Both Anno and his wife have said Mari is not his wife.

Can I get a source on this? Not because I do not believe it or anything, but simply because I have an NGE-loving friend who has not stopped regurgitating this "she's his wife" "fact" for the last decade, and I would like him to stop.

I watched the first hour+ a few days ago but had to go to bed for work and I work 12 hour shifts so, basically, I'll finish it today! BUT! I do have two things to say for now:

1) That opening scene was one of the most embarrassing things I've seen in my life. I was literally cringing the entire time. The next thing that happened had me cringing too, but it ended up going somewhere I was okay with.

2) Dear fucking sweet LORD, the "fan service"?! They're FOURTEEN...going into it I felt like this was gonna be a hard-to-recommend movie even if I ended up liking it but this sureeeeee doesn't help!

Are you talking about
Asuka being nude?
I thought they handled that in a pretty mature way - it's a nonissue for everyone involved. Especially given how the third party in that scene would have acted when they were children, it helped to show the maturity of the characters.

Zef

Find Your Reason
(He/Him)
Is it maturity, though? The one actual adult aside, it felt to me like the reactions (or lack thereof) came from the different forms of depression both characters were suffering.

But yes,, media doesn't exist in a vacuum, and it would be a lot easier to accept the above if a) they weren't both visually coded as children b) historically pushed as fanservice by the franchise. (We discussed Asuka and Mari's case at length much earlier in the thread, and Shinji is 14. He spent all that time between 2.0 and 3.0 frozen so he aged neither physically nor mentally. He's absolutely a child.)

Tomm Guycot

(he/him)
Presented ages are problematic yes, but the scene...
Is constructed much differently than elsewhere in the series (where we are just placed at a crotch cam on Asuka, for example). Yes she's naked onscreen, but Shinji doesn't react, and Asuka's annoyance is less desperate/serious than we've seen (exposing her chest to Kaji, etc). It's more playful annoyance.

The only reaction it gets is Kensuke casually dropping a jacket on her because for the love of God Asuka wtf.

So, okay. So...

...
...

So, okay. So it's...really bad? But also good? But also like...unwatchably bad? And I haven't seen parts 2/3 in years so it feels like...I must've forgotten huge swathes of it cuz some of this makes no sense at all? Like I don't even remember Shinji or Mari ever even TALKING to each other before this movie? But then that happened?!

...but it was good? But it sucked?! Like was just horrible?! But good too?!?

I gotta go lie down

The movie makes absolutely no sense if you're trying to reconcile the rules of how Evas and Angels work in this film versus how they're characterized in previous films or the TV show. Like, hey, we'll just make a new super spear b/c why tf not?

BUT! All the important things - the character interactions, the characterizations, the personalities and perspectives of all the various characters makes PERFECT sense, to the degree that it's extremely abundant that Anno spent a lot of the time between 3.0 and 3+1 hashing out exactly who does what and why they're doing it. In fact, the movie does such a good job in that department that it retroactively makes a lot of the bizarre or weird stuff that people commonly complained about 3.0 make total sense. There's a not insignificant amount of time spent in the movie carefully and precisely explaining how Misato could have gone from cheering Shinji on during the climax of 2.0 in the Near Third Impact, to being an asshole to Shinji in 3.0 that wanted nothing to do with him. Same with Asuka and the rest of the cast more or less.

This reconciliation and explanation of character motivations was one of my favorite bits of the film because I find it utterly fascinating when a creator like this really takes a careful look at what they've made, absorbs criticisms and feedback in an earnest way, and then goes back and tries to fix all those things that didn't make sense. Not necessarily to scrub those points of confusion out of existence, but to carefully decide how to best explain what was going on a second time. I got very strong Gundam: Reconguista in G compliation film vibes from 3+1, and that's a very good thing.

(Note: Goggle Bob does not recognize how NGE movie numbering works)

Erm... not to yuck your yum here, but I am something like 90% sure that is not the case here. Watching 3 & 4 back to back, I feel it was a very dedicated storytelling plan to (general spoilers for anyone that wants to go into these movies clear) make the "future" of 3 deliberately unfamiliar, confusing, and "mysterious", because that is exactly where Shinji "is" when he wakes up years later and finds all his friends/world changed. Shinji kinda sorta destroyed the world at the end of 2, and the audience needs to feel the consequences of that in the same way Shinji confusedly drifts from faction to faction. Then, give or take the bombastic opening of 4, we get past 3, and immediately move on to "the world isn't so alien, people are living the best lives they can, and here's the reason everyone has distinct Shinji opinions now". The world is more familiar again, and Shinji is able to grow with the support of people he understands. That was very deliberately impossible in the claustrophobic plot of 3.

Also. as a general plotting thing, if Shinji (and the audience) understood exactly what was going on in 3, we would not have been able to have things like Shinji casually hanging around at his dad's office and the insights we gleamed from that (I'm sorry Miss Jackson (oh), Nerv is three guys).

In short, I do not feel like the difference between 3 & 4 is some matter of retcon or "taking feedback": a lot of what you are describing seems very much planned from the start. Like, the whole of the finale hangs on the fact that Misato and Gendo were apparently always destined to be very similar, terrible parents, and I can't see that just being the kind of thing that was thrown in there for some kind of explanation of why people were acting a particular way. Inevitably, any piece of art is influenced by time involved and the environment where it is ultimately made, but I feel like 4 would have been much the same product regardless of others' input, and 3 was deliberately hiding its hand for revelations in 4.

In all ways, what a singular kind of film. It resists summation, critique. There is no use recommending this to anyone. You already know in the marrow of your bones whether you're going to watch this.

That's not a flaw. Shinji is pointedly moving on with someone he has no real baggage with.

So I watched it too and I'm still thinking about it, still trying process what all happened, but the short of what I'm thinking is that this is probably the best ending NGE could ever get.

I don't think you quite get what I'm saying here? What I believe is happening and what you believe is happening is likely fundamentally pretty similar. You're just not picking up what I'm writing. The core ideas here of the films I do believe was planned from the start. However I feel that the execution of those ideas is what's likely gone through an extended editing process. There is a sense of clarity in the script and exposition in 3+1 that's just never been in any of Anno's previous works that tells me he spent a lot of effort to make sure that this time around the themes that were important to him weren't lost in the shuffle like normal. As much as alienation of Shinji and thus the viewer was important for setting the stage of 3.0 and carrying through the themes of the back-half of the TV show, I highly doubt that it was intended that viewers be so confused that they wouldn't even understand the underlying themes to begin with. I very intentionally avoided the use of the word 'retcon' because that's not what's going on. But rather, 3+1 is giving us additional context with which to better appreciate what was even going on in 3.0. Kind of like how Kill Bill vol 2 gives the viewers a lot of additional context and explanation for a better appreciation of what happened in Kill Bill vol 1. The only difference is that was clearly the plan for Tarantino all along, and there's zero chance the movie that became 3+1 was the exact same ideas that were floating about in Anno's head coming off of 3.0 NINE years ago, because that's not how human beans work, and we generally know what his mindset was inbetween productions.

Shinji kinda sorta destroyed the world at the end of 2, and the audience needs to feel the consequences of that in the same way Shinji confusedly drifts from faction to faction.
That's the thing though. He wasn't really responsible for anything that was happening. He was a 14yo kid who was just doing what the adults in the room were asking him to do, and he was just trying his best to be helpful and to save a girl he cared for who was in distress in front of him. And that's especially when he's kept completely in the dark about the nature of the thing that he's piloting or the high stakes ramifications of what happens when this or that combines. Misato knew what was going on re: Third Impact, but she still shouted encouragement towards Shinji to have him carry out the Third Impact nonetheless because she believed in him. So it's baffling that she's suddenly seems to have forgotten all of that context in 3.0 and is blaming Shinji and being an ass to him despite her knowing better. 3+1 tells us she didn't forget, and in fact she was secretly putting up walls to protect Shinji from herself and the rest of what they were doing, but it went and backfired spectacularly. But without anything in 3.0 so much as hinting at this, we as viewers have no idea that this was the plan or the motivations in 3.0.

And here's the kicker - if Shinji had just been allowed to carry out Third Impact in this scenario without Kaoru cutting it short, things... probably would have gone well! The Rebuild version of Shinji is a lot more sure of himself, a lot more determined, a lot less depressed, and has stronger ties to the people around him. It takes the Deus Ex Machina of 3.0 to put him into a position of alienation and depression in order to conform to the broad arc of the TV show. And when Fourth Impact goes and happens in 3+1, things... end well! Because again, we've got a better, wiser, more compassionate, more determined, less depressed and self-loathing Shinji at the helm who can guide the recreation of the world into one that's much more positive and normal and can move on without Evas instead of eternally repeating the same cycle of misery and destruction.

Both Anno and his wife have said Mari is not his wife.

I would like to to point out that if I were going to introduce a new, potentially controversial female character based on my wife into a remake of my legendary series with an obsessive-trending-toward-virulent fanbase I sure as shit wouldn't tell people that's where I got my inspiration.

WE WILL RETURN TO THIS TOPIC SHORTLY, THANK YOU

Alright alright, I slept on it. Let's goooooooo

- First of all; without exception, all of the action in this movie sucks. The opening fight is particularly embarrassing; it's impossible to tell what's going on half the time, and when you can, it's a bunch of total nonsense mixed with cliches. I was LITERALLY, in the literal sense of the word not the way people use it today, cringing while watching it. The sequence where NERV shoots thousands of half finished Evas like missiles is also supposed to be cool, but it makes no sense (TWO PEOPLE work at NERV...like...how did they build all these and even if they had them how did they LAUNCH THEM BY THEMSELVES?! Fuyutski AND GENDO weren't even there when it happened!) The Evas are falling for a disproportionate amount of time relative to where they started, and you can't see NERV HQ below them as they're falling, and a large number of those Eva missiles get past Asuka and Mari, and yet the Wunder is just...like...fine? And then they go oh hey we're here and suddenly they are? It just doesn't make sense from a purely...uh, I wanna say geographic standpoint? Like that scene has no concept of space at all. Arguably none of that matters, because it's set up for Asuka fucking up a ton of robots, but all of that looked so lame so it ended up being a huge waste of time.

- Re: Proper Nouns. Yes, there are a ton of poorly/non-explained Proper Nouns in this movie. I think that's fine to an extent; there's enough that you get the gist of what's going on. Like okay yeah Spears are important and I guess somehow a cyber boat can make a Spear, sure. And that...does...something. But it's good. Okay got it. Everyone on Earth's souls are like...red stuff that turn into Evas? And these black things Misato put in the ground can stop that? Okay, sure. Okay. I guess Evangelions are imaginary too? Okay, absolutely. Evas' always had this so it's hard to get mad about it being there.

Makes enough sense, I guess. But...let's be real here, it's bad storytelling. The core of this story can be told without all of this nonsense, can't it? Again, Eva has always had this, so I can't get TOO mad. But it's primarily there as an excuse to do some visually interesting things, but I think it's debatable if this movie succeeds at that. Like does Gendo need to become an angel? Nope, but if we say he used a Proper Noun and did, then we can make his head look cool! What is the Black Moon and why are there dead people's souls everywhere? Who cares doesn't it look neat?!

It definitely does at times; I liked all the...uh, fuckin' anti-universe or whatever they called it, stuff. Asuka turning into an angel and getting killed by Unit 13 was great visually. There's some cool stuff. But a lot of this stuff just feels like bloat; more stuff for the sake of more stuff.

Oh also please try to be consistent with your dumb Proper Nouns, Anno. It doesn't need to be Fourth Impact AND Another Impact. Or 3rd Impact AND Near Third Impact. Pick one!

- It is extremely convenient that in a world where there's like 3 towns total, so we're talking like maybe a few thousand people left on Earth AT BEST, 3 of Shinji's childhood friends just so happened to survive. Once I got over the initial premise, the village sequence I think works and is one of the better sequences in the movie. Rei getting fridged to further Shinji's development is...it makes sense, but feels fucked up at the same time? But ultimately where Shinji goes after that is good, and all the EoE-esque anti-life equation or whatever shit that happens between Shinji and Gendo is all good.

- Shinji's arc comes at the expense of nearly every female character in the movie. This movie is aggressively unkind to women (Sakura, the only person who ever showed Shinji any degree of kindness is rewarded by being completely ignored and then...well, we don't really know what happens to the people who survived after Shinji resets the world). Rei gets gooped, Asuka gets killed solely so Shinji can save her, Mari...we'll come back to that, Misato's arc is a fucking nightmare, Ritsuko isn't in the movie, and even Pink Pout Lips (if she has a name I have no idea what it is) goes through some emotional trauma just so Shinji can grow up. Shinji's arc is the core of the movie, and the one thing I think works, but we have to acknowledge that this movie is not kind to women in the process of getting to that point.

- I have no idea what Kaji is supposed to represent. Like...he stopped 3rd Impact? How? Is there a switch? He was...working for Kaworu? What? I don't know, fuck it.

- The idea of a cyclical timeline is...I don't really get what that adds to the story? Like okay sure, I guess you could argue the TV show and Rebuilds are the same universe now? Is that...good? Or bad? Is it anything? I don't know, fuck it.

- So if you survived 3rd Impact, and Shinji rewrites the world...do you still remember 3rd Impact and the post apocalypse? Did Shinji just rewrite Tohji/Hikari's baby out of existence? Does Shinji even remember?! Thematically it doesn't matter, but I can't help but wonder.

- I did like that they made explicit two things that have always been in Eva but people just tended to gloss over; 1) that aliens created humanity and we came to know them as Gods and 2) Gendo is the ultimate Wife Guy™. I liked the entire sequence with Gendo/Shinji and Shinji being the one to show him how wrong he was was a nice way to end the series. Actually Shinji ending up saving everyone emotionally and literally was a nice way to end things.

- Lastly; Mari. Mari. Mari?! Who the fuck even IS Mari?! She did next to nothing in the previous movies and as far as I know existed solely to sell toys and models. And then in THIS VERY MOVIE she STILL does next to nothing important (just some fight scenes), until the end, when suddenly it's revealed she knows Fuyutski? All the children were chosen for specific reasons, but she doesn't really have a reason to be there even that late in the game...until it's kinda hinted at that Fuyutski was helping her in order to stop Gendo? In which case like, bro, you could've stopped him a hundred different ways over the years why didn't you just do that? But I'm only even just guessing here cuz bro gets turned to goop and it's all left vague. But then she eats a bunch of robots and is like "Shinji, I'll come for you" (I think I have the order mixed up here, but either way). I literally laughed and said outloud "WHY THOUGH"! You don't even KNOW SHINJI! You guys like...barely spoke to each other?!

To Jeanie's point, I get why Shinji would act the way he does. He's starting a relationship with the one person he knows who he doesn't have baggage with. BUT WHY DOES SHE SUDDENLY LIKE SHINJI? She's double his age too, remember?! They were the same and he was in stasis for 14 years and she didn't physically age but TIME PASSED so she's 28?! Why is she even thinking about Shinji? THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER. It's...what?! Why! Why did any of that happen? It really felt like they were coming up on the end of the movie and were like "oh shit, Mari doesn't need to be here and hasn't done anything important, we'd better write in something important for her before we go" and that important thing is "like Shinji". What the fuck? I can understand "well, Shinji's going to go save the world but might die in the process, so I should try to save him" but then the last bit...like why would she choose to do that?

Oh right, cuz this movie treats women like sacrificial lambs for Shinji's arc. Right, right.

Anyway yeah. What a mess! A mess of a movie. There's stuff to like, but more stuff to hate on balance. I have no idea how I feel about it, which I guess is...something. It's interesting? But it's also a bunch of gibberish like 80% of the time?! Fuck. I have no idea. Part of me wants to watch the movies again to see if I walk away from it different, and the other part of me wants to just be entirely done with all of it.

Oh yeah and the Hikaru Utada song was great but we all knew that before it even came out so whatevs

Edit: I forgot, the scene where Gendo and Misato start talking in The Orange Room™ is unintentionally hilarious. That room has no noticeable entrances, so when Ritsuko just suddenly appears and is instantly next to Misato I laughed out loud. Then Shinji blinks into existence! Then Pink Pout Lips appears magically! AND THEN SAKURA! And then, like, FIVE OTHER PEOPLE!!!!!!!! They all just teleport in instantly! Terrible editing, but really fuckin' funny. I was into it.

I calmly disagree with WH's take of 3, because I certainly understood the themes loud and clear. (How do y'all do the hidden text in teh highlight blobs?
Shinji "got what he wanted" in 2, which is different from the show. Shinji getting what he wanted didn't fix things / didn't make him happy - it made everything worse. And the people left behind had to pick up the pieces. And since what Shinji wants is so similar to what gendou wants, Gendou also got what he wanted. None of this changes in the Kaworu Impact - Shinji would still be trying to get what he wanted. He needed that to very clearly be still screwed up, and still make everyone's lives worse, for him to realize life is not about getting what you want.

Because this perfectly sets up the resolution to 3+1, which is

Live life the best you can, learn, and grow, and be a better person. Develop friendships and they'll care about you and make your life better. And freaking talk to people. Don't assume you know what they think of you, or that problems have to be yours alone to solve.

apparently everything that happens in the preview for 3.0 that was at the end of 2.0 actually happens, so Kaworu was in charge of NERV and Kaji was working for him

I don't have much to say, because I haven't seen the movies (only rewatched the original anime...say, two years ago?), but find you comments very interesting. So, I can only add:
How do y'all do the hidden text in teh highlight blobs?
In you text field, you have five options in the upper left (Remove formatting, bold,...) after the five symbols, you have three vertical dots. Click on them. You will get five new symbols below the original ones. The last one, which looks like a mask, is called "Inline Spoiler", and is used for that kind of spoilers.

Alixar, I can answer probably upwards of 80% of your questions if you want.

I will say that "uncharitable towards women" is relative. Do a bunch of women die for Shinji's personal growth? Sure. And in a vacuum it's not great. I find that relative though because literally the entire world dies for Shinji's growth, not just the women in the show/films. And on an individual basis, when you use the original TV show and EoE as the main point of reference, I'd say 3+1 is much more charitable towards its female cast. Everyone largely meets the same fate they did in the show and the original film, but how it happens, and the road towards them getting there is vastly improved. Every female character with baggage gets some measure of redemption and resolution to their issues in ways they never got in EoE. Misato comes to terms with her demons and goes out in a blaze of glory instead of being a pathetic creep dying in a corner. Rei gets to experience life and living in ways that no Rei before her ever was the beneficiary of. Asuka grows up mentally, comes to terms with her issues, and even gets to do a reverse of the infamous choking scene where she forces food down Shinji's gullet. Ritsuko gets to blow Gendo's brains out in ways that just feels like straight up revenge for how EoE plays out. Even Toji's sister, who was unnamed, faceless, without any personality or agency in the TV show gets to become a real character with all of those things. Nobody is really victimized the way they are in EoE, everyone goes out on their own terms with their own agency intact for the most part.

I calmly disagree with WH's take of 3, because I certainly understood the themes loud and clear.
I like your read on this, but I can't really subscribe to it. At least not in full. And one of the reasons is context. One of the fundamental aspects of the Rebuild movies is that one of the primary things they do and exist for is to comment on the themes, motifs, and characterizations of the TV show. And Shinji "getting what he wants" doesn't really do that. Because in the show, Shinji doesn't even really know what he wants. The fact that he does know what he wants in the Rebuild movies is a big departure from the original, and that he has the drive and the courage to proactively try to get what he wants I see as positive character growth and not in any way a negative. What I do think the Rebuild movies do, is that they're also critiques of the audience. Shinji "getting what he wants, but not really, learn to accept suffering" doesn't quite do that. But Shinji not indulging in any of the mopey behavior that fans have shit on him and the show for endlessly over the years, but it still not changing any of the events, I always thought was interesting meta commentary. It's really as if Anno was saying, "Hey, don't shit on my mans just because he's depressed and has issues. That's not why bad things happen to him."

One of the things I liked about the Rebuild movies is how there were shots from the old mirrored in this, like the Rei/Asuka elevator scene. The example of this that really struck home this was near the end. End of Eva ended with Shinji sitting on the red water beach of a ruined world, curled up and looking his feet, while 3.0 + 1 ended with sitting on the normal beach looking up and forward.

Dear Lord, I forgot the most inexcusable part! The F A N S E R V I C E

Yes I know, it's always been a part of Eva. But there sure is A LOT of it, isn't there? Mari and Asuka are 14-year-old bodies and they so happen to get new plug suits with multiple butt shots and panty shaped outlines and oh hey here's their bare asses, and let's just have Asuka nude for like 40 minutes for no real reason? What the fuck! Even at the end when Shinji and Asuka are briefly on the EoE beach, her plug suit is ripped up and there's side boob and stuff. They just throw out random and pointless side boob and thigh shots! At the emotional climax of a 25+ year franchise!

Why! No, dude they're 14! What the fuck! It really undermines the rest of the movie, I feel. There's some good ideas in there but there's also...this, on top of all the mess I mentioned earlier. It's...a lot. It's a lot! This movie is A Lot™ It's a serious and beautiful movie with a singular artistic vision that was made in 2020, an achievement in itself these days, but it's also a train wreck shitshow disaster with underage panty shots. It's a satisfying end to a franchise, and also a completely joyless waste of time, AND scumbag garbage all at once. It's A Lot™ It's SO MUCH

Pajaro Pete

(He/Himbo)
no, see, asuka's body had aged up to her real age in that scene on the beach, so the torn plug suit was necessary to communicate that to the audie---faaaaaaaaart

Is there any plans to release the last installment on Blu Ray anytime soon? Outside of Japan, that is. I have the first three and want to finish the collection.

Are there plans? Almost definitely. Will it be soon? Probably not. The pipeline to domestic BD releases is usually very long. Like, over a year in most cases.

I don't know the reason for why it takes so long. I assume it's a combo of taking a long time to figure out the distribution rights, the cottage size nature of the anime market, or just giving the domestic Japanese market a comfortable exclusivity window for their own releases, since Japanese fans have increasingly taken to importing American anime BDs on account of them being astronomically cheaper for us than them. But it's pretty standard for there to be 1 or 2 year delay between things coming out in Japan and things coming out elsewhere when it comes to BDs.

Just went and rewatched the first three rebuild movies again. I felt like my memory of their main themes held up pretty well and didn’t change much about my original evaluation of 3+1 besides just finding myself generally appreciating what 3+1 pulled off even more, and appreciating the fullness of the entire Rebuild series. Very good stuff.

Husband and I made our way through these at the rate of about one a week. I’m really glad I waited, because I do not know how y’all sat with 3.33 for over a decade. I loved that one but oooof was it bleak.

Anyway, we liked all of them! End of Eva will always be my favorite, but as a franchise that’s all about the cycles of depression it needed another go at a more hopeful ending. I do think EoE is ultimately a hopeful film, though about humanity in general, not the particular characters it was following.
