Gonna Tokon for a Ride: Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Here comes a 4v4 Marvel fighting game from the folks behind Guilty Gear and, I don't know, a whole lot of other fighting games.

Ms. Marvel is part of the launch lineup here, so I am hyped.

My understanding is it means "Fighting Spirits", which is essentially the subtitle, haha.

Looks really, really slick. I'm stoked for this to be good - we could use a great MvC-like after the last few whiffs.

the extent to which i'm likely to be wanting to give any money to disney and by extension marvel media in the current timeframe aside...well, i wouldn't think this is a common opinion, but there's also no way i'm the only fighting game player for whom the 1994-2011 capcom depictions of characters is by far their favorite. and there's absolutely a chance that arc system works can bring something comparable to the table, since it's obvious from the trailer that the mvci mistake isn't being made again and the characters aren't locked into being "the movie versions" or anything. but i think it's a big hill to climb for me.

also this is way deeper in the weeds but i hope that the hitstop effects are being greatly exaggerated for visual clarity in a trailer. hahahahaha

That sure is the most sentai-ass Iron Man armor I’ve ever seen. (Not a complaint, mind you.) And yeah, very cool that MsMarvel is starting lineup.

IIRC from the Arc interviews, that their studio was approached for this game.

Its wild to me that Sony went to Arc to create this game.

I assume Sony could have just as easily gone to CAPCOM with money and EVO and said lets do MvC4. Maybe Disney would prefer to have a game of Marvel only fighters. But CAPCOM wouldn't have done that also?

Is Arc more trusted than CAPCOM to deliver a great fighting game?

CAPCOM is a on roll at the moment. Maybe MH Wilds wasn't the follow up that most thought it would be. But it seems like every game CAPCOM makes sells millions of copies. Outside of Nintendo, they seem like one of the safest developers in terms of making a game that sells copies.

Its not my biggest game of the show. But I can see how Marvel Token would be insane if your plugged into the FGC.

there's a lot of speculation that capcom internally doesn't want to have another active fighting game series, and in the most direct sense i think that's not totally shocking (you can't put SF6 resources in another series and expect to get SF6 numbers, just like how soul calibur has become a much lower-key series than tekken). i don't know that that means they rejected working on a project like this, because i think it's also obvious why anyone would approach arc for fighting games—they are...ideologically dedicated to the genre, i think more than any other major company. they will make a game, they will publish a game, they have the tools and expertise to make a game that looks like, well, this. which isn't my favorite ASW art style and presentation, but i do think it's a solid midpoint between "appealing to me" and "what the mainstream wants games to look like" haha

I still think its wild that instead of getting CAPCOM to do MvC4 we get Arc to do essentially MvC4 (they even have 4 players on the team. That's not a coincidence right? Also Fantastic Four team?).

You may be right. It may be that CAPCOM wants to devote time and energy to SF. Its their big fighting game property and they own the IP.

The thing to remember is Sony is bankrolling this first and foremost, so any ArcSys cameos are likely not happening. I suspect it was easier to approach ArcSys to take on this project than Capcom since ArcSys does a lot of contracting work and Capcom does not.

The Fantastic 4 themselves have not been in a fighter, but Super-Skrull represented them in a way in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.

This, along with FFT, was the standout of the show for me. Made me wish I had a PS5 for a short while.

Have they ever appeared in a fighting game?
The Fantastic Four have not been in a fighting game to my knowledge.

It would be cool if they were in the 4-man roster game.

I suppose Arc would have to do something to nerf Sue. On paper that power seems pretty good in a fighting game.

guilty gear's chipp has temporary invisibility in games before strive. it's definitely a strong ability when you can get it off safely but it's not outrageously powerful...there are still animations that reveal things about what you're doing. not to mention that for the chipp player, they also have to get used to not seeing their character

Human Torch and Thing were in Marvel: Rise of the Imperfects.

Anyway, this... is intriguing. Undecided on how I feel about the new Iron Man armor. I kinda like it, but at the same time, something about it just feels... un-Stark-like.

I don't really follow your perspective here? You have trust issues because of MvCI, but that was made by an entirely different creative team? They're completely different situations? If you're worried Marvel/Disney is going to be overly meddling in the art department, despite everything in the trailer pointing towards the opposite and need reassurances that won't be the case, you should hop genres and observe what Marvel/Disney is currently allowing over in Marvel Rivals. Where they're just letting that Chinese studio do whatever the fuck they want in the character design department. I'm not really worried personally. ArcSys has a pretty impeachable record at this point, and they were brought onto this project because of that record. I think the trailer speaks for itself that they're being allowed to do what they want vs make the character designs too much like the movies. And again, Rivals has proven that brand confusion isn't really an issue or an obstacle to these things making all of the money

Yeah, Capcom is growing into quite a behemoth in recent years. IMO they're well beyond being someone else's outsourcing, and it only makes sense to focus their investment money/talent on projects where they get to keep all of the profit instead of having to pay expensive licensing fees/revenue sharing. And a new MvC game would not only be a drain on company resources for a game they don't get to keep all of the profits for, but also potentially cannibalize their own audience for SF6

i'm a lot less excited for this game than i would be by a game that was more like a proper sequel to mvc3, because i like the way the characters look and the moves they have in games between cota and marvel 3. infinite already wasn't that sequel and this looks easily better than that. but i'm still not expecting to like these versions of returning characters more. i think there's a lot of room for them to impress me but i also think that something i like as much as capcom's x-men is a very high bar

What's sad to me is that their size seems directly inversely proportionate to their output.

Which is a fancy way of saying "I miss '90s Capcom." At least they're keeping some of that stuff alive with collections, and honestly, as long as they keep it going, I'm mostly content with that.

Also, as I said on Bluesky, I guess this became relevant again...
