I’m pretty sure Sue can deal with a wolf what blows hard. If you wanna get specific, force fields “as strong as steel” can specifically thwart his main offense, and she’s clever enough that a little wolf trickery or smooth talk isn’t gonna be enough to get him out of it.

On the second card, at first I was leaning toward the literal giant, but you know… he’s not a fighter. He’s a veggie farmer. I’m sure he can swing back if pushed, but against an opponent that fights hard and dirty I think he’ll be flummoxed. Ninja takes it, but it’s not an honorable victory.

Well, Big Bad Wolf was outsmarted multiple times by the pig using the cunning strategy of ... arriving an hour early. So you can see why trickery isn't the wolf's first option.

I don't see any reason why Invisible Woman would look if her forcefields are stronger than straw or sticks.

The Green Giant is depicted at a lot of different scales, but going with the bigger ones I'd assume that he could just stomp slightly to collapse whatever tunnels the Earth Ninja is using. The spears might hurt a bit, but that would just make Mr. Giant angrier at worst.

I'm going to say no matter how good the wolf can breathe, it cannot stand up to a cosmic forcefield. Invisible Woman.

The next match is trickier. I think the Earth Ninja would be sweating buckets by the end of this one but Jolly seems like a lover, not a fighter, and I don't think he's going to endure the precision attacks of the Earth Ninja.

Ben Grimm was a test pilot who took an experimental rocket into space at the behest of his best friend, Reed Richards. Along with Reed, Reed's girlfriend Sue and her brother Johnny, the four were bombarded with cosmic rays, granting each one astonishing powers. But Ben's transformation is the most tragic, having been turn into a monstrous goliath with stone-like skin. Increasing his self-loathing to a high degree, The Thing became a superhero but often a begrudging one early in his career, frustrating at being an outcast with a monstrous face. Over time, the Thing became a true blue hero, overcoming his own issues to show the gentle and heroic heart within. He's also a major celebrity and despite his own body issues, it the most recognizable and perhaps even beloved member of the superhero team, the Fantastic Four.

The Thing's strange body have given him fantastic super strength with few rivals in the Marvel Universe. But though there are more powerful beings then him, he's also shown not only unimaginable durability due to his powers but also a never-say-die attitude, often coming at foes who could have sworn he should have gone down by now. Even the arrogant battle maniac The Champion of the Universe was forced to concede to the Thing's tenacity due to the fact that while he "won" their battle, he had only won on a technicality and could not put the Thing down. His personality is sometimes abrasive but he's mellowed with age. Though often gruff and a little cynical, he also will go above and beyond to help others, even if he grumbles the entire time.

Titan is a recurring summon in the Final Fantasy series. No backstory is really provided for it in any of the games, except in most cases it has a humanoid form of some kind. Sometimes it looks more human (albeit musclebound) while others it looks like earth itself. Titan has appeared in most Final Fantasy games since III (not including VIII and X) as a summon the protagonists can use for a powerful attack.

His ultimate power is Gaia's Wrath, also called Fury of the Land and Earth's Fury. The power can do damage to all enemies on the ground. However, in most cases, enemies that are flying will not be damaged by the attack. Titan is named after the second order of divine being in Greek myth, that were eventually succeeded by the Gods.

Third Card

The Lich is a recurring monster in the Final Fantasy series. In the first game it is an evil force that threatens to destroy an entire town and it's populace by rotting the Earth beneath it. He is eventually defeated... twice (thanks to time travel). In most subsequent games, Liches alternate between being a "normal" monster, which means they recur, and a boss, powerful, unique, and a true threat to all. The Lich is a magical undead monster, usually taking on a skeletal form.

In fantasy in general, a lich is an undead creature, often a wizard who has transcended being a man and has transformed itself into an undead user of black magic. In the first game, it is capable of a number of magic spells including Slow, Hold, Sleep, Fira, Thundara, Blizzara, Haste and Sleepra and in it's younger form can even use Kill. It can also just straight up fist fight you, so beware.

The Plants in the game Plants vs. Zombies are just that... plants. But they each have varying powers to help combat an oncoming swarm of zombies. Most of them use projectiles though fumes and spores can be used. Some of them have elemental powers, some have other weird little tricks. There are 49 plants in all. Frankly, I never played the game so I don't know much more than that.

Not quite sure about the the relative power levels of the Thing vs Titan, so I'll pass on that for now.

As for the other match, I think my logic is simple: the Plants need to grow out of the ground, but the Lich can curse the ground itself, so the Plants lose. Lich wins. No zombies necessary.

Is Titan being controlled by a Summoner?

Is Lich fighting all of the Plants or just 4-9 at once? In the game how many total plants can you use at once?

Doesn't it take time for his corruption to spread? Would that really be a factor here? Wouldn't this take place on a neutral battleground? And speaking of - doesn't the location limit which plants can participate?

The Thing is tougher than most, and while he has been bested before, it takes either something that's completely outside of his wheelhouse (like telepathy) or someone who hits hard enough to be universally known and feared (like The Hulk, and even he has lost to Benji on occasion). Titan may be strong, but he's just a powerful recurring mook, exactly the kind that Ben finds challenging but also enjoyable to crush.

The second fight is a hard call. The way I see it, the Lich is essentially the final boss of a Plants vs Zombies game - the exact thing the Plants are known for fighting. It's a coin toss, more or less - and this time I'll give it to the Lich.

Assuming Thing's fists deal earth-elemental damage, Titan takes this one.

Whether Lich wins depends, as always, on whether he casts NUKE on the first round. Failing that, the match goes to Plants.

Is Lich fighting all of the Plants or just 4-9 at once? In the game how many total plants can you use at once?

I realized a few weeks ago that I had meant this to be the PvZ crew. I've never played PvZ2. That said, in the actual game, you are limited by the number of different plants you can use, but the total number of plants is limited only by terrain. The intent was for one of each to be in play.

Some of the plants, such as the Sunflower, deal no damage, and several more are single-use, such as the Cherry Bombs. There are enough single-use nukes to give Lich a run for his money: in-game, they're primarily balanced by the long cooldown between uses.

Yeah, if Lich was just a big undead monster, that's what the Plants are designed to fight, so I'd give it to them. But the whole reason Lich is showing up in the Earth Element bracket is it's FF1 Earth crystal affiliation, where its whole *deal* was basically making the earth "rot" and thus crops wither. I'm not super familiar with PvZ, but unless some specialized plant has some kind of powerful "un-curse" ability, I think Lich takes it.

Thing vs Titan is a tough call. Both can dish out and take a ton of blunt-force damage.I guess I'll give the edge to Thing on account of sheer tenacity, whereas as a Summon, Titan is basically just clocking in to a job and may not be quite as committed in the end.

One thing I'll say for today's cards, while we run into a lot of situations in these tournaments where one or both combatants might not be so much up for a traditional fight, all four of these entrants will *absolutely* be down to go at each other.

Plants versus Lich still feels like a toss up to me. But I think the numbers advantage will work in the Plants favor. It will be a brutal slugfest of a match but the Plants survive just long enough to outlast and defeat the Fiend of Earth.

I really don't think Titan will be able to absorb Thing's attacks. I think Titan could win if he had enough distance and stun-locked Thing with repeated Wraths/Furys. But I think The Thing has a counter for that:
Although he very rarely does so, the Thing is capable of performing super-human leaps several stories high.
So if Thing leaps horizontally he can get over Titan's attack and avoid the stun. And here is where we have to acknowledge a certain aspect of clobberin' time - clobberin' space / range. And once that jump has taken care of that for The Thing then I think it's all over for Titan. The Thing wins via clobberin'.

(He/Him)
Summons just come and go. I feel like that means that Titan has a chance to get a hit in before poofing away. The Thing can take that. But if the Titan sticks around, this is a much tougher battle. Still, powerful as Titan is, it's the kind of threat the Thing has faced before; he has fought Gorgon who can create earthquakes by stomping the Earth and all sorts of giant monsters. I give this one to the Thing.

The next is a tight battle. That many plants seems sort of overpowered for this kind of much in sheer numbers but the Lich and just slowly destroy the Earth. It's really a time battle; can the Lich off all the plants before they get their licks in? I'm going to say it's a very tight race but I feel like the plants' HP, though impressive, probably isn't as much as an undead wizard. Point to Lich.

Purple

(She/Her)
I'm not entirely convinced that The Thing and Titan aren't actually just the same guy, but the latter tends to just show up do a thing and leave immediately, and the former only does that whenever they try to do a film adaptation, but otherwise has quite a lot of staying power.

And, setting aside the obvious problem that these are supposed to be one on one fights, no bringing allies along, the whole deal with Plants Vs. Zombies is that these are roughly evenly matched forces, but a Lich is like a zombie but extra tough, and, most importantly, capable of casting spells at range, easily killing the squishy sunflowers needed to keep the economy of the plants running. It's a bit like having your healers drop early and not having phoenix downs.

Toph Beifong is an Earth Bender from the Earth Kingdom in the television series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Born blind and raised in nobility, Toph was taught by her parents that her blindness mere disability and kept her concealed. On her own she encountered blind badgermoles, creatures of the Earth, and learned earthbending. While she played the role of perfect little girl at home, she became an incredibly skilled bender, defeating grown ups with power and cleverness. Soon after meeting Aang, she ran away from home to train him as well as oppose the imperious Fire Nation.

Toph is a prodigy in Earth bending. Not only is her general bending powerful, she is capable of reading where her opponents are by sensing movement through the Earth with her bare feet. Toph even manages to create a new form of bending when through sheer force of will is capable of controlling and bending metal, which wasn’t heard of until that time. Despite her noble upbringing and her deep knowledge of etiquette, Toph prefers to be crass, belligerent and direct. Though she is headstrong and powerful, she’s also proven to be a wily fighter, often taunting her enemies and even sometimes her friends.

Anderson was born on June 8, 2137 to Ursula and Paul Anderson, a nurse and flight mechanic respectively, in the city of London on Earth, and was the last of three children by his parents' second marriage. Anderson is one of the Alliance's most decorated special forces operatives, and the first to graduate from the N7 Special Forces program at Arcturus Station, serving with honor in the First Contact War.

Anderson is a veteran soldier and a high-ranking military commander at the start of the series. Over the course of the series, he is promoted several times and proves himself to be a skilled strategist. He is never a player character but he is a trusted ally of Shepard, the lead character and also is voiced by Keith David. That counts for a lot.

latest
Stone Man is a Robot Master created by Doctor Wily to defeat the fighting robot Mega Man. Stone Man guards… some sort of quarry or something. According to the wiki he just hangs out with Guts Man and I like that for him. Also it says he hates stingy people. I have no idea how that enters into the game play.

Stone Man is a robot seemingly made of large blocks of stone. He uses the ability Power Stone to send to large rocks at his opponents. More than that, he can jump very high and land on foes but when he does he falls apart into a pile of bricks. Sounds bad but he’s temporarily invulnerable at this time. That and he can pull himself together afterwards. That said, he can be defeated with napalm bombs.

Eartha Kitt is an American singer and actress known for playing Catwoman in the old Batman tv series as well as Yzma in The Emperor’s New Groove. She also was the singer of the iconic holiday song “Santa Baby”, which I assume is the tale of Santa falling into the fountain of youth. Orsen Welles once called her the most exciting woman in the world and that motherfucker doesn’t like anything.

She was also an activist, even letting her career take a hit for being vocally anti-Vietnam war at a Washington luncheon. A few years later she made a comeback in the play Timbuktu! for which she won her first Tony award. She was also a prominent LGBTQ advocate, supporting same sex marriage as a civil rights issue.

Toph may be a cunning fighter with magic powers, but David Anderson is a soldier and a special operative to boot. He won't hesitate to put a bullet in Toph's head from 1000 meters, or call in a bomber to drop napalm or her or something.

Eartha Kitt seems more like a lover and not as much of a fighter, at least in the "put 'em up" spirit. Stone Robot wins, even if he's not the most impressive opponent otherwise.

It's very hard to sneak up on Toph, which is surely what David is going to try to do. David is a moral dude, to my recollection, and probably wouldn't try to murder a 12 year old (though, to be fair, it's been a long time since I've played these games). Plus, he'll come at her with metal. Big mistake.

Sorry Eartha. It is implied Stone Man has a personality but I don't think he's going to be swayed from his programming.

I don’t mean to harp on it but it still says Lich and Plants up there as of right now. I think it’s supposed to be Lich and Thing but that’s just me skimming.

Anyway, I’m assuming the good captain Anderson isn’t afforded an entire fleet or other heavy artillery in this sort of contest, so while his strategic acumen may keep him in the game for longer than most humans with no extraordinary powers, in the end I do think the fact that any weapons he has on him are likely to be metal is gonna be enough of a liability that Toph will be able to handle whatever he comes at her with and eventually lay him out with a good ol’ rock to the noggin.

As for the other match, it seems like the only hope the talented miss Kitt has is if music can soothe the savage… bot. I dunno, if he “hangs out” with Guts maybe he has a little sense of culture and leisure? Though that pair seems more likely to be into booze and metal than wine and jazz. I don’t even know how I’d want the meta-game this, since Toph would wipe the floor with Stone or become good buds with Eartha, either of which could be a fun time. Abstain I guess.

Specifically the wiki says they watch movies and drink oil and I have to ask 1) does Wily know about this? That his robots are just watching movies? and 2) I guess not booze. Not Futurama rules, I guess.

Being voiced by Keith David, while pretty great, is really no match for being able to tell the ground to beat someone up, so Toph.

Also I'm pretty sure all Mega Man robots might have to follow the laws of robotics, but even if they don't, Eartha Kitt is known to be both crafty and possessed of wiles. That's all Dr. Wily has going, and so far as I know, he's never sang or been Catwoman.

Assuming Mr. Captain Anderson Sir can't call in any reinforcements or whatever, I'm going to assume that the kid who can bend metal will put this sci-fi soldier to rest. Toph

As for the second match, uh... Stone Man's not smart, per se, but he's pretty good at jumping on top of people. I'm not sure Eartha has anything in her immediate kit that could easily damage stone, let alone the ability to improvise something while being chased like that by a tireless machine. Gonna have to hand this to Stone Man.

The Sun is attacking Mario! How? Why? Who can say. This Sun, which I can only assume is not the actual sun, has no known origin. Even the Mario wiki has nothing to tell us. He’s about as big as big Mario. Even the official Mario guide in Japanese is not clear, save that acknowledging he IS a “Celestial Body”. The only Mario game he appears in as a foe is Super Mario Bros. 3.

The Sun is relentless, following Mario and swooping down from the sky in a U-shaped arc. He is, however, moving in a predictable pattern and can be taken out with shells and hammers. Despite his weaknesses and predictability, he is a scary foe and full of hot rage.

The pup, heavily injured, was provided with the best veterinary care possible and was made part of the evil fighting organization SEES. He was even given a special suit and can fight with knives.

Koromaru is not only loyal, he is known for his nearly human-level intelligence. He even watches TV, with his favourite show being The True Battles of Real Men, a non-fiction series about tales of brave people. Koromaru’s powers allow him to resist most ailments and completely block poison and can use fire magic, as well as numerous other spells. Here’s a list of his skills if that helps.

Ghastly Wail Instantly kills all foes who are fearful.

Brave Blade Deals severe Slash damage to one foe.

Stagnant Air Doubles ailment susceptibility to everyone for three turns.

High Counter Counter physical attacks (high odds). (50% chance)

Sharp Student Lowers odds of sustaining critical damage.

Human Torch

latest

Johnny Storm was invited to help his sister and her romantic partner steal and test an experimental rocket. They (along with pilot Ben Grimm) were transformed by cosmic radiation, each granted with special powers. Johnny gained the ability to control fire and can even fly after engulfing his body in flame, leading him to call himself the Human Torch. Though mostly working with his family, Johnny has taken part in his share of crime fighting solo but usually with smaller scale super criminals. With his family, he’s fought a large number of cosmic threats.

Johnny is known for being the most immature member of the family, a hothead who delights in his superheroic fame and is the only most likely to make a public gaffe. That said, he is also known to be quite charismatic. He’s more of an impulsive daredevil, often likely to fly head first into a trap. Despite this, his long career has given him valuable experience both with his powers (which he has learned to make more versatile) and with how to approach threats. He has figured out how to use his wits and while he isn’t quite as smart as his sister or Reed Richards, his defiant attitude belies someone who a lifetime of crime and GOD fighting has turned him into an A-Tier superhero. Though known for flying and throwing fireballs, he can also control fire in his line of sight (including making it more or less intense) and can absorb fire and even plasma. His most powerful attack is his Nova Flame, where he uses up the entirety of his power for a time to create an omnidirectional field of superhot fire, like a human bomb, though afterward he is usually too tired to continue fighting.

VS

Iroh

General_Iroh.jpg

Iroh is a powerful firebender and a retired general of the Fire Nation. As a younger man, Iroh was a powerful and prideful general but during the siege against Ba Sing Se, his son died in combat. This caused Iroh to lose his taste for his nation’s imperialism, which is controlled by his brother Ozai. Decades later, Iroh was tasked with watching over Zuko, Ozai’s son, and trying to mentor him into being a better person. In secret, he also was a high ranking member of a secret society called the White Lotus that values wisdom and above nationality and along with powerful older benders across the world covertly (and later overtly) rebelled against the Fire Nation.

Following his retirement, Iroh put value into empathy and kindness, trying to convince his nephew not to give into rage. For most Fire Benders, rage is the source of their fire bending but Iroh discovered in fact vitality was the true core. Having learned from dragons, he’s mastered an older form of fire bending and can even breath fire. He has also learned (and perhaps created) lightning bending, a variation of fire bending that he taught to Ozai and Ozai’s daughter Azula. Even without bending powers, he is physically powerful and a skilled fighter who, when facing an army of depowered benders, was easily able to defeat them. He tends to avoid combat when he can help it, and is more likely to talk things out when possible. If not, then he can really kick ass.

Are we applying HP scaling to these battles? If not then I think Koromaru can figure out Angry Sun's pattern before taking too much damage. And once Koromaru has the pattern down then I think he can avoid it while doing enough damage in enough different ways (i.e. so that it doesn't matter if Angry Sun can absorb fire attacks) that he'll come out on top.

(Can Fire Mario's fireballs hurt Angry Sun? I can't remember if I've ever tried using them against it.)
