Final Fantasy Tactics ReWhatever Is A Real Thing

My Final Fantasy Advance extra content story:

For downloading the FF Portal app on my phone during its launch, I got a free version of the Android port of FF1 (and 2, later). It was based on the Advance version, but the extra dungeons were clumsily cut out. (Like, you know when you beat a Fiend, there was a short cutscene of an extra dungeon appearing? The Android version just fades to black for five seconds. Hilariously clumsy.)

However, all the other changes they made are still in the game-- including a rare chance for enemies to drop items. Now, the Advance version had added a bunch of new items that were mostly only found in the extra dungeons. Mostly, except for some very rare enemy drops.

One time, I beat Kraken and he dropped the Deathbringer Sword.

If you know FF1, there is a very small amount of good endgame equipment. There's the Masamune and Excalibur, of course, and if you are a brave soul you can end up with two Katanas. So if you don't have a precise number of Knights and Ninjas, some of your dudes are rocking god-killing blades and some are stuck with the Sun Sword or Defender.

Or, in this case, you can have a Red Mage as an avatar of death itself on the battlefield.

I am going to play it on something but am going to wait for review to decide if it's Steam, Switch or Xbox. Switch is my preferred one and I feel like it can handle it, but I want to wait to confirm that. Also I might wait a bit to see if it seems like it'll come out on Gamepass.

Steam is my only option.

The deluxe version DLC sounds interesting and helpful if not necessarily game-breaking. The pre-order bonus seems kind of meh to me but it doesn't really cost any extra (other than having to commit early).

Getting it for Switch since the S2 upgrade is free. It'll be my first time really giving the original a go, so I'm kinda excited.

A remaster of Xenogears would be great. And it should stay exactly as it was, including disk 2. It's absolutely perfect, in all its messy, messy glory.

Oh, right, this is about FFT. Played it one year ago, the first time I made it past chapter 1, and it is amazing. Wasn't too much into the gameplay itself, as tactics games aren't my preference (though it needs to be one, to work as well as it does), and it got too hard for me. But the story, the characters, the setting. It's awesome, and I think it stays awesome until the very end.

Also, I love Agrias. Let me just say, when Cid joined, I took his sword and gave it to her. And was glorious.
I have to say, that is glorious. Though in the WotL version maybe a little redundant with the Agrias' Birthday perfume accessory which is also absurd.

I'll be picking it up on PS5.

Kinda torn. Final Fantasy has always felt like a PlayStation franchise. I don't particularly care about the portability aspect of the Switch 2, but it should look pretty good. PC version will load the fastest and look the best for me, but I also won't be able to get the game physically that way. Choices, choices.

I've never been a huge FFT fan and the furthest I've been in the game is probably halfway (based on the walkthrough I was using at the time). It's been well over a decade since I last played it, more than enough time to give it another college try.

I'm picking it up on PS5 just because that's my default and go-to if something is multi-platform. Also, I can get it on physical. Huge bonus.

So people have been posting their reviews and impressions of this. Going by what I've gathered, it seems like a fairly good remaster on its own merits, yet one that hews a bit too close to its source material and so is disappointing for those hoping for substantial gameplay and mechanical improvements, which this game was certainly in need of, imo. That being said, they do seem to have nailed the voice acting and the general presentation, and have also included some handy aids to make the story easier to follow, so it certainly delivers on that front.

Put about two hours into this today since my copy came early. I have almost no engagement with the prior versions but it feels like Final Fantasy Tactics, which is appropriate since it is.

Voice acting is pretty good and I've already become a fast-forward enjoyer.

Moving conversation here.

I now have Cloud in my party. It's the same voice actor as Remake/Rebirth.

What a game.

He starts at your party level now, with a bunch of job levels in other classes unlocked (down to Samurai -- he has Blade Grasp/Shirahadori by default). Very little JP in his base job, though. I think only Cross Slash was unlocked for me. He also comes with the Materia Blade now.

Kinda surprised they didn't give him Doublehand by default. Would have made sense for his equip options/fighting style.

Ha, that's nice. Did his abilities get improved? I only tried Braver and uh, it was extremely underwhelming lol. I did hear they improved charge skills, so perhaps they're feasible now.

The charge times are all better now, with the higher level Limits having around twice the speed they did before. I believe his SOLDIER class has the original JP PS1 version growth, so his stats aren't as good. He still has decent multipliers, but he doesn't have the improved PA and MA growth any more. And the direct damage Limits like Braver, Cross Slash, Omnislash, etc, all have lower strength than the NA PS1 version (I'm not sure what the values were in the JP PS1 version).

Finally sat down with this. So far so good. Only some minor quibbles, like how on the PC version, it defaults to xbox button icons in-game, and doesn't let you change them until after the tutorial phase.

I started achievement hunting now that I think the end is in sight. God help me.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to get 10 poached carcasses turned into items that are not offered otherwise. Might need a guide for this one if I don't want to sit here forever slaughting poor bastages over and over again for rare caracasses and then hoping it makes something unique.

I think there are only about 17 total items that would count for this.

Most of them come from weird enemies like the pig or the behemoth families, too.

I have made something very silly (which is also a spoiler if you've never played the game or if you've forgotten it).

It occurs to me, reminding myself about the Reis subplot, that someone at Square must have been a fan of Ladyhawke.

Wiegraf fight is still a pain in the ass.

Overall I'm really enjoying this though. Ended up getting it on Switch and it's been perfect to play while watching football.

I turned the difficulty down to Squire for those fights because they're all a bunch of BS. (I forgot to turn it back up for quite some time.)

I finished the game on Tactician recently. I tried to avoid random battles... I think I only fought 5 or 6 the whole game, so I was significantly under the enemy level for most of the game.

I found things very difficult up through around chapter 2, but it evened out a lot once some reasonable builds started coalescing. I didn't have much trouble with Dorter 1, but Brigand's Den and Fort Ziekden were extremely rough and I had to restart both of them several times. I found the infamous Riovanes battles pretty close to the original game despite the Tactician buffs. The same tactics still work. It was actually levels with really bad terrain disadvantages that gave me some of the most trouble; the damage bonus that enemies get made archers legitimately very threatening, so fighting uphill on the TO-style Riovanes Gate map was brutal. Same for the Fort Besselat Sluice fight, where the archers and mages are like long range artillery.
