Elemental Who Would Win!

The Loch Ness Monster is a "monster" in name only. In reality, good ol' Vanessa may be a bit shy, but she's a total sweetie when you get to know her. She makes killer seafood soups, but unfortunately for her I think Draygon is a bit bigger of a shrimp than she's used to frying. Draygon's belly may be exposed, but it's at least protected by her claws. On the other hand, her overly long, exposed neck makes for a very easy target for a tail whip.

As for the other match, my intial reaction is to just go with Ifrit just based off of some lazy assumptions of the power scales here. However, Rachel appears to be in the perfect age bracket to be a JRPG party member, and FF summons don't have a very good track record when it comes to standing up against playable characters, so I'm gonna call this one a wash unless someone has a more compelling argument.

Nessie is unknowable and therefore, unbeatable. Amber, being a sane human being, would flee at the first sign of Ifrit's summoning.

Ifrit and Draygon win.
Second Card

Focalor

latest

Focalor is a boss from the video game Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. He comes from demonology and is the forty-first of the 72 goetic demons in the Lesser Key of Solomon. It is sort of a turtle centaur thing that can go into it’s body and spin around or fly at enemies at high speed. When it is near death, it destroys it’s body by ramming the player at high speed and exploding (all the bosses in this game have a “death finale” attack as they die).

Official description:

A demon who can control water at will has made its home in an underground channel. In a waterway known as the source of all life, Focalor feeds upon everything it finds. Focalor's body is covered in a shell of water so densely packed, it cannot be pierced by steel blades. Even the Zangetsuto cannot make a dent in its armor! Your only hope is to force Focalor to use its desperate, final attack, "Death Finale".

This is what the battle looks like.

VS

Katara

Katara.png

Katara is one of the protagonists from Avatar: The Last Airbender. A waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe, she joins Aang, the Avatar, on his quest to stop the assault of the antagonistic Fire Nation along with her brother Sokka. The only waterbender of her tribe, Katara is kind, generous and often acts as the patient parent of Team Avatar, though she can be motivated to violence and even must overcome her desire for vengeance against her mother’s killer. She furthers her bending education with the Northern Water Tribe after proving herself to Aang’s conservative teacher Master Pakku. Pakku even deems Katara skilled enough to continue Aang’s waterbending education, making her one of Aang’s three main teachers in the series.

Katara is extremely skilled at waterbending, as well as the art of ice bending. In addition, she was tricked into learning one of the most horrific bending arts, bloodbending, which controls a human body by controlling the blood and water within the body. However, while she has the knowledge, she’s used it only twice; once when being coerced to use it to save her friend’s life and once when she almost took revenge on her mother’s killer. A powerful technique, she generally refuses to use it on moral grounds. An ability she uses more often is a healing power that can come with water bending which cannot stop fatal injuries but can heal burns and bleeding, and relieve sickness and can even overcome brainwashing. But waterbending is her strongest skill and varied, as she’s shown to control other liquids, fog and even can bend mud (with the help of an earthbender).

Third Card

T-1000

latest

The T-1000 is a robot from the future. Created by the artificial intelligence Skynet, it was developed to replace the T-800 as a form of robotic assassin. Sent from the future to the past to kill John Connor, it impersonated a police officer and managed to outwit many humans into thinking it was a helpful human cop (no such thing, man). Tenacious and seemingly unstoppable, it proved superior to the T-800 on a technical level but was eventually defeated and destroyed in a vat of molten metal.

The T-1000 is far superior to most terminator robots due to it using a mimetic polyalloy; essentially it’s entire body is made of liquid metal. This means conventional attacks such as guns and fists are ineffective. However, extreme hot and cold have proven to work though even then, it needs to be in huge amounts. The T-1000 can also change shape. Usually to human forms, though it has turned into simple things such as floors and can turn its arms into bladed weapons, though it is incapable of complex designs, like machines.

Katara. Her innovations in waterbending are legend. She's a threat with even an eyedropper's worth.

As for the 2nd... T-1000. It's like they say, beware the true believer. They will not bother with a preamble or monologue. They will just kill.

Katara has enough tools in her kit to deal with a mean ol' water demon. Especially when its main defense is... made of water. And even though Katara wouldn't want to outright kill something if she doesn't have to, it seems like she'd probably frustrate it to the point where it's gonna self-destruct on its own.

And while I'm all for unconventional ways to win a match against something with superior raw force, I can't think of a dang thing Ronnie could do to slow down a T-1000.

Ronnie wins in my heart, but unless he finds a zipline across a lake of molten metal he's not making it out of this alive. T-1000 wins here pretty decisively.

As for Focalor vs. Katara, I'm gonna have to give this one a good think. Katara is quite accomplished as a waterbender, but Focalor seems to have some rudimentary bending abilities himself, along with terrifying speed and power.

Though actually if his armor is just made of armor then that'd barely be an obstacle to Katara...

Hmm...

I know it's my pick but even I don't think Focalor's armor is impenetrable. Or maybe it is but it can't be maintained for long.

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
Katara Vs. Focalor would probably be a pretty close battle actually. I question the games assertion that he can't be pierced by blades when he can be by a whip. But even so, it's covered in water and I feel like Katara can work with that. Both seem to control water and Focalor has the advantage of being crazy fast when it wants to. It wouldn't be an easy battle for Katara. But she would win. She has a variety of bending tactics under her belt and a good bender excels as versatility and improvisation so I think even if she can't straight finish him, she can drive him to his desperation attack and survive it.

T-1000 would just be at the other end of the zipline with a blade.

Hoo boy, BOTH Katara and T-1000 win unanimously!

Final round of round one! And no one will even be eliminated yet! Yeah, we are in this for the long haul!

Fourth Card

Ultros

360

Ultros is a recurring villain in the video game Final Fantasy VI. Initially, Ultros met the Returners, a group of heroic rebels, on a river and got into a fight with them. After that, for petty revenge, Ultros repeatedly followed the Returners with the goal of upsetting their plans. His misadventures includes a plan to disrupt an opera and being beaten up by his own portrait. His battle with the Returners ended with his defeat despite the help of his powerful friend Typhon/Chupon (depending on the translation). After that, he ended up as a receptionist at a monster fighting stadium, too busy paying off debts to antagonize them.

Ultros is lecherous, smart-mouthed and mischievous. Despite his genuine threats to eat our protagonists, his is seen more of a nuisance rather than a real threat through most of the game. Despite that, he’s no slouch in the power department. His abilities include blinding ink, a tentacle attack, magical brush (I don’t remember what this does) and a host of elemental and debuff magics. He is weak to fire and lightning attacks.

VS

Ghost Leviathan

1000

From Subnautica wiki:

The Ghost Leviathan is a leviathan class fauna species and adult form of the Ghost Leviathan Juveniles. It is the second largest aggressive creature of Subnautica (the largest being the Sea Dragon Leviathan and the third being the Ghost Leviathan Juvenile).

Three adult Ghost Leviathans spawn on the map (not counting the infinite number found in the Crater Edge): two in the Grand Reef, and one in the Northern Blood Kelp Zone.

If the player enters the Crater Edge, a single adult Ghost Leviathan spawns in. If the player stays in the Crater Edge for 40 seconds, a second Ghost Leviathan will spawn. If the player stays in the area for another 40 seconds, a third and final Ghost Leviathan spawns in. When/If the player kills them, they will respawn. They will all pursue the player until the player returns to the playable area, upon which they will all retreat

To attack a target, it will spiral up and charge. When charging, it will open up its mouth and make a loud, echoing screech. If it successfully attacks, it will do 84% damage to the player and swim some distance away, as if losing interest.

Adults are able to push the Cyclops and either drag it, or overturn it. If the player is walking around the Cyclops when the Adult begins to push (for example, if they are trying to put out fires caused by an attack), and the Leviathan rolls the submarine over, the player can be killed instantly upon colliding with the walls or ceiling. When killed, the Ghost Leviathans that are within the Crater do not respawn. However, the adults that reside within the Crater Edge will continue to respawn.

Fifth Card

Kapp’n

latest
From Animal Crossing Wiki

Kapp'n (カッペイ Kappei?, うんてんしゅ Untenshu) is a green turtle (Kappa in the Japanese versions) that features in the Animal Crossing series as a driver of various forms of transport. He has been known to row boats, drive taxis, and drive buses.

Kapp'n himself is a sailor by nature, referring frequently to his life on the sea and speaking in stereotypical pirate tones. He has also expressed a fondness for women and singing old sea shanties.

According to Katrina, his singing irritates his wife to the extent that he is not allowed to be on the island.

VS

Mister Fantastic

Reedr.jpg

Reed Richards was a brilliant polymath scientist who created an experimental rocket. When the test was to be halted, he convinced his college friend Ben Grimm, his girlfriend Sue Storm and Sue’s little brother Johnny Storm to steal the experimental rocket to prove it worked. During the initial flight, the rocket was bombarded with cosmic rays which resulted in the four getting super powers. Reed Richard discovered his body was now elastic which he could control, making his body longer and change to any form he needs. He would become the leader of the team, now called the Fantastic Four and his scientific acumen developing the team’s various tools. He would help fight various threats, many cosmic in nature.

Reed’s stretching powers are tremendously versatile. He has been known to bound himself into a rubber ball to launch himself at enemies, turning himself into simple objects (parachutes, rafts), and even making his body so nearly fluid as to squeeze through pipes. His rubbery body makes him nearly invulnerable to conventional physical force such as punches or kicks, save for the most powerful entities. However, as amazing as his stretching powers are, Reed considers his super powers secondary to his super intelligence, able to use his fathomless knowledge to improvise plans in seemingly impossible situation and seems to be able to create machines and inventions far beyond even most of his super scientist contemporaries. Reed generally has a moral leaning but is known for getting tunnel-visioned, eschewing his loved ones when focused on his work and even at times creating their threats. Reed can be cold and calculating at times but with his family by his side, tends to make the correct decisions.

While Ultros definitely wins it on personality, these are both sea creatures that attack by body checking you. Ultros is generously maybe 4 or 5 meters of debatably-an-octopus and slaps with a single tentacle, possibly after wasting a bit of time flirting and making puns. A ghost leviathan gets right to it and body slams interlopers with kind of an absurd amount of mass moving at a surprisingly fast clip.

And my understanding of Reed Richards is that in addition to being superhero levels of good in a fight, he's also exactly the sort of total dick who would sucker punch a random cab driver he had some petty grievance against or abduct him for mad science purposes or whatever.

Wow, some lopsided matchups here.
Ultros is a born loser. Ghost Leviathan hands down takes the win.

Kapp'n wouldn't even bother with this, so Reed wins via default.

Yeah this is another case where I didn't quite understand this game. Oh well! I'm going to say Kapp'n would entice Mr Fantastic with a journey to a place with new species and make him go out of the ring. Sure why not.

And Ghost Leviathan, but I do want to watch this fight.

I'm gonna go against the flow on the first match here... sure, the leviathan has a big edge over Ultros in sheer mass and power, but in the end it's just a really big peeved off fish. Our octopus friend, on the other hand, comes from a world of fantasy and magic, and has a lot more tools at his disposal. He'd probably be pretty freaked out by the leviathan's first charge but, like a regular ol' octopus, instinctively squirt out an ink smokescreen that could make the big fella miss. And then, well... an experienced version of Ultros knows how to cast things like Confusion and Acid Rain and Haste and Stone and even the ridiculously-dangerous-in-the-water Megavolt and Thundaga. I don't think our tentacled friend would come out unscathed, but I'm thinking he could cause enough damage and general disorientation to cause a huge ol' fish to retreat.

As for the other match, it's hard to come up with a scenario where they actually fight, but I guess I'll say Kap'n annoys Richards with sea shanties until being picked up and tossed out of the ring by a long stretchy arm.

Relax. 1) frankly it's more fun to pick characters that are fun than "I'm in it to win it". You don't get nothing if your pick wins.

But more than that, I always find throwing in non-combatants is key. Because it's also fun knowing these characters who don't fight have certain advantages. Many characters, when faced with a non-combatant, won't fight them. So it's nice to think about how it gets to a "win" in having the characters meet. Who gets the better of who in some capacity. What that capacity is can be up to you, with the knowledge of who these characters are. If it was only fight nuts and you threw in Saitama from One Punch Man were the premise is it doesn't matter who it is, Saitama wins in one punch. But if Saitama meets some guy who challenges him to a game of charades, he might not win (and it would be in character for him to take up that if he likes the other character enough). Charm can go a long way!

Olli

(he/him)
Unpopular opinion, but I'm going to say Ultros is going to take it. The reasoning is, he's sentient and wily, and the Ghost Leviathan may be big and spooky, but it's a beast. Ultros is easily able to set up a scheme where he taunts his opponent, the Leviathan charges him, maybe hits or maybe not, but then the Leviathan does his usual trick of moving away from the fight and, get it, the Leviathan goes out of bounds. Ultros wins by doing nothing except taking one non-lethal hit at most.

As for the second fight, Mr Fantastic is going to gently lift Kap'n outside of the combat zone with his stretchy arms and collect the win. No need to expend any further energy into this bout.

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
Sugar, I forgot to vote.

I feel like Ultros vs Ghost Leviathan would be a tough cool battle and I think it would go like this; Ultros would start it, because that's the shit he pulls but the second things go wrong, he's going to out, despite his magic power putting him on par with it. Because on par is the key word... he's not going to fight a battle unless he's confident he's punching down and when things start to go south, he's gone. Give it to the Ghost.

And my understanding of Reed Richards is that in addition to being superhero levels of good in a fight, he's also exactly the sort of total dick who would sucker punch a random cab driver he had some petty grievance against or abduct him for mad science purposes or whatever.
Reed can be a dick but I don't think he'd punish him over a petty grievance. Reed's dickiness comes more from a coldness and just not being a responsible guy sometimes. He's more a "lock himself in his room to make a death ray and is confused why people aren't using it for peaceful purposes." That said, it's more likely that Reed would tolerate him because he is patient or would invent something to make Kapp'n's life better as a flex. I don't know how Kapp'n would take that but personally I'll put that as a pacifist win for Reed.

This is a battle of very different sizes. Almost Brilliant is the size of a small bird and the Green Giant is a giant. But Green Giant is powerful but not known for violence or hurting people. I have no idea about Almost Brilliant, who apparently knows (or at least has access to) all knowledge. I have no idea if Almost Brilliant is helpful, mischievous or even… evil? I really don’t know this character’s moral barometer or motives, which seems important so maybe @Violentvixen can share.

Note that both have a win-loss score of one loss and no wins, meaning whoever loses this round is out of the game.

Mothra

Earth Ninja

5835_1.jpg

If you thought there was a pronounced size difference in the last match, buckle up. This time a human ninja fights a titanic monster that causes storms with it’s wing flaps. Earth Ninja meanwhile, while a skilled fighter, uses his ability to hide and take his enemies by surprise. Is there any way that he can pull such a plan to take out one of the largest monsters in the world?

Currently, Both competitor are at one wins and no losses so regardless of the victor, both participants will still be in the game.

The Green Giant seems like he would have an advantage in the dust arena, given his attunement with the earth, but the Giant's main deal is growing stuff and dust is famously not good for that purpose. The smart bird figures out a way to confuse the frustrated giant out of the arena.

Earth ninja definitely punches above his weight class, and he's got plenty of tricks in his bag, but I figure he lacks the raw power to significantly damage a kaiju-level entity. Mothra flaps her wings to raise a dust storm and wins by submission.

In the first match I know nothing of this bird and cannot really picture the Jolly Green Giant fighting anyone, but broadly speaking, he is made of/the caretaker of edible plant matter, and birds are like... really good at bypassing the defenses of plants to eat the bits they like. Like thorns and spiciness and stuff are all specifically evolved so birds can just get in there and have what they want and everything else is gonna be deterred.

Meanwhile I am quite familiar with the films for the latter pairing and yeah there just is no contest here at all.

So team air it is.

He is Jolly but if he is perturbed by a little bird constantly buzzing his face then maybe the bird could trick the Giant into going out of bounds. Or maybe the bird could steal some of the leaves that make up the Giant's outfit and force him to cover up and shuffle off the battlefield out of shame.

Earth ninja definitely punches above his weight class, and he's got plenty of tricks in his bag, but I figure he lacks the raw power to significantly damage a kaiju-level entity.
About the only strategy Earth Ninja could use that I think would be effective is to poison Mithra but I don't know how he would accomplish that.

...

A though just occurred to me - maybe Earth Ninja could get to Mothra through the twin fairy priestesses (Shobijin) who accompany her. Maybe attacking or poisoning them would affect Mothra. It does seem like the type of dirty trick that he would pull.

Imperiling the two tiny women to attack or manipulate Mothra has traditionally very much never worked out for anyone... and I kinda feel like "just these characters, they don't get to bring friends" rule would disallow for such tactics anyway.
