Florence Welch is a Goddamn Icon and It's Time to Acknowledge That

Autumn de Wilde, the director of the video, also directed the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, which is also fantastic. De Wilde directed a video for another new track from Florence that you can see here, and it looks like there's a third one coming in about 12 hours. I wonder if this means we'll be seeing a new album soon.

Anyway, I think this is my favorite song of hers:

So, the possible new album's been out for a few weeks now. I really like it, though it's clearly music that comes out of a lot of pain. After High As Hope, when Florence seemed to be figuring some things out in her life and maybe arriving at a better place, it's a little jarring to hear Dance Fever, which seems to have so much in common thematically with Lungs and Ceremonials. Florence says pretty much explicitly in the lyrics that music is her main way of dealing with painful emotions, so I realize that she's probably just working things out by putting them into songs, but still, I hope she's OK.

I keep forgetting to mention here that I actually got to see Florence + The Machine back at the beginning of October, and that was easily the best show I've ever been to. I still don't have all the words to describe it. Just go see her if you get the chance.

Are there particular songs from the setlist that stick with you, or was it just everything?

Her performances of Dream Girl Evil and Girls Against God were spellbinding. Dog Days was, of course, great to see live. She performed Never Let Me Go for the first time in over a decade because she'd managed to finally work through some of the unpleasant memories associated with that song. The last two encore songs were Shake It Out (her best song, IMO and an absolute religious experience to see live) and Rabbit Heart, which was a hell of a way to close the show. Her energy, stage presence and crowd engagement are absolutely off the charts.

So yeah, there were standout moments, but the whole thing, from when she walked out on stage to when we all filed out of the arena was magic.
