Gaming Facts

Ico was originally meant to wear a fake moustache and glasses, as a disguise. However, Fumito Ueda was worried that people would confuse the game with Luigi's Mansion, which also featured a moustachioed protagonist, so he turned the moustache into horns. This caused people to think they were buying Devil May Cry, so Ueda never made another game, letting his evil twin produce Shadow of the Colossus while pretending to be him. Ironically, the twin was wearing a fake moustache and glasses during production.

Metroid CAN crawl, actually. ...look, you try crawling around in bulky, heavy and pokey space armor on wet cave floors. You'd wait for a morph ball powerup too.

The original title Wizardry was "Kevin Keegan's PK Shoot-Out Challenge". The title was changed but the gameplay remained exactly the same, true to Keegan's experiences in Hamburger SV.

As everybody knows, people outside of Japan didn't get the original Super Mario Bros 2. Legend tells us that Howard Fils-Aime took one look at the original SMB2, and decided that its new art style, multiple player characters, terrifying masked enemies, and amphibious villain would be too much for the American gaming public to take in at once, and so passed on localizing it. It was eventually released overseas with some minor adjustments under the title of "Super Mario Japan" as a pack-in title for the toploader NES in 1992. The title we remember as Super Mario Bros 2 was actually an unrelated game that was originally released in Japan under the title "Clu Clu Land."

The original Persona video game, which was later retooled into a Shin Megami Tensei spinoff, really was intended to be "Persona: The Game" to capitalize on the popularity of Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece. However, the license was pulled and the entire game had to be rewritten from scratch when Bergman caught wind that Alma and Elisabet's final confrontation involved Jack Frost.

As its name implies, Jumping Flash is a photography-platforming game. Shigeru Miyamoto is reported to have seen this and decided that the game would have been better without jumping. This is how we got Pokemon Snap.

The Castlevania series was brought to an abrupt end when Universal Studios sued Konami for copyright infringement.

They have since made up and are working to open a new theme park together, Super Pachinko World.

The reason Star Fox has so many arches you fly under is because of Miyamoto's experience driving under so many freeway overpasses while on a trip in America.

I didn't realize Sonic the Hedgehog was officially banned in flyover country, I thought it was that he was given the cold shoulder there on account of their red-state Conservative values and Sonic's devout Muslim faith. After that one Ramadan where Sonic's catchphrase became really widespread it's been tough for him to find work.

Oh! Now I remember why Sega has never done a promotional tie-in with Sonic Drive-In. It's because they refuse to serve chili dogs that are Halal certified.

Slightly incorrect, Met is short for Da Mets. Samus's obsession with round things in the original manga is a reference to her creator's obsession with baseballs. In fact, Metroid is set in the Ultra Machine universe.

The appearance of the protagonist for Naughty Dog's The Last of Us was determined by a company-wide raffle to determine who in the event of a fungal zombie apocalypse would be the last one standing; hence, the game being named "the last of us."

The game Final Fantasy was named such because some developers at Square, a marvelously successful company at the time, wanted to retire. They thought that the best way to do this would be to make the biggest worst game they could possibly make --- a game so bad that its failure would force the entire team into a permanent retirement. Unfortunately for them, the game was so successful that they were forced to make a sequel. Every subsequent title in the franchise was made with the selfsame ambition and yet somehow was always met with the same failure to fail. Maybe one day they will succeed in failing, and we will finally see the true Final Fantasy.

Bloodborne was originally meant to be From's first foray into pinball machines, but when Miyazaki accidentally spilled his spaghetti on the prototype, he took it as a sign that his true dream of being the greatest pinball developer of all time was never meant to be. This is why if you lose to the Abyss Watchers 666 times in a row you fight the devil from Devil's Crush instead.

While playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES, if you plug a controller into port 2 a second player can control the goombas.
