Eating Like An Earl - Talking Time's Top Sandwiches

Breakfast sandwiches are all good. My submission is rarely a breakfast item for me, and more of a nostalgia meal. Back in my youth, when my friends and I tended to partake of the devil's lettuce, a quick and easy grub was to fry an egg, throw it on white bread with mayo and a slice of cheddar cheese, and chow down.

I barely ever consume THC anymore but the sandwich is still great sober.

Yeah I’ll happily eat an Eggs Benedict any time of day, though it certainly makes a fine hearty breakfast. You can also often find fun variations these days, like a California one with avocado or smoked salmon Benedict.

The egg toast, though, was strictly breakfast, and I had one every morning alongside my cereal for years growing up. Though as a little kid I wasn’t into the fried egg white, so my dad made me a variation that was just runny yolk spread on toast. Fond memories of that.

Eating Epoch Extra - signature sandwich ingredient #5

We need some bread to put all of these ingredients on but I think that we should make a bold choice here and use a cheddar jalapeño bagel.
wIXco37.jpg

(The name jalapeño is Spanish for "from Xalapa" - which is the capital city of Veracruz, Mexico.

Cheddar cheese originates from the village of Cheddar in Somerset, southwest England.

The word bagel derives from the Yiddish word beygal, from the German dialect word beugel, meaning "ring" or "bracelet".)

Well, we've got the makings of a good sandwich here but I think it needs one final ingredient to tie everything together.

Now what could that be?

...

Wait, I know! It's ...

having a breakfast sandwich on one of those is my preferred way of eating both the bagel and the breakfast sammie.

The signature sandwich final ingredient. A meat that can integrate well with all of the other ingredients - roasted turkey

Now we combine these ingredients to create - @Daikaiju's favorite sandwich! Which is also part of our next entry.

Turkey had previously appeared here with its sandwich usage that stemmed from Thanksgiving leftovers. But turkey is consumed at other times of the year and that frequently occurs with the turkey as part of a sandwich. When used as a cold cut turkey is often specifically prepared for that purpose as either thin-sliced cuts of turkey (usually the breast) or highly-processed, packaged lunch meat.

@Alex @RT-55J and @Johnny Unusual didn't specify anything particular about their turkey sandwich preferences. But @WildcatJF likes his with lettuce, pickle and cheese.

And @Issun is also a bit more selective since he likes turkey & Havarti cheese.

@JBear likes a hot turkey.

Called more generically "hot meat" in my household, this is the meal you have the day after a Christmas or Thanksgiving turkey, consisting of leftover turkey meat on sandwich bread slathered in peas and gravy and usually accompanied by homemade fries.
I'll hold off in case my vote got folded in somewhere else, which I could totally see, but for the record, I would definitely say that one of the sandwiches on my list qualifies as "post thanksgiving". Love me some leftover turkey meat.
Oops. That's right. This really should have been included in entry #24 for Post Thanksgiving sandwiches. I think I might have gotten it confused with a Hot Brown sandwich.

(Also, I'm not sure if @Johnny Unusual meant the same thing with his other vote for 'hot turkey sandwich'.)

One was intended as a vote for a nice turkey with lettuce tomato etc (low on the list) and the other was meant for smothered in gravy and meant to be eaten with utensils. Like them both but very different eating experiences.

I love breakfast sandwiches. To be safe, my list had many different kinds just to be safe.

The mild creaminess of havarti really pairs well with turkey. Add some mayo, lettuce, and tomato and throw it all on some rye or sourdough bread and a side of good potato chips and a pickle slice. Then a beverage of your choice and that's one of the finest deli lunches you can get.

Eating Epoch Extra - signature sandwich

Our signature sandwich is missing one final "ingredient" - it needs a name. But what should we call it? Daikaiju's favorite? The Daikaiju? Those are both nice options but I think I have a better idea. I think we should call it ... The TurKaiju. Now what do you all think of that name?

Chicken is another popular poultry pick when it comes to sandwich ingredients. Most of the votes seem to be for fried chicken sandwiches of various varieties.

@Alex just likes chicken. @Issun likes his crispy. I also like fried chicken but my other favorite is the chicken, bacon & swiss sandwich - grilled or fried.

@nataeryn and @Lokii like pickle-brined chicken sandwiches - which is what Chick-fil-A makes (but Lokii prefers his without the gross corporate association).

@WildcatJF likes his chicken breaded and topped with cheese.

@JBear likes a chicken burger which is made of breaded ground chicken.

IMO, beef is about the least compelling thing you can put on a burger, but chicken is among the more appealing choices.

And @Alex likes his chicken on a biscuit for a chicken biscuit.

Just to be clear, i also don't like the corporation, i just used their sandwich as an example of the kind of chicken sandwich i like to eat.

Hamburger patties (or just a single patty) and cheese have featured in other entries but have had to share the sandwich spotlight with other ingredients. This entry finally allows them to be alone together at last. (If you ignore any accompanying toppings and condiments.)

@JBear likes to have it his way with a Burger King Whopper. And his way is certainly with cheese (not pictured).

@Daikaiju still carries a taste bud torch for McDonald's Cheddar Melt - which was a Quarter Pounder topped with grilled onions, teriyaki sauce and cheddar cheese sauce on a rye bun. It was originally introduced in 1988 but discontinued that same year. It met the same fate when it was reintroduced in 2004 and has not returned since then. (I remember also liking this sandwich. It was tasty and different but not too different.)

But I guess Daikaiju doesn't hold a grudge about that since the Big Mac is also one of his favorites.

@Kirin likes cheeseburgers in general but his ideal version is made with good local meat. And maybe has bacon or something. (But maybe isn't definitely so I didn't include his pick in the bacon cheeseburger entry.)

@RT-55J @Johnny Unusual @Alex @Issun

Side Dish: The cheeseburger is one of the few sandwiches that has songs written about it.

my favorite kind of cheeseburger is grilled at home in the backyard. You can mix up the meat just the way you like it. Its kinda fun to cook the burger, listening to the sizzle and seeing the little flares from grease drips. Its like half the fun of camping without all the sleeping on the ground malarky.

My vote was for the cheeseburger and whatever else you want to put on it. There are so many ways to top a cheeseburger and they're all delicious.

Issun's favorite - a cheeseburger and the quantum superposition of all delicious toppings for a cheeseburger.
