays FPS games. Not that big of a deal, I guess, as I can just map everything around, but still. Jumping with R. That's just bad. It get it, it's very early console 3D, but it just hurts.

Anyway, the game is also harder than I remembered. For some reason, I remember the first level not being too hard, but where I stopped, I was nearly out of ammo and my health wasn't that great either. I remember playing VERY defensively as a kid, so this might explain me not having too much of a problem there, back then. But now, it just feels brutal. Which might also be, because I just nearly never play games of this genre. Who knows? Doesn't matter.

Dunno, it's a shame that this doesn't work for me, because I always remembered it, wanting to play more of the game, not really being able to. And I always enjoy playing old N64 games, with that specific style of blocky polygons. Oh well, I guess I'll finally play Chameleon Twist 2 instead.

The Turok re-master did a pretty good job of smoothing out some of the rougher stuff. I actually LIKE the weird Turok controls and even map the Goldeneye controls to be similar when I play it.

I never played Turok 2 as a kid and did not have as much fun with the re-master. The game is just so dark and dingy and the layouts of some levels are just so labyrinthine I found myself going in circles.

I generally don't play FPS-games, I just have a weak spot for old ones (specifically: DOOM) and games with early N64 graphics. A remaster wouldn't work for me. Still, thanks for the info.

I played Turok 2 back in the day, too. One of the rare games were I did nothing but abuse cheat codes from a magazine to just run everywhere or simply skip to the bosses. They were fun, especially with infinite everything for me. And I did beat the first level, but only with a walkthrough from the same magazine I had the cheat codes from. So, not at all how one who actually enjoys a good FPS would like to play the game, in general.

But yeah, even with codes, running around these giant levels became old very soon. I guess I just never was into this genre, even when I was only around 12. Still an age where I played most of everything, and still couldn't get into that one.

I just lost between a half-hour and an hour of of progress in Sports Story because of a bug that locked the game up. I don't remember if there was an auto-save it went back to, or that happened to be when I saved last, but this'll teach me to save frequently. Blegh. I'm going to have to re-do an annoying soccer goal challenge among the other progress I'll have lost. Really wish it had auto-save...

I don't know when I last hit a roadblock like the Moose boss in Teslagrad 2. It is not clear that I have done anything to hurt it in any of my dozens of tries. The game just doesn't seem to communicate what you are supposed to be doing. It's enough that I am probably going to abandon a game that I was really enjoying up to that point.

I tried Infinite Guitars on Gamepass last night and it was nothing like what I thought it would be. Dialogue is awkward, the rhythm bits are super boring and repetitive (I was on easy so I'll cut some slack for that), the objectives are vague, the dialogue choices constantly affect my stats in arbitrary ways and I strongly dislike the main character's personality.

But the main issue is that exploring the world is an absolutely boring slog. I played for a bit and saw nothing of the cool exciting battles in the trailers. You move painfully slowly (and I swear my speed got even slower on some screens for no discernible reason) and running zooms in the camera so you're discouraged from doing it. You're collecting small icons that weren't explained until maybe five map screens later, and I still haven't seen what to do with them. The maps are way too busy and parsing what is and isn't walkable is incredibly difficult. There was one point where I couldn't walk up some rubble then returned after wandering around confused for a bit and could. From other reviews I've seen the map does glitch like this so that's even more frustrating.

After finally getting to a large boss I was told to go walk back and look for an item the boss threw. Once I saw it was just more of going through these confusing screens of recycled rubble assets I realized I had no interest in continuing. It likely gets better once I get to the other party members and mechanics shown in the trailer but I honestly don't want to play anymore.

I want to like Sackboy's Big Adventure. Super Mario 3D World is a favorite of mine and this a lot like that, but there is just this ephemeral sense of corporate disingenuousness. Like some people wanted to make a 3D World clone, some people wanted to make Little Big Planet minus Media Molecule, some other people clearly wanted to utilize Sony's vast catalog of popular music IP, and they are butting heads with each other in the level design on how to make this all work together.

Whoever at Capcom decided to add a time based rank system to the Resident Evil 4 Remake is a butthead. The game is way too long and linear, unlike the classic style ones where good planning can make a big difference in time spent. Every guide I’ve seen says to stagger everybody you can and run through every encounter, and I don’t think it’s a fun way to play this game.

I'm playing Cosmic Star Heroine, and generally enjoy the game. But it has real issues when it comes to writing. I think these are the people responsible for Cthulhu saves the World, and generally goofy games, which really shows. Everyone is snarky, there are no vulnerable moments, and even if there were, the constant hyperactive pacing wouldn't leave time for that. I understand that it wants to be fast-paced, like Chrono Trigger, but that game also took breaks from the action, like when Lucca repairs Robo, after he gets beaten up by the other robots. Here it's just constant action, which feels exhausting. I mean, not surprising, that's how their other games work too.

But that constant snarkiness also just kills any emotional impact anything might have. Near the start, when we learn about what the organization we work for is up to, there isn't a single moment of dread or whatever. Just "Yeah, we are now going against this super powerful agency that controls everything and tends to assassinate people. Our whole life as we knew it will be over, but doesn't matter, fun adventure!!!" Dunno, other RPGs generally give at least lip service to the fact that this might be a deeply horrifying experience, having to choose between your consciousness and being a decent person.

At least the story was focused up to now, but just now, it started to do whatever, I guess? I was caught by my former superior of Evil Agency, and supposed to get publicly assassinated (former superior thought that might be better, than showing the public how one of their agents lost faith in them). First, there is, of course, no scene between, where the main character thinks about her bad situation (yeah, I know, her friend promised to free her, but still). But more relevant here, after the assassine is stopped in the last minute, former superior is gone, because?, and instead, after actively fighting against a bounty hunter, a giant robot is dropped into the city, for no reason, I think? We fight it, because why not, kill the guy inside and take control of it. Which is good, because suddenly, a creature appears (not being a thing up to this second), grows as big as the mecha, and we have a 1-on-1 fight. And then we continue to somewhere.

Dunno, maybe I didn't pay close enough attention, but this really felt like "we want to throw in cool stuff, but have no idea how to have it make sense, so we'll just do whatever". If it was communicated, it was done badly, and even if it hadn't been, it just doesn't fit in the situation.

To end on a positive note, the artstyle is great. This is very well done pixel art, and the city feels very nicely cyberpunk dystopian. But even without the story getting nonsensical, they could have done more with this.

Yeah all the Beeps and Boops of the game are great, it’s just that they had *no idea* how to implement any of that into the story; it’s like playing the cliff notes version of an RPG.

I pretty much can't stand any of Zeboyd Games'... games, because of their writing. Even Cosmic Star Heroine, which is by all accounts their best game, never gave the impression their writing has ever improved. So as much as the premise for their newest game is great (Shakespeare magical girl RPG), I'm never going to play it.

Well I was enjoying Xenoblade Chronicles 2 up until chapter 7. Taking away a key component of your battle strategy, then tossing you into an inscrutable dungeon with constant enemy interruptions. Made it through that, but then punishing you for not faffing about with systems other games would treat as extraneous is beyond the pale. I already didn't like the generic anime villains and now this has done it. Fuck this game.

This el cheapo handheld (the Data Frog) seems to have a hate boner for anything created before the NES. Arcade games work, but the older titles generally don't. They're not included, and adding them to the user ROMs section of the SD card just means you're setting yourself up for disappointment. What this basically means is that if you want to play those arcade favorites from yesteryear, you're going to slum with home ports, many of which are decidedly less impressive than their arcade counterparts.

The software selection in general shows a lot of tunnel vision from the creators. It's NES, Super NES, three Game Boy systems, and the Genesis. It's unadvertised, but the system is also compatible with Master System games (but not Game Gear games, peculiarly). What you DON'T get are many systems that probably would have been a slam dunk for the Data Frog but were left off. No Atari, no ColecoVision, no Intellivision, not much of anything before the crash. And don't try installing a ColecoVision emulator FOR the Game Boy Advance as a workaround, because that ain't gonna fly either. The Data Frog knows all your dirty little tricks. If you want to play Terra Cresta, you're stuck with the color-deprived NES version. If you want to play an Atari game, you'd better hope it was ported to a system this thing actually supports. The sooner this thing gets a custom firmware that acknowledges video games existed before 1985, the better.

(Gallingly, there are MSX to Master System ports available, and even ColecoVision to Master System ports, but THESE won't work on the Data Frog, either. Its Genesis emulator runs Master System code too, but it does NOT support the SMS's legacy hardware. What this means is that while MSX to Master System ports will start, and even make sound, you get a black screen instead of graphics. Unless you're a dolphin and your skill at echolocation is unmatched, you won't be playing those games, either.)

I'm on the last stage of Tetris Effect Connected Journey mode. Its breaking my brain. I must have tried and failed 10+ times last night.

I will probably switch from Normal mode to Beginner mode just to see the ending.

I really like the music and visuals of the game. The level 10+ speeds I don't find fun. I find a single mistake quickly snow balls into a loss.

I will probably uninstall game once journey mode is done. I'm not finding the game to be as relaxing as I would like it to be.

I played GB Tetris a lot. I found GB Tetris to be much easier and more relaxing than Tetris Effect.

It took me a number of attempts on Normal mode to finish out that last stage and I barely got it. Seems like the kind of thing you'd get good at with practice but I don't care enough about Tetris to "git gud". Still a great game but not as chill as you might be lead to believe from the early stages.

Man, I don't know what it is but that game's pattern and stimuli gave me a panic attack when I tried to play it and then again when I watched my husband play. I have no idea what it is but something about the graphics and music is stressful and foreboding to me.

@ 4-So: You are right, I don't care enough about the game to get good at high speed Tetris! Too many other games to play. I beat the last Journey stage on beginner mode yesterday.

If someone were to pick this up I would advise them to play beginner mode and enjoy the Journey. Normal mode and Expert mode are there if Beginner is too easy. But I think GB Tetris (my point of reference) falls more in line with Beginner mode.

@ Violentvixen: There are definitely some creepy / otherworldly vibes in some of the stages. There is a stage with flames and chanting and some of the intentional emptiness that I find very off-putting.

However, the first stage with the underwater manta rays and fish is beautiful. Most of the vocal track stages I like a lot despite their difficulty.

I've never played Rez, but Tetris Effect has made me more curious about Rez and Enhance in general. (I don't think Humanity is my cup of tea.)

Cosmic Star Heroine continues to be frustratingly unaware of its potential. Yeah, I could stop playing it, but it is kinda fun to play, and I want to see what they keep using, while failing to reach its full potential.

Like, there is this Millenial Fair, an extremely clear reference to Chrono Trigger. Except that it has the same asthetic like the rest of the game. Everything is grimy, and grim, and colorless. Even the balloons, existing in three or four colors - the colors are all muted, all close to grey.

See, this could be a really cool place. One person there even says something about a parade, that hasn't been part of the fair for years. They could have used that so well. Give me more NPCs who talk about how this was great, once upon a time, when there was a park here, or something. Let a granny talk about how she has these great memories of the fair, how his was a family event, where she got to know her first love. With it now being full of drunks, only used as a means to get some money from people, basing everything on nostalgia. How it is now visited by drunks and drug addicts, left alone by the state.

Also, is there a state? All I know about is this super-powerful corporation. They were even too lazy to tell the player about this. I guess the corporation is all-powerful, but come on.

Anyway, back to the fair. It's such a great opportunity, and they don't use it. It works even extra-textual, when you compare it to CTs Millenial Fair, where everything is pretty and green, and families have just fun there. And yeah, they copied everything. Looks very similar, you have some stands, you have some games, and you can beat an enemy. You can play around. But they didn't think for a second what it might mean, to the people, to the world. It's just a gameplay thing from Chrono Trigger that people remember, and it might be fun to have, so it is included here. It's just so frustrating, because it would have been so easy to get so, so much more out of it.

I reached the second planet by now, and, surprise, it is an equally ugly shithole as the first planet. And yeah, I get it, but also, they aren't doing anything with the grimness, aside from letting it be grim. The whole universe sucks. Because having it suck is cool, I guess.

I swear, I do get some joy out of this game. It's just - it looks so good, and cyberpunk RPGs are so rare, that it is frustrating that the setting is really nothing but window dressing. It's a dystopia, because it is a cyberpunk universe. It's such a shame.
