Football 2022: Time Makes Fools of Us All

I know pro sports is a mercenary business, but I'm pretty busted up by the Russell Wilson trade. It's made even worse by being a mystifyingly bad deal for Seattle. I think that I would like Pete Carroll and John Schneider replaced.

I'll be devil's advocate, I think it's not so bad. It's weird because it's not quite rebuilding, and definitely not enough to support a team that is already competing, but there's potential. They have a good cap situation, and a ton of support, so they sure up their line and add pass rush then they're still good. Luck is just not good, a lot of it is decision making, but some better coaching and a new cast has been enough to turn average qbs into useful qbs and super bowl winners. I generally depress the impact of qbs, and wilson was one of the few that definitely does have a big individual impact, but I'll be bullish unless they start trying to flip more into a rebuild direction. NFC is wide open though, maybe they'll turn around and deal for another qb

Issue was I'm not sure Seattle really had a lot of leverage. Wilson wanted out and had a no-trade clause in his contract meaning he could reject going to any team he didn't want to go. Plus it's a lot of money that Denver has to pay.

The Deshaun Watson to the Seahawks rumors are making me feel physically ill. I would like to be able to watch and root for my team this year please.

Brady is coming back so between that and the Seahawks probably sucking this year, maybe I just skip this season.

I like that the idea is that the Browns are such a nothing of a team that the resulting game will be a literal bloodbath. I also appreciate that the corresponding reference to 'nice boat' is oblique

I love that Broncos @ Seahawks is the Week 1 MNF game. I am not being facetious either, this is legit exciting.

Secretaries of State don't have a lot of opportunities to do war crimes, but they do lend their clout to legitimize war criminals. Seems like the same thing in spirit that fat cat Republican donors do, just with different tools at their disposal.

Oops I'm in three fantasy leagues this year. I look forward to not remembering who I have in any of them. Also glad all of my friends are cheap like me, I hear about some friend groups doing $50-$100 buy-ins and that's insane to me.

I'm in two, a free family league in its second year that I'm happy I set up because it's a fun way for my extended family to interact, and a league I barely am associated with (I knew one person who invited me, then I invited a second person in, and then the first person left the league) which is a $50 league where many of the other members are knowingly and happily incompetent. It's a weird feeling, but hey, I end up making money most of the time but the top of the league is still competitive, so hey!

I don't have a great feeling about this Thursday night for my Bills, but I do think this year is going to be a good one. Let's go Buffalo!

$50-100 is kinda nothing tbh. $50 doesn't even buy you a brand new video game anymore. Meanwhile it gives you what, 18 weeks of enjoyment? It's very easy to rationalize in that way in terms of the ratio of the cost to the duration of enjoyment you get out of it. Meanwhile, I've frequently had the problem in the past where I've had fantasy leagues where a few or several players just completely check out and become disinterested partway through the season and can't even be bothered to set their lineups. And that's a real frustrating situation because it completely skews the results and can give a team on the cusp of making your league's playoffs a boost or punishment depending on how the schedule works out. Giving those potential kinds of players more 'skin in the game' generally keeps them pot-invested and paying attention longer. I definitely empathize with not wanting to spend very much if any money on fantasy sports though, but I understand how easy it is to rationalize it to yourself outside of the typical degenerate gambling tendencies.

Sadly living in a rural area means lower income which makes that hard to afford. One friend league just upped to $30 this year and we lost several people because of it. Our entertainment budget for the entire month is typically $25, and the majority of stuff we buy is through coupons or survey rewards. I do get what you're saying, but even a $20 entry fee has prevented my husband from playing for years, it's just too much for us both to play. We made it our social budget this year since we're not doing social things anyway which is nice.

Pre-COVID and online drafts the league rule was that last place had to pay for the pizza and beer at next year's draft which usually kept people from completely checking out thankfully!

I think, just maybe, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are going to be able to over come the loss of Tyreek Hill.

Vikes spanked the packers, I’ll take it. This Justin Jefferson kid is all right.

Rematch in January in Green Bay is unlikely to go as well.

That might be the worst 2 minute drill I've ever seen. Except it was 4 minutes.

Geno Smith looked pretty good, at least in the first half. I haven't watched a lot of Seattle games over the last few years, so when people told me that their line sucked and Wilson was the only thing keeping them in games, I believed them. Watching that game, Russ seemed scared of a clean pocket. He was so worried about pressure that did not seem to be there that he missed making quite a few plays.

The line was typically bad during Wilson's time here, but many of Wilson's sacks as a Seahawk, especially in more recent years, can also be attributed (if only in part) to Wilson simply holding onto the ball too long. There have been plenty of times where he had time in the pocket, but didn't have an open receiver and so instead of running for it or throwing it away, he simply tried to extend the play and it didn't work out.

So it was pretty clear from the live commentary that no one really knew what they were looking at, but seeing Tua Tagovailoa's hands showing significant neural issues after he hit his head was absolutely terrifying.

He was just discharged from the hospital which is wonderful to hear, but between what was shown onscreen and comments like the coach saying he didn't sound like the same person right after it happened this is really disturbing. I hope he fully recovers.

It's week 4 and the Colts, 49ers and Dolphins have had serious QB injures. This seems far worse than usual. Will the NFL finally recognize that they are destroying people? Probably not, but I feel like there is far more intense conversation about it especially with Tagovailoa just being screened last week.

They need to. What happened to Tua was heinous. Safety seems to have come a bit of a ways but there's so much more necessary.

EDIT: To be clear, at the very least, he shouldn't have played both the second half of last game and Thursday's game as well. Pretty stupid that the regulations didn't make it clear that he should not be allowed to play.

Everyone involved should lose their jobs. Coaches, trainers, doctors, etc. The team should lose picks, and the owner should be forced out of the league. There's no way he should have cleared the league's concussion protocols to even play in the game after his concussion on Sunday to begin with. And now the guy likely has permanent brain damage as a result. I'm livid. Burn the NFL to the ground.

Yeah, we have an Amazon Prime trial right now for some reason, and while I was of course going to cancel it anyway I'll add a comment when I do saying Thursday Night Football is evil. Not that it will go anywhere or matter but at least I'll feel like I'm doing something.
