Masaya's 1992 Mega Drive horizontal STG cult classic Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer has been picked up for a revival, courtesy of independent developer Nalua Studio. They specialize in native Neo Geo projects, which is also the target platform and baseline here, though less niche--and digital--platforms will also be supported. The premise given is that this is not a port of any kind but an unique, reimagined version of the game utilizing the same concepts and swerving into its own direction from there. On a basic level, the original is known for its more-prominent-than-usual narrative cinematics (producer Toshihiro Tsuchida went on to create Front Mission and Arc the Lad later on), standout music (Noriyuki Iwadare and others), configurable multi-directional weaponry, and a general fast pace, for projectiles if not so much for scrolling. From this initial glimpse they're certainly emphasizing the presentational aspects, but who knows about the mechanical nuances; bullet speed seems a little slower compared to the original. Still, the project is conceptually interesting and a welcome use of a legacy property, so it'll be something to follow. Gley Lancer in its original form has been available for some years now, published by Ratalaika, so there isn't an issue of a remake replacing the original in this instance.
