Fightingdome Nomination Thread: Let’s Get Ready to Rhumba

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)

Ah, fighting games. A great test of dexterity for the gamer and of mashing those buttons until you fall ass backwards into a flipping axe kick or something for me. Anyway, that was my experience. I loved the fighting game genre as a kid and while I don’t keep up with most, I have a strong love of them when I play them. And they also have some killer tunes! And now we get to see them face off in a thunderdome. No “best two out of three” for this tourney, it’s one round each!

So the rules are simple:
  • List up to four fighting game tunes
  • Wait….
  • When the matches start, the entries will be put into one-on-one matches for “what do you like better”
  • Vote on the ones you like best!

What counts as a fighting game? Well, this seems pretty comprehensive with the subgenres like the 2, 2.5 and 3D fighters, arena fighters, platform fighters, etc.:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fighting_games

Even if it doesn’t include “Your game”, you can include anything that fits under the various subgenres listed here.

“Can we include covers?” Yes, this is allowed. Remixes too.

“Don’t lots of games have fighting?” Yeah, but mostly I’m looking for games that are about “combat between multiple characters, often (but not limited to) one-on-one battles.” But more specifically, let’s not to beat-em-ups or FPS games to stretch the definition.

“Wait, what about music from TV shows, movies, etc based on fighting games”. I don’t hate the idea but I think this time I want to stick with the games themselves. Still, if you include these, I won't kick them out of bed for eating crackers.

“Oh, Smash has countless music pieces that come from non-fighting games” Yeah, I don’t mind this. I mean, Smash Bros can be and to an extent has been it’s own topic before but if you really want to through one in there, you can. But if it's music in a fighting game that didn't originate there, I don't mind that.

Are there any songs we can’t do?

Exactly one: The Gerudo Valley arrangement from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

So I hope this clears things up! You have a week to get in your songs so the deadline is Monday, March 24th!

Until then...

This is such a broad topic and fighting games are so full of bangers that it was extremely difficult to narrow this down. My noms easily could have been entirely CPS2-era Capcom or solely Guilty Gear or all King of Fighters themes. Hell, even Soulcalibur III alone has at least 4 worthy tracks.

Soulcalibur III - "Ephemeral Dream (Setsuka)"
Street Fighter Zero 2 - "Adon"
Psychic Force - "Carry Away! (Sonia Theme)"
Guilty Gear XX - "Still in the Dark (Zato-1 vs Millia)"

I feel like a criminal not including any SNK tracks. Might replace Carry Away...
