The second issue of Jessica Jones: The Variants came out yesterday.

The good: Frankly I just love reading a new JJ comic again. Multiverse shenanigans are kinda old-hat in the MCU by now but the mystery here is interesting enough to keep my attention. Jessica-as-Captain-America is a fun idea I wish we knew more about. Oh, and Jessica, as well as Luke and other characters who were on Netflix, all resemble their Netflix counterparts a bit more than previously, Kilgrave in particular looks more David Tennant-y than he has previously in comics. But speaking of...

The iffy: We're once again pulling from the Kilgrave well in a Jessica Jones story. Are these variants even real? Is some of this just in Jessica's head? Is ALL of it? Who knows?! That's the problem with Kilgrave. When he's used in a story when Jessica's the only one immune to his powers (like the Netflix series) then it helps ground the audience perspective at the very least, but when she's as vulnerable as everyone else then literally anything can be faked and we really won't know till the plot's over. That can be interesting, but jury's out on if that will work well here or not.

On a whim I started reading the post Heroes Reborn Fantastic Four.

And y’know, while I’m no fan of Scott Lobdells work on X-Men, his particular writing style, warts and all, works really well for FF.

So I’m reading “Spider-Man 2099: Exodus: Alpha" and I'm confused as hell. Last time we saw Miguel he was trapped in the past after Spencer's mediocre "2099: Omega" and now we're suddenly back in 2099 and The Avengers are dead and there's this organization so powerful and famous their members can go full The Purge without Alchemax cops batting an eye? Did I miss anything?

Also, who approved the number of semicolons in this title and who keeps insisting in Alphaing and Omegaing these events? Come out, I just want to talk.

reading something bad from the 90s (Maverick solo series) and wondering, has there even been a coherent explanation for why the Good Guys don't want Omega Red to get the Carbonadium Synthesizer? he's an energy vampire who has to kill to live until he can get it, so i feel like the right decision is to just give it to him. he's also a serial killer and so this wouldn't stop him doing murders just for the love of the game, but you have to imagine overall you're reducing the amount of killing he does by taking away the need to also meet a minimum kill quota.

pre-cancellation excalibur is all over the place

would you ever guess this was rahne sinclair?

also, here's douglock--he used to look like doug ramsey but a phalanx, but now he's got what appear to be techno-organic white boy dreadlocks, i guess? not sure what haircut they're going for, but it does not work

also in this storyline, they're fighting the sidri

pretty much the most interesting thing about the sidri is that they're a flat and abstract design that basically only woks in comics, here's how cockrum drew them, as just a black void encroaching on the space of their panels:

but this storyline takes away the one thing they've got going for them (a cool look that's unique to the medium) and introduces Extreme 90s Sidri, a more anthropomorphized alien mook:

big downgrade, in my opinion, excited for this book to be put out of its misery

I won’t lie; I like that look for Douglock, but only by merit of liking it when artists go kind of nuts with Phalanx designs

Ryan North is writing Fanastic Four, starting this Novemember, and he wants to focus on mostly stand-alone stories.

It's strange Christmas is one month early this year, but I won't complain!

Looking forward to that for sure, though I'd love to see Ewing get a crack at the first family eventually too.

what they're trying to do: "curing the legacy virus is moira mctaggart's white whale, and she refuses to let it dominate her life anymore"
what's happening in these panels: "moira keeps a secret copy of moby dick in her lab coat, and she's not going to read it anymore"

in fairness and to add context, the arc was more about how she was engaging in self-destructive and self-isolating behaviors and she needs to give herself a few days off and talk to other people, sometimes

but also in general there are definitely parts of moira's portrayal in late excalibur that are so stupid they work better with the 2019/2021 retcon (e.g. (recentish spoilers) she's either isolating because she's working on something else entirely that she can't show the team, maybe something evil, or it's the golem putting on a show)

man, the Moira retcon makes so many plot holes make sense.

And some plot point that weren’t holes make a different kind of sense

oh also alternate reality nazi excalibur including holocaust victim inspired ghost kitty pryde make a lighthearted cameo at brian and meggan's wedding in the last issue

BYGSv7a.png

this whole team's existence is extremely messy to begin with but i think it more or less works in the original appearances, just barely

but, i don't think it works to bring back this team and especially this extremely haunting kitty as well behaved wedding guests making color commentary!

Why would you invite them to the wedding?

so the wedding took place in otherworld and was officiated by roma and was full of alternate reality captains britian who i guess were invited by default

but i think even in that case you kind of should make an exception to actively disinvite the evil nazi version of you who leads the team with ghost holocaust kitty pryde as a subservient thrall

That's fucked. Nazi Captain Britain as part of the Captain Britain Corps goes back to Moore and Davis' run on Captain Britain (is it the SAME Nazi Britain?) and they also had a 1984 Captain Britain as well. Roma and Merlyn have certainly employed some real shits.

Like… umm… the vast majority of Marvel fans, I’ve never given a rootin’ toot about the Eternals. Nice Jack Kirby splash pages in the original run, and the Gaiman reboot had a couple of sequences I liked, but… y’know that’s it. Genuinely enjoyed the movie.

But I started reading the current run by Kieran Gillian, and dang. This good Comics.

I asked this on Reddit a few days ago, but I got no response, but I recently read The Sensational She-Hulk by John Byrne: The Return. Does anybody know if there's a trade that collects the last nine issues of Sensational?

Jessica Jones: The Variants #3 is out and seems to suggest a different mystery than just being Kilgrave again, which would be nice. Not that Kilgrave still doesn't loom large but it's better handled here. Jessica realizing that the Jewel variant hasn't (yet?) encountered Kilgrave and hugging her was a sweet moment for our favorite curmudgeon.

This still could just be another Kilgrave plot, especially with how the issue ends, but I'm enjoying the ride so far.

So one of my favourite comics last year/earlier this year (reading in Unlimited makes it hard to tell) was Way of X, an X-Men spinoff largely about Nightcrawler trying to found a new mutant religion based on the laws of Krakoa, while being secretly worked against by a resurrected Onslaught, whose been exploiting the moral gaps present in Krakoan society.

Well it got a follow up this past week on unlimited in the form of Legion of X, which is a police procedural on Krakoa. It’s a lot of fun, based on the first issue, and it’s already got a couple of mysteries what need untangling and there’s some connective tissue to the original story, but it’s otherwise… just a wildly different set of mental gears in play.

Also, Juggernaut is on the team;

No, but non-mutant family members are allowed on Krakoa, and Juggernaut did everyone a solid by saving the island a couple of times on Charles’ behalf so he has a probationary citizenship
