This was/is an amazing thread, and my only complaint is that (unless I missed it), there was not a lengthy treatise on Doctor Bong.

I apparently missed Doctor Bong! (That's what I get for not reading Howard the Duck.) I don't have a definitive answer for you, though, because Lester Verde has an...interesting history. He was a journalism student who became a music reporter and then a musician, but then reappeared years later as a mad scientist with crazy muscles and crazier gadgets. It was kinda Step 1. Journalism degree, Step 2. ???, Step 3. Supervillain. Could he have gotten a doctorate in the interim? Sure. Did he? We have no idea.

If memory serves, I don't think he was "actually" a musician, as he was basically doing "deep undercover journalism" to expose the recklessness and deep hedonism of a particular band. That adventure ended when, in a night of very confusing debauchery, he lost a hand to a mini, "prop" guillotine. That is the origin point for his general insanity.

And then, yeah, it's "step 2 ????" and he's a brilliant geneticist. For any other doctor villain, I would assume that meant he went back to school after the accident. But he is a Gerber baby, so it is entirely possible he got his advanced knowledge from, like, a radioactive textbook. It could happen!
