Yet it still managed to look gorgeous at the time.

If S3&K can't use the OST, I hope they get Tee Lopes or someone to do some fill-in music that slaps so hard that I'll forget the OG was ever there.

Well the spoilers were basically all lies

Not following, seeing as there have been people complaining about no surprises, which was due to half the stuff being leaked.

I hope if necessary they'll use the November '93 proto (PC) music, because it's by-and-large wonderful.

This will sound shitty, it's not supposed to, but I had been privy to a little leak that had some stuff that simply didn't materialise here (and some that did), so I'm wondering if the other things I've heard (which are pretty cool) are going to show up on the promised later "Sonic Centrals".

I wasn't as big on the prototype music, but it might have been a hardware thing.

And yeah, I'm hoping for much more to come... like an All-Stars Racing Remastered collection.

Man it was really hard to find any details about this! I pulled keywords from some of your posts and finally found a an article with a link to the stream.

That's a pile of random stuff, yep. Colors was great and has one of my favourite tracks in the series but I dunno if I want to replay it.

LIKE MY GENERAL ADDITUDE WAS "SURE I'LL GRAB IT BUT I REALLY DOUBT IT'LL BE A BETTER EXPERIENCE THAN JUST PLAYING SONIC CLASSIC HEROES OR SONIC 3 COMPLETE OR SONIC 3 A.I.R. BUT HOLY SHIT THIS ACTUALLY LOOKS REALLY FUCKING GOOD.

SONIC ORIGINS TRAILER JUST DROPPED AND... SHIT IT LOOKS REALY GOOD ACTUALLY.

LIKE, WAY BETTER THAN I EXPECTED.

Amy wasn't in those games though, right? Or am I forgetting something? It'd be cool if she was a secret character.

I'm intrigued, there are like 8 billion ports of these games around but this definitely looks like a nice version of them all and I do love me some animation. I think for me I'll wait for more detail on just how much is remastered and added. Curious what the "Island Camera" feature is too.

3&K's slightly harder to come by, and it is by far the Best One & Knuckles*. But the nickel-and-diming over Genesis game is nonetheless really unappealing.

*subject to preference, I guess

Yeah, the sheer volume of alternative ways to play Sonics 1 through 3&K even if you don't root around on ROM sites and fuck around with emulator plugins makes this super agressive stance even weirder.

I was really impressed by the footage of the Remasters! That's a genuinely good preservation effort! I was more than happy to pay what I'd pay for a new Video game to enjoy what appears to be a really lovingly crafted rebuild!

AND THEN THEY WENT AND FUCKED IT ALL UP

It's like,

Okay.

You are selling gussied up versions of games that can be obtained on literally anything for 99 cents apiece. Less than that if they're bunded as part of one of the many, many Genesis collections. These games also happen to have a huge romhacking scene, meaning that arguably the BEST way to play them is to just download Sonic Classic Heroes or Sonic 3 Complete for zero dollars. But you are selling gussied up versions of them anyway.

You are selling these versions for 40 DOLLARS.

And amazingly you're probably gonna make BANK. Because people love these games and because a lot of your old fans are fucking batshit and a lot of your new fans want to catch up because they just saw a cute little movie.

You are literally in the best possible position to make a decent chunk of cash from what's probably not the most difficult source port ever done.

AND THEN YOU GO AND DO THIS

ZeDwapC.png

I seriously don't understand the logic here.

Like.

If someone's not going to balk at the idea of buying, and I must stress this, a pack of Four Sega Genesis Games for 40 FUCKING DOLLARS, they're probably willing to buy it at 45! Why not only sell the complete version at that price!

But no you went and did this completely incomprehensible nonsense. This Labyrinth of "features" that most reasonable humans would take for granted or not even notice if it wasn't there. Things like "A .png file that goes behind the game screen to fill the blank space on the sides of your TV." and "The Ability to fiddle with the camera in background of of the menu".

AND THEN THERE'S THIS

FbfuZNX.png

THE FUCK DOES THAT EVEN MEAN???

SONIC DOESN'T EVEN COLLECT COINS! THAT'S SOME MARIO SHIT.

WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU IDIOTS DONE

On the one hand the pricing between the normal and the ~digital deluxe~ version is no more than $5; on the other hand when your enhanced ports of Genesis games have release tiers like this... wtf are you doing. I have more questions than answers, though it does sound like the digital deluxe version (based on an image on the website showing music from Spinball) will contain more media than just the base 4 games, meaning that for the first time since like 1997 we'll have Namco Museum style presentations of the series' artifacts, a la Sonic Jam (though likely without the 3D bonus stage that Jam had, which I personally enjoyed even if it's a bit cumbersome and overall slight).

Either way I'm getting the complete edition, because I'm a dumb mark. And might get it for multiple platforms (PC and Switch) but certainly not at the same time.

Are those like the Christian Whitehead ports all compiled together?

That's my understanding, though it's likely they've gotten a third-party to actually assemble everything a la the port of mobile Sonic CD to other platforms. Headcannon (the dev studio by Stealth, the other guy who's responsible for building the RetroSonic engine these games run on) has confirmed their involvement in the game.

Guessing from the fact the compilation has coins, it most likely has some frivolous bullshit to spend them on. Backgrounds, character art, ???.

The question is how scarce they are and whether or not Sega is charging stupid amounts of real life money to more easily acquire lots of them.

Yeah, what I'm calling the museum content (and, apparently, the mirror mode) are the unlockable stuff (presumably this includes the non-DLC music). Not particularly surprising. Sounds like the preorder bonus just lets you have most of that stuff unlocked to begin with then.

It looks good, but I'll wait until the inevitable sale. Probably around $30 for the Deluxe Version.

I think $40 is incredibly fair for four ports made from the ground up with widescreen support and the added features of other ports. That’s $10 per game and each of these games is worth $10, even if you can get them cheaper elsewhere.

That tiered nonsense can go die in a fire, though.

I agree. If it's widescreen, gives you all the characters in all the games, and runs flawlessly, I will happily pay $40. Seems like there are some new movies and cut-scenes too if you want it.

Widescreen is a big step forward from a ROM dump in my book.

There is one segment of the trailer that says "Classic Modes and Anniversary." Am I supposed to know what "Anniversary" means?

I am also buying the most expensive version, but I'm all pissed off about it, and probably still gonna just use emulation more often.

Honestly if anything this will be the inciting moment that forces me to actually learn about ROM/Emulator hacks that make stuff like Widescreen possible on genesis games.

Sonic 3 AIR did some pretty insane shit if memory serves.

At least none of these tiered options involve NFTs.

Yet.

Anyways I like the first two games okay but I absolutely adore S3&K so I guess maybe I'll get this when it goes on sale at some point.

I like how they showcase the difference by associating "classic" with one of the most iconic scenes in the franchise, and "anniversary" with...is that a Sonic CD boss fight? Or something totally original? You would think if it was a difference in presentation, they'd use a setpiece more likely to be recognized so that viewers could spot the differences. If it's completely original content, I guess that's why I don't recognize it, but if that's the case, I'd feel like the trailer would want to hype up the fact they're including entirely new boss fights/zones a bit more clearly. That's a pretty big selling point!

Also: S3&K's only flaws are the electric shield being far worse and less consistent about protecting you from electricity than the fire and water shields are from their respective elements, the fact that Sonic and Tails don't get the full Launch Base experience in the combined game, and that the game occasionally forgets to cover up Robotnik with Egg Robo when playing as Knuckles. If this can resolve those things, I'll likely go for this despite the tiered nonsense.

My guess is that classic mode is much closer to 1:1 replication of the originals. Anniversary more in line with the remakes for mobile, though I would like to believe this means two acts of Hidden Palace as part of the regular zone order (no pit shenanigans) and maybe even Flying Battery showing up after Carnival Night in S3K; I expect several Sonic Jam esque layout tweaks (including the accommodations to Tails and Knuckles in 1 and 2)
