Favourite Movies of 2020 - Two months at the theatre and ten at home

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
What are your favourite 2020 movies? I've only seen 2.

Weathering With You - I didn't like this one quite as much as Your Name. and its use of a global warming metaphor seems like its there more than its meaningful. But it was still a good movie and the last one I've seen in a theatre this year. Hopefully I will, next year. Maybe.

Color Out of Space - This is a great one. All the good stuff of Lovecraft without the racism. Nic Cage being himself. And a fantastic, ambitious final act.

I realize that "2020 feels long" is not a remotely new or insightful observation, but I simply cannot believe that Sonic the Hedgehog came out this year. It feels like it came out a million years ago.

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
I thought Colour out of Space came out last year, but that was my favourite movie this year if not.

Otherwise... erm... I guess Onward was decent.

I have Birds of Prey, Sonic the Hedgehog, Eurovision and Palm Springs on my list of things to watch, but which I have not watched yet.

Palm Springs was great. Can’t really think of anything else that sticks out. I’ll give soul a watch in the next couple of days.

Da 5 Bloods and The 40 Year Old Version and She Dies Tomorrow and I'm Thinking of Ending Things and First Cow and All of Steve McQueen's Small Axe films are very good

The Invisible Man and Birds of Prey and Eurovision are pretty good/fun

Rascally Badger

El Capitan de la outro espacio
(He/Him)
I keep a ranked list of every new movie I watch during a year. Usually I get to the end of the year and massage it a little bit to what feels right. Here's just the straight top 10 of my list.
  1. Emma.
  2. Da 5 Bloods
  3. Palm Springs
  4. Bill & Ted Face the Music
  5. Birds of Prey
  6. Lost Girls
  7. Borat 2
  8. The Vast of Night
  9. Wonder Woman 1984
  10. Mank

I'm fairly happy with that list. I could move some things around, but there are generally tiers to it. Da 5 Bloods and Emma. are my favorites of the year, the next four are all pretty close together, and the last four are a jumble.

I'll count any alleged 2019 movies that I couldn't have seen until 2020 bc they weren't released locally...

Birds of Prey: Its full title is truly bad; I know there are revisionist takes, but I disagree. This is a lot of fun.

The Invisible Man: Thrilling and satisfying.

Emma.: I don't really like to rank things but like Mr. Badger this was probably my favorite film of the year. This looks incredible and has great performances, including everyone's favorite Anya Taylor-Joy.

Beanpole: I am not smart... to me, when there is a very long shot of someone's face in a scene where quite dramatic things are happening, that's cinema. Vasilisa Perelygina gives a great performance.

She Dies Tomorrow: A stressful and engaging time.

The Old Guard: There is a place for completely earnest action films about dull immortals in my heart...

Dating Amber: would like to see Lola Petticrew and Fionn O'Shea in more things.

Run: high concept thrillers good. imo.

Monster Hunter: What if not just Milla Jovovich were hot and cool, but also Tony Jaa? This film dares to ask and answer that question. Lots of totally weird decisions in this one.

People should watch Bad Education. Very fun movie about embezzlement in a district school board. Probably Hugh Jackman's best performance.
