Now, Vagrant Story in particular is one of my favourite games in the world, but it and Matsuno's other writing in particular always leave me cold--you guessed it--in the treatment of women and what roles they're allowed to have, so I'm hoping the starry-eyed emulation only goes so far in that respect.
I know other FFXIV fans are holding out hope that the writers borrowed from that team will end up being respectful towards the female characters in this game, but I'm still being cautiously optimistic and I'm not taking it as a given by any means. I simply still need to see more of the story and its characters before I'd feel comfortable having that expectation.

If they're taking inspiration from Vagrant Story, I sure do hope they remember the most important thing: Male protagonist with visible buttcheeks.

Going over the tidbits of plot hinted at in the trailer, I'm getting a distinct impression of a Tactics-like scenario where the rich, privileged blond kid and his dark-haired (unless customizable) commoner best friend grow up together until a personal tragedy, instigated by war, puts them on opposite sides of the conflict.

Only this time it's Delita who becomes a mercenary, and whose story we're following.

Stands to reason they will be the one wearing the buttpants.

Regardless, I’m going to predict that FFXVI will be the first FF in a very long time to be released without delays or going over budget.

I don't always like some of the stylistic choices in FF14, and the melodrama can get tiresome, but Yoshi P is one of the best stewards of the series for sure.

the downside of there being so god damn many retrospective "shadowbringers.......good" articles out there is that i can't find the one that really goes into the comments of the dev team and explains how the culture there being good as a result of yoshi-p's management directly caused shadowbringers to be so good creatively, with a high degree of trust between the lead creative minds that balanced encouragement to advocate for things they thought would work out well with pragmatic editing and acceptance of critique where necessary

but mostly the first one bc a couple of instances of "no, guys, trust me on this" mostly from ishikawa and i think one major one from soken gave us the best shit in this game

Yoship’s management lead has made one of the most tight-knit and highest morales of among videogames.

It’s something because much of the dev team were from 1.0 too, and yeah. The team is cohesive not only in work ethic but also in terms of organization.

It’s why FFXIV content has only been delayed in two cases: 1) patch 3.1 was delayed a month because the developers needed a holiday after finishing their first expansion, Heavensward and 2) patch 5.3 by two months (and 5.35 for two weeks) were delayed due to the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic.

That’s it in seven years runtime of ARR and onwards.

I’m serious when I say that FFXVI will come not only on time, but also at budget.

I'm imagining FF7R part 2 limping out the door shortly before Yoshi-P's FF17 is released to universal fanfare after 16 is well-received, and Nomura toiling away at FF7R3 alone in a dark room as FFXX is hailed as an ingenious reimagining/love letter for the classic series

I have no beef with 7R or particular love for 14 (haven't played either) or Yoshi-P. I just think that would be funny. (Also that it would be much better for the series than Nomura's somewhat disastrous stewardship has been.)

Upper management sat on the announcement for years, the first time they've done that for a mainline FF game in literal decades outside FFXIV 1.0, it'd be... at best very concerning if they couldn't make a real time trailer. This isn't a knock so much as "AAA games announced right as they leave pre-production are not prone to coming out sooner than 4 years after announcement"

I mean, when the executive producer breaks with nearly two decades of S-E tradition to focus on the production instead of doing jazzy announcements to build hype that can only be a positive sign. *gazes in Nomura's direction*

And like, I get it for the non-XIV fans and stans in the audience, but Yoshida's been delivering quality product on time, on budget, and with minimal internal issues for nearly eight years. Product that both fits neatly within the FF theme park concept he put together for XIV 2.0 and as a standalone FF title. It's just darkly and ironically funny to see a lot of self-described series fans lament the loss of that snazzy CGI trailer announcing something that won't exist for a decade in favor of seeing a rough cut of actual game that is way closer to release than I would've guessed.

for TGS, yoshi-p did one of his FFXIV stream-n-chats, and it's mostly stuff about the ffxiv/nier crossover raid + vicious banter w yoko taro (spoilers for shadowbringers content) but there was also a bit of FFXVI chatter.

one part was the quoted bit from the tweet above, but also a bit more detail about promo material plans:
Yoko Taro: "So today with this show about XIV, Saito Yosuke and Yoko Taro, the two of us are here, and so two is added onto the number fourteen..."
Saito: "SIXTEEN!? SIXTEEEN!? Reaaally?"
Yoko Taro: "So we are changing the program today to a exclusive special...!"
Saito: "I heard there's a new trailer."
Yoshida: "Doesn't exist!"
Yoko Taro: "And new gameplay!?"
Yoshida goes onto say that he wants to focus on development until next year, even though he jokingly says he feels the intense heat from Yoko Taro, to not expect trailers/teasers or more into until 2021.
Current plans are to make a teaser site with basic things like characters or the world there, at the end of October, as there is no real site yet.

Saito, jokingly: "That won't be forgiven (by the fans)."
He says the current trailer mostly shows rendered cutscenes, so he wants the next trailer to feature actual gameplay as much as possible. He acknowledges that a trailer with just renders worries fans, Yoshida bringing up that he saw comments like "See you in 2035," [throwing shade at N****a] in America, so that's how they decided what to put in the current trailer. Yoshida says at this point, they haven't still optimized or fine tuned many things so the gameplay isn't exactly ready yet and in a tight spot especially when compared to titles releasing soon. He also says because of this, the trailer is missing its the most attractive features about the game so he wants to properly make a good trailer before releasing it.
Yoshida, jokingly: "Would that be okay, CEO Saito-san...?"
Saito: "...Where is Hiroshi Takai (XVI director) today?"
Yoshida, laughing: "This is a show about XIV."

so the tweet quote might have been a little bit misleading; they put a certain amount of gameplay in this trailer for the quoted reason, but he still wants to make a better trailer that reflects the final gameplay product

dang that's wild, it turns it's better to announce a game once you have a game to announce than it is to throw together a trailer of things you think are cool and say you're making that game

Just to keep things balanced, tomorrow they should announce the start of production of Toriyama's Final Versus Fantasy XVI.

Again, FFXIV has only ever had two delays: the first major patch after Heavensward was released (and that was also their first expac), and then the 4 month delay for 5.3.

The former was to give the team a month's holiday cos they worked so hard, and the second was due to COVID-19. The only two delays in seven years.

FFXVI is gonna be on time and I wants it badly.
