The teaser linked in the first post of the thread is gone now, but it's still up on the official Khara Youtube so just posting the official version here to keep things together for anyone who wants to watch the trailers.

Wait... Was that Meta Knight's space ship at the end there?

We're not that blessed. It's a different slightly anthropomorphic cartoon ship.

The excerpt from One Last Kiss in the newest trailer getting stuck in my head is reminding me how unfair it is that they get to use Utada Hikaru songs to promote these movies. It's kind of ridiculous how good Sakura Nagashi was for Eva Q in particular.

There was a coronavirus emergency declaration today, so Japanese social media was an endless string of delays and closure announcements. They have delayed midnight screenings of this as well. I wonder if there might be a broader delay or if they just go on with it.

The movie itself is done though. Just let me watch the .mkv, in my opinion.

(Japan had a strong initial response and relative normalcy for a while, but then even though they never got to zero cases they bizarrely immediately shifted into actively encouraging tourism and dining out with government programs paying people to do so, and so surprise surprise it's a huge problem again and a bunch of stuff is getting cancelled or delayed.)

Not Eva but of interest to people who like it: Anno and Higuchi's long rumored Shin Ultraman is official now, announced for this Summer, but probably dependent on Covid-19 getting back under control.

Aha, I thought that looked like it had some awfully similar tone and such to Shin Godzilla when it was posted in the other thread...

This time Anno is producer and screenwriter instead of screenwriter and co-director, but yeah this seems to basically be the followup to Shin Godzilla, with Higuchi as the sole director this time.

Sagisu Shirou is apparently handling the score again as well.

The Dramatic! Shots! Of People! Doing Bureaucratic Work! are so in tune with Shin Goji that I almost want both films to share the same continuity. I've never watched an Ultraman in my life, but I'm very intrigued to find out what social messages this version wants to convey.

Like, we all agree that 3.0 was bad and 4 is only gonna be way way worse and it'll be an insane trainwreck?
I love 3.0 and every time I watch it it reminds me how great 2.0 is and I end up doing a full rewatch (have avoided that this go round).

The feminist reading of 3.0 is also great as...
look what happens when men get exactly what they want, and women have to do all the hard work of cleaning it up. Shinji can you just STOP you've done enough

even if 3+1(=)4 is bad, I'll be in just to hear the full version of the Utada theme over the credits.

To be fair to the movie, I only watched all of them once and I liked 1 and 2, but 3 just felt...like I was basically making a  face and thinking "do I...like this...?" the whole time and I couldn't really enjoy it? I dunno, I was gonna rewatch all of them before 4 anyway, but I kinda remember just not being into it. I think I was hung up on the idea that "this is different just to be different".

I do remember thinking it was a bit of a mess though, and I doubt that'll change during the rewatch, and that gets me double hyped for 4 because it is almost assuredly gonna be a huge disaster, and I am R E A D Y. I hope he melts Gigantic Rei AGAIN. I hope everyone is mad at him again and he drinks their tears. Step on us, Anno

The meta-textual stuff of 3.0 was insanely interesting, but the meat of the film itself was rather boring and bleak. It reminded me a lot of Bakemonogatari with regards to the setting being this bleak, empty void, filled only with geometric shapes that merely suggests a location. As well as how the story focuses on an inherently unlikeable main character as he navigates a minefield of monologues by disinterested but secretly interested teenage girls.

If I laughed way too hard at that, do I get to say, "I'm fucked up" as a followup?

All of this but unironically

this movie is actually being released in theaters in a few days

Wait, really? o_ô

Figures that the actual, for realsies, honest to goodness to murgatroyd, we swear, end of Evangelion would release in theaters when nobody should be going to theaters.

(Disclaimer: I don't know what Japan's theater policies are. But I think back to the audience shown in EoE and yyyyyyyep I can definitely see a theater packed with the exact same fans, just 20 years older.)

The day after Japan announced they'd be lifting the state of emergency on March 7, Studio khara announced Eva would be in theaters on March 8.

i don't know it's very strange because both Sailor Moon Crystal movies came out earlier this year when i have to assume the pandemic was still Not Great in Japan?

The Demon Slayer movie broke Japanese box office records a few months back, beating Spirited Away's record for the top grossing film. (Not adjusted for inflation, but still.) Everyone in that industry has yen-signs on the brain rn for theaters.

It sounds like certain businesses are voluntarily closed and others mandated.

So if theaters are closed being "released" won't mean a whole lot.

If they're open, it will do business but ironically the last Eva film might spread a worldwide catastrophe.
