Final Fantasy Tactics ReWhatever Is A Real Thing

So glad that it’s finally getting a rerelease after WOTL! Almost started this again on PS1 recently (with the WOTL script hacked in), but I’ll just wait to play this and play Tactics Ogre for the time being.

Ah nice. Funnily enough I already had a half finished playthrough in progress, this remaster gives me a good opportunity to finally finish it LOL.

I loved this and the GBA games and would love to play through it again. Glad it's coming to steam, Xbox and Switch as well, will have to think about which one I want before September 30th.

The graphical updates look kind of weird to me. It looks to me like they applied some sort of algorithm to up-res the sprites. But then things like the waterfall effects look completely different; as if they weren't up-resed but redone.

SE doesn't have the underlying 3D models to go back to? Maybe they don't. Maybe they do and it would be too much labor to put them in a game with a niche audience. While I'm guessing there are fervent FFT fans; I have my doubts that a tactics game would sell any where close to a mainline FF title.

**
I played FFT on PS1 and Wii. I get to about the same place every time; around the 75% mark (after summoners and calculators are unlocked) I'm guessing and bounce off of it. As a tactics and FF fan, I feel like I should love this game.

I like it in the early going but its failed to capture my attention enough to want to finish it.

Maybe the ability to save in the middle of a battle will allow me to complete it.

I'm on the fence as to whether or not I will try this a 3rd time.

Will they bring back spell quotes? "Layer upon layer" or no sale.

My experience with the game is very similar to yours Voncaster. Still love the game a lot, but there's always been lots of things that have gotten in the way of actually beating the game in full. I'm hoping this remaster/remake/rewhatever will give enough QoL improvements to get me over the hump this time.

Xenogears hasn't had so much as a reprint or a port or a remaster a single time since the 90s. It's straight up abandoned by Square-Enix. If they're just gonna squat on an IP like that, they should be made to give it up to Monolith.

Parasite Eve is another Square Enix game that I would love to see re-released, but they seem to have no interest in it. Either that, or there is some legal issue that makes it unprofitable or undesirable to pursue.

I'm 50/50 on if I'm going to give FFT another try. I almost certainly won't play it at launch with Metal Gear Delta and Silent Hill f in close proximity.

I would love Square to license Xenogears to Monolith for a remaster now that everybody's all friends again. Bonus points if they redo Disk 2 / add an epilogue that ties it into the Xenoblade multiverse

I'm pretty sure PE was based on a novel, so it might have some rights issues. Didn't they release a mobile game "sequel" a while back that had all the names and serial numbers filed off?

Yeah, Parasite Eve is based on an actual novel, albeit one made to sell only on airport bookshelves. They removed almost all references to previous characters and events etc in 3rd Birthday precisely because their license to it had expired.

That being said, 3rd Birthday is kind of a crummy game anyway so frankly they shouldn't have even bothered.

I read that as Metal Gear Delita and thought, "Yeah, I'd play that."

A remaster of Xenogears would be great. And it should stay exactly as it was, including disk 2. It's absolutely perfect, in all its messy, messy glory.

Oh, right, this is about FFT. Played it one year ago, the first time I made it past chapter 1, and it is amazing. Wasn't too much into the gameplay itself, as tactics games aren't my preference (though it needs to be one, to work as well as it does), and it got too hard for me. But the story, the characters, the setting. It's awesome, and I think it stays awesome until the very end.

Also, I love Agrias. Let me just say, when Cid joined, I took his sword and gave it to her. And was glorious.

Considering how Parasite Eve 2 and 3 turned out, I have zero faith anyone at Square-Enix even understands why Parasite Eve is beloved to begin with, so I kinda don't even want them touching that property ever again until someone can prove to me they get it.

Agreed with you Felix, Disk 2's content needs to stay the way it is. But SE clearly doesn't want to have anything to do with the property so I'm beyond getting my hopes up for it.

Also, I love Agrias.
First time I played Tactics and I accidentally let her get perma-killed was a devastating moment in my life lol

Fully voiced is kinda wild.

The graphical updates are neat but I'm sure as hell glad I can turn them off.

For what it's worth, we don't know if you can turn the graphical updates off. "Classic" and "Enhanced" are actually two separate games included in Ivalice Chronicles; Classic is the 1997 original (with the War of the Lions localization script instead of the original NA script) and Enhanced is their fancy updated version with a new UI, full voice acting, and an updated script.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but it currently looks to me like this release is explicitly building off of the original release rather than War of the Lions. Nothing revealed so far has featured any of the content added in the PSP version. Matsuno wasn't involved in War of the Lions at all, but he was brought in for this version and is credited in marketing materials as "Scenario Writer and Editor", so they may have decided to forego the PSP content in favor of material actually penned by Matsuno.

I would be mortified. And replay the mission. I don't think, I could have taken it, that any of my trained-up units would be gone.

I mean, with Agrias, I could see it, if her death would have been something epic, fitting for her. Letting her have a true heroes death would be a nice headcanon moment. Probably still couldn't do it, though.

I don't need a Xenogears remaster. Just let me play it on a modern console.

Where Tactics is concerned, I've played this game precisely once and I quit about mid-way through. I remember playing along with some guide that told me to steal some kind of a weapon from a ninja and I tried for hours and couldn't get it done. I'll probably end up picking this up and playing it without a guide because "optimal gameplay" is the kind of shit I left behind two decades ago, thank whomever.

Xenogears made it as far as the Playstation 3, PSP, and Vita with its availability on PSN. The franchise also has a merch wing of the Square Enix store (link here, though I loathe to promote SE's terrible store). Xenogears music reappeared as DLC in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy fairly recently, and "XG" was weirdly integral to World of Final Fantasy (of all things). The game itself seems to be wallowing, but SE has hit that well sporadically over the years.
