I thought this WAS E3? Like I thought whatever this thing was today is what E3 is now? I don't know

Anyway it's like 7 months away, I'm sure we'll be seeing more. I saw one person on Twitter say that compared to Berserk it looks like a dogshit version of Berserk, and I get where they're coming from, but also it looks cool so screw that guy. It almost looks like it has a bit of all of the From catalogue aesthetics-wise, plus new stuff. From Software game!!!! arahghjasdjhakl

The art style doesn't really do much for me, and the graphics don't really look very impressive. But those are the compromises you have to make when you have to have parity with last-gen consoles when your game is (supposedly) a big open world. I'm hoping for the best, but I'm expecting the worse. Hopefully the world feels full of stuff and not empty.

There's a type of online guy that likes Berserk a lot and any time you mention dark, fantasy, or dark fantasy they go "Yeah, but have you read Berserk!?"

This looks tonally tiresome as anything that From puts out when cut to suit the needs of a trailer, but the heavy Germanic heroic myth influence is nice to see in the face of the constant inundation of Viking revival media of suspect political subtext, while this looks to take a more continental European purview via Nibelungenlied or what have you (Brünhild is like, right there)--equally rife and a historically proven commodity for misuse, mind, but not as commonly defaulted to as an aesthetic and branch of the shared root legends in contemporary culture. I'm hopeful it can etch out a distinct character for itself through that aspect in the From pantheon.

From has added significantly to any fantasy genre they choose to work in. I'm sure they'll do something brilliant with the germanic theming. I'm not worried.

"GRRM"

Oh wait nevermind.

who knows the depth of GRRM's input, but among all else from ice and fire, the world is robust. This game is unlikely to have much in the way of explicit interpersonal relationships, or really "other people", so I'm not too concerned.

I hope his involvement was along the lines of "you should do a valkyrie game, maybe put some dragons in" and not actually contributing to words on the page. But regardless I'm (mostly) goofing. From has shown a defter hand at game narrative than most and I'm sure if anyone could navigate GRRM's idiosyncrasies it would be them.

My understanding of GRRM's involvement is that he mostly sketched out the history and lore of the game world, whereas From Software is writing the stuff that actually happens in the game itself. (To lazy to look up the source right now, take with a grain of salt.)

According to Miyazaki, the majority of Martin's work on Elden Ring has been fleshing out an era prior to the one that will be explored by players, and includes establishing the world's history and mythology. In the interview with IGN, Miyazaki compared Martin's contribution to a dungeon master's guidebook. This writing may be to Elden Ring what J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion is to The Lord of the Rings.

I'm very excited to ride a horse and fight those gnarly looking bosses! Everything about it looks pretty great to me.

For whatever reason, I thought this was next gen only. I kind of wrote it off as something I might play way down the road. The trailer had me briefly considering getting a PS5, until the end of the trailer surprised my by listing PS4.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to fighting some arm monsters and beasts and animated pots or whatever.

One thing no one has mentioned yet is that the horse can double jump.

Any game that has a horse and then has it double jump is instant game of year. Like sure...lore, and stuff. That's neat. But did you see the horse double jump?!!? That rules!

This is the correct takeaway from the trailer. GIVE ME THE DOUBLE JUMPING HORSE

It is pretty funny that between this game's announcement and now George RR Martin's brand power has tanked thanks to stuff other people wrote, but that's life for ya

The potbumblers are very good but I think the most exciting thing yet is the return of ants to From games.

I'd love for those werewolf knight looking things to be friendly or playable cuz otherwise I see something like the first portion of the Ashes of Ariandel DLC where I explore an entire area without actually hurting anything.

What do we think about the open world? The trailer shows horse riding and open plains, and I think they've used the words "open world" in press materials. I don't dislike open world, but I'm the type of guy who will be very happy to never play a mediocre one. I still expect the game to be incredibly appealing, but I also question whether an open world is actually a net benefit to this type of game design.

I expect somewhat more open hub areas between dungeons. I don't see Miyazaki adding a bunch of lazy sidequests or whatever. I trust him to know what he's doing.

I believe the verbiage used in press/interviews at this point is "open-field" (in explicit contrast to being open-world). My guess is this means it will have some larger, more open areas than prior Fromsoft titles, but it will also deliberately try to avoid trite open-world design tropes.
