This video entered my life today and I'm mad... enjoy. Sonic fans maybe already saw it? Likely? I dunno. My primary experience with the franchise is just consuming content fans create and that is more than diverting enough for me.

Super Eyepatch Wolf does great videos, and that's a good one! Even after watching it I'm not sure I get the Sonic fandom though...

Cybershell's content over the past few months has been utterly fantastic. Wild to see him return so well after disappearing years back. Absolutely loved the Chao video and watched the entirety of it in a single sitting, which isn't what I had expected to do going in.

I thought I knew a lot about the Chao garden prior to this, but I'm really surprised by how wrong I was.

There’s been a big exodus of talent recently. The voices of Sonic, Amy, and Tails all won’t be in the Netflix show, and a couple of major writers left. The voice of Eggman is staying on, though, so it may be a coincidence rather than Sega wiping the slate clean.

I hope we get some announcements soon about whatever games they’re rushing to get out in time for the 30th anniversary. I’ve been jonesin’ since Forces.

The Sonic games I have the greatest appetite for re-playing are the Advance games. I’ve bought and played the original trilogy on the Genesis, DS, XBox 360, and 3DS. Enough already!

did i do all of that?

I wouldn't mind a collection of the 8-bit games, too, as I don't have a ton of experience with them. I've been playing a bit of Triple Trouble lately and have been really enjoying it.

The portable stuff really needs a re-release. While I'm not about to say no to a new port (or better still, a Taxman/Stealth remake) of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it's the MS/GG, GBA, and DS games I'm the most interested in.

Oh, and don't sleep on 3DS Generations, that one is good, too.

A collection of the Advance games could also include Sonic Battle, which would be a weird and fun addition.
Extra points for an original Chao garden game.

Pollock was the only one to survive the last time they jettisoned the entire voice cast too, I suspect he's the only one they have no intention of replacing.

Mike Pollock has been THE VOICE of Robotnik for so long that it's basically impossible to even imagine anyone else playing him.

Don't know about this time, but during previous cullings, he's said he had to audition again.

That's the thing. When Sega does these casting culls, Pollock is the one most who's most willing to (and knows how to) jump through whatever hoops are necessary to keep his job. Dude is really committed to voicing Dr. Eggman.

So no ones posted how Mr. Needlemouse was never intended as Sonics name.

It's one of those things that's fairly straightforward if you know a little Japanese, or have ever seen one of these image macros that call raccoons "washing bears" or lobsters "dragon shrimp"

I am returning to Chao Adventure. Got a big ol' pack of 2032s to Costco and decided to put them to use.

There is very little here you can't do just with, say, the dream explorer vmu emulator, admittedly, but you can't do mating across multiple VMUs. Even VMU emulators frequently struggle with this (though I admit that I did *not* try to do a link on the same machine in something like Elysian VMU, which might have worked if I put in the network IP for the computer I was playing on as the one to connect to?).

As for the mating, I was curious about the offspring of the special chao and what they look like. I am able to confirm that the black + gold and black + silver chao can produce special-color offspring unique from the VMU. Silver + black gets you an onyx (shiny black) chao, and gold and black gets you a copper (some documentation calls it 'patina' which is maybe correct given how dark brown this chao is). Any special chao has a chance of producing their own color offspring through the VMU in general, but those are the only ways to get those two colors. Gold + silver together do not appear to produce special offspring, and the documentation only accounts for those 5 different colors (gold, silver, black, onyx, copper), with a couple special colored jewel tones mentioned in documentation encoded differently and almost certainly intended for distribution with the (never actually properly implemented) online black market feature (shiny purple, green, red, and blue colors specifically).

Something else I have learned from this is that the game does not progress at all when the VMU is asleep. As a result, unless you're specifically going for those two unique chao, there's nothing particularly notable about the game after your first couple playthroughs (and because neither Amy nor Gamma are particularly useful characters to encounter during the adventure, many of the path branches aren't very useful). Hence why I think dream explorer's VMU emulator is a perfectly fine way to play (you can still play on the VMU screen, but now you have bigger buttons -- and also don't need to worry about battery life), and at the end of a session it saves your play data so you can resume at a later session (or if you put batteries back into it).

Beyond that, I think once you've had the experience of messing around with Chao Adventure, it's hard not to prefer to just load up Tyro's chao editor VMU program and mess around with things that way, since the game is so samey. The whole reason to play this is that it's a safer (chao HP loss doesn't lead to immediate death like in the gardens) and faster (since you can incredibly easily get stat-boost fruit from the matching games -- expect to gain like 300 points in each stat by the end of the game) way to boost your chao, and your chao doesn't age in the VMU (having played SADX's PC port before SA1, I'm astounded how quickly chao age in the original).

This appears to be tied to official features in the system: when a low-battery state is detected, the system bios runs a routine to save state of the VMU (RAM and registers), based on some official VMU development docs. Curious why VMU programs don't actually make intermediate progress saves, that documentation had another great piece of information suggesting that it would be a foolish decision: writing to the VMU flash RAM requires switching to a unique clock and takes something like 25 times the normal battery life. Data exchanges (like chao mating, presumably) are even worse, especially for transferrring save data (which, since they're both my VMU, I'll just use the Dreamcast to handle, thanks).

I saw him tweet about a sonic movie 2 trailer, which maybe that was someone not understanding what the teaser-with-the-weird-rune thing is. Like aside from the Sonic design being more traditional if you told me that was the way it is because it's specifically a movie tie-in I would absolutely believe that no-question, especially since it seems to treat Sonic like a lightning elemental.

Supposedly Sonic 3 and Knuckles will be wide-screen, so probably a Taxman joint. Personally I hope it gets the original tracks as Icecap Zone is the best.

Sonic Colours Ultimate is pretty cool as that game was basically Very Good but extremely hamstrung by being on Wii. Not shitting on the Wii, I adore that thing, but it didn't do Sonic Colours any favours with a poor framerate and muddy graphics.
