Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally has a release date - Jan. 23, 2021 (12321 OK we get it Anno symmetry or something)

It also has a teaser trailer!

Any thoughts? Looks like maybe a multiverse kind of thing? If you pause the trailer at :30, you can see the ship is flying through a cloud of Evas.

The state of the planet in the previous movie looked like the image below, so I don't think we would necessarily need that type of story to see that imagery.

I haven't seen any of the rebuild movies and had been vaguely thinking of watching them all when it's all complete. Good to see I still don't actually need to worry about that for a while yet.

Wait, is this finally the 4th of the reboot movies, or... what's happening with those anyway?

Yes, this is the fourth and final movie.

What's happening is that after the third movie Anno had extremely serious depression and felt like he couldn't do anything, then he made Shin Godzilla as his first major directorial project after that, and now they're releasing this in January after a half year long Covid-19 delay.

So this means an European BR release somewhere in late summer 2021. Hood, gives me time to go into the backroom and dig out the first three movies because I can (not) remember what happened in 3.0.

(This is not a jab against the quality of the movies - it's just been too long! And 2
0 will forever be one of the most amazing nerdastic moments of my life)

And I've seen the names for both kingdom hearts games and the new neir.

Eva is bad and WE were bad to allow it to destroy anno for the last 15 FUCKING YEARS.

The sad anime teens CLEARLY cause him nothing but misery! Why did we make him do this? Why did we force him to spend THAT LONG on a fucking remake of something that had already ended TWICE?

Also why the shit aren't the anime teens all in their 30s, since 15 fucking years have passed in universe.

DON'T YOU FUCKING TELL ME THE IN-STORY JUSTIFIFICATION FROM THE WIKI PAGE.

THAT AIN'T THE ANSWER AND WE ALL KNOW IT.

When they explained, back in the last movie, that their stunted teen appearance was "the curse of Eva" I immediately assumed that it was Anno taking a potshot at both the 40-to-50-somethings who lust after them, and the marketing juggernaut behind the show, neither of which will ever let these characters be anything other than exploitable 14 year-olds.

(Sure the line may refer to some weird in-universe technobabble about Evangelion pilots but we all know that's just Anno claiming plausible deniability.)

If he wanted to hurt those creeps, he should have STOPPED MAKING THEM BE 14-15 YEARS OLD.

It's not a fucking epic own if you're just doing exactly what they want but without a very good explanation!

Who would have stopped him from going "Angry and Glasss are both 30 now because they have been alive for that many years."

What were they gonna do, fire him over creative differences?

I mean if they didn't shitcan him after he took 5 years to half-finish something that was supposed to be 100% done 3 years ago, or after he threw away the entire plan in favor of a weirdass timeskip to blood skull world, they weren't gonna shitcan him for saying "People born 30 years ago are 30 years old."

YES I KNOW THIS IS A STUPID DETAIL TO GET HUNG UP OVER, BUT THE REST OF THE MOVIE WAS SUCH AN INCOHERENT MESS IT'S LITERALLY THE ONLY THING I REMEMBER.

WAIT NO THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT SHINJI'S SELF-APPOINTED BOYFRIEND'S HEAD EXPLODING I REMEMBER THAT TOO.

It's very hard to treat Anno as an innocent bystander to that given the context of both the original show and the reboots.

What's happening with those anyway?

A follow up on this:

Studio Khara put out a kind of video update a a couple years ago that touchers on Anno's struggles with depression and the general process of putting these movies out. His wife writes an autobiographical comic and it's an adaptation of that, which is where the visual style comes from here. I thought of linking it earlier but didn't because I saw the official video has no English subtitles, but today the YouTube algorithm showed me there is a fan version with subtitles. (I know you speak Japanese, but for anyone else who is interested.)

tbh, probably the Production Committee? It's not like Anno's studio - Studio Khara - can probably self-fund the production, distribution, and advertisement of a movie of this magnitude. (Pretty sure no anime studio can, not even Ghibli.) They have to have partners to fund and outsource a lot of those bits of making a big theatrical film, and they all get a say on how their money is spent. And they're always going to err on the side of caution with regards to what makes them money. And in this case, that comes in the form of keeping iconic characters recognizable. Japanese fans can get really fuckin' mad/petulant anytime you so much as deviate from established art styles, or hire new voice actors to play old characters, or even give the wrong characters a boy/girlfriend.

I remember this one manga... Actually, no, I had to google it. Kannagi, it was one of those comics that was taking off in popularity, the main female lead was every hardcore otaku's favorite, but then the author gave her a boyfriend and the fandom rioted. They all but burned the character in effigy and the book went from a huge high to complete obscurity within weeks.

I see your point about Anno not being an innocent party in all this, but I see it more as "Goddamn otaku, if we don't keep producing every kind of conceivable merch of these characters exactly as they are for the next fifty years we're not going to meet our bottom line."

The specific example I was thinking of when writing this, was Tomino and Amuro Ray in Gundam. In the original show, he had Amuro hook up with Sayla Mass. Then IRL stuff kept Sayla's voice actress from coming back in the sequel Zeta Gundam, so Tomino gave Amuro a new girlfriend to fill Sayla's role in the story, Beltorchika. And people were *pissed*, specifically Gundam's female fans. They hated that this new slut came around to tempt their pure Amuro with her feminine wiles. (Don't fuck with Amuro X Char OTP.) So to placate fans, Beltorchika disappeared from the next sequel, Char's Counterattack, and was replaced with another girlfriend, Chan. Who got summarily killed for being Amuro's girlfriend. Which is pretty clearly not something Tomino wanted to do when in the novelization of CCA, Beltorchika is still there, and plays such an important part of the story that the story is named after her "Beltorchika's Children". But you gotta keep the fans happy because they're the ones putting food on your table.

Wait, did Anno actually say that the Eva pilots are still 15 in the movie hell future and haven't aged? Misato at least looks older to me.

I can see Shinji still being effectively 15 since he was stuck in limbo or whatever during the time skip. (It's been so long I forget the details.) If Asuka, Rei, etc have all been doing their thing for 15 years then they should definitely be older? Right?

Asuka talked about pilots not aging in the previous movie. It's admittedly easy to miss because the whole thing about putting you in Shinji's perspective and overwhelming you with a strange new situation. Misato and almost everyone else age because they're not pilots.

Also many of the pilots are special cases that have some other situation going on. If the manga epilogue that ties into the Rebuild movies is drawing on unrevealed movie setting info, then Mari (spoiler from the manga that may or may not be relevant for the Rebuild movies) is as old as Gendo. And the Rei in Q is I think the 9th, unless I misremembering an extra pun on Q/急 that didn't actually happen. Kaoru is obviously another deal entirely.

It does seem odd to worry about backlash tbh, considering "it makes the fans mad" is a core tenet of the Evangelion brand

Yeah no matter what you think about third movie , it does not seem to have been made to avoid backlash.

I think they're basically doing what they want to do. (Obviously nothing is made without considering a potential audience, etc...)
