Ah, you beat me to it.
I'm extremely excited for this. Dune has long been a favourite of mine and the prospect of a properly good adaptation is very exciting. I don't think Dune is "unfilmable" as many attest, but it is difficult, and Denis Villeneuve is exactly the person I'd trust to do it right.
And what a cast! The entire line-up is stellar but Oscar Isaacs as Leto and Stellan Skarsgard as Harkonnen already look like standouts.
The only thing I'd quibble with is that it's a bit more drab than I'd like. Not that I expect (nor want) Dune to be bursting with colour, but I guess I expected a bit more saturation to it. But it's not a major concern for me, especially when the cinematography otherwise looks great. Can't wait.

I'm impressed they found a way to make defensive shields look cool and understandable

This trailer looks like the tiredest shit imaginable. It's got every boring hallmark of the last decade plus of movies trying to hammer sci-fi/fantasy stories into the same gritty war-focused hole.
Plinky, oppressive reimnagining of a classic rock song? Check.
"War...is coming" or some equivalent said in a raspy voice? Check.
The wubby Inception sound-effect shoehorned into some dramatic moment? Oh yeah.
Everybody's color-corrected to hell and back and looks like they could take a bath in Aveeno and still come out with dry skin? Of course.
Maybe this is just the trailer and not indicative of the film, but considering this is a Warner Brother's joint, I don't have much hope. Come on people, there are other ways to tell a story.

All of this is pretty much just bog standard blockbuster movie trailer making in 2020. I agree that it's extremely formulaic now, but that's really a complaint about the genre of blockbuster movie trailers rather than the movie in question.
No matter what the movie is, it's going to be edited into this trailer. This creates a degree of work for the viewer where you have to try to imagine what the underlying movie is that has been edited into this same trailer, again.
Those particular formal elements of trailers are a problem precisely because they're now so standardized that they obscure the underlying movie, rather than being an element of the trailer that reveals anything about the underlying movie.

At this point in his career Villeneuve has more than earned the benefit of the doubt, regardless of what the marketing department gets up to
I have a hard time imagining them going on to adapt the sequels

Whether or not there will be a sequel that covers the second half is TBD, probably depending on how this does.
So, it's not a situation where they filmed an adaptation of the entire first book and are splitting it over two movies.
They've said they're trying to present it as a standalone movie that is complete on its own. If they stick to this, I would guess they create a sort of open ending that serves as a soft cliffhanger. But we'll see.

Yeah, Villeneuve is a fantastic director, the cinematography looks gorgeous, and iirc it's a 2-film adaptation which means it won't be rushed and stilted like the previous movie.
They're also working on a TV series focusing on the Bene Gesserit, it seems? So, I dunno, seems like WB is banking on it being a franchise. Which...I could go for, in theory.
You can tell it's not an adaptation of the whole book because Feyd Rautha doesn't appear to have even been cast yet

Bummer that even if this is great, it won't make its money back due to COVID, and the second half probably won't be greenlit. I'm sure not going to see it even by December, but I'd spend $30 for a digital copy. They would only get a single dip from me, when any other year I'd see it in the theatres and then buy a digital copy months later.
My friend just texted me that House Harknonnen should be in Mortal Kombat 12 and I have to find some kind of way that more people can read that

Dune looks great. It probably will be great and I can't wait to watch it.
By the director of Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, and produced by the studios that gave us some of the higher-quality blockbusters of the last decade, including a lot of Christopher Nolan's output.
We get it, you hate the trailer and think the movie is going to be bad. We hear you and validate your opinion. Satisfied now?
It seems like "crusade" is being used rather than "jihad" in the trailer. Personally I think that type of thing fine for an adapatation, as long as they are keeping future syncretic religions like Zensunni that make up so much of the worldbuilding. (The books use both terms so maybe this is not significant beyond avoiding unnecessary controversy for a trailer.....)
