This was a meaty episode.
“I suppose you’d prefer an unmarked helicopter?”
”YES!”

"I'll spend my days in Duckburg, nights in St. Canard, and I'll sleep during the drive over!"

Also, on a rewatch, I appreciated even more how superhero-savvy Launchpad is, and how much he enjoyed helping DW and Gos with his "intel". He had his moments in the original show, few and far between, but I'll be glad to see the new team give him a particular area of expertise where he can excel and provide support beyond being just the pilot, muscle, and general comic relief of the team.

I also like that Gosalyn reminds me of a very young and very less violent and angry Rosa Diaz. Of course could just me being biased knowing who voices her but I cannot unsee it now.

Also thinking about it the two parter seems more like the start for the upcoming Negaduck season rather then a spin-off. Would be nice for the latter but I'm not gonna complain.

Now that I have access I'm watching this on Disney+. I went into it only knowing about the recent Darkwing Duck episode and what little bits I've learned through osmosis, so it's not exactly blind but it works.

I do have the 'correct viewing order' list that was posted on Twitter, though a cursory glance seemed to suggest that this was corrected for Disney+, but I'll be sure to use that order if there's any discrepancies.

1. Woo-oo!
Starting out, we get classic Donald and the nephews. The immediate tension between Donald and Scrooge has me curious about what's happened in the past to cause them to be so distant to each other (The nephews not knowing they were related to Scrooge shows that this is something Donald's never mentioned). Other oddity to me: Launchpad is Scrooge's driver, not Duckworth? And Launchpad isn't known as a pilot yet. Huey, Dewey, and Louie are all distinctly different! And Webby is amazing. I love that Scrooge has so much oddities that he keeps them in the garage. Also when I saw the dragon holding the gong, I imagined a Mushu from Mulan reference but enjoyed what we got. Headless Man Horse with Scrooge's Head is the best visual. Donald's bit with the stapler is also amazing. And I heard those namedrops for Cape Suzette and Spoonerville!

2. Escape To/From Atlantis! (aka Woo-oo! Part 2)
Dewey's antics vs. Scrooge's careful planning! Flintheart Glomgold is here and is amazing. All of Donald's time with the crew is great, when you have such great names as Gabby McStabberson and Hack and Slash Smashnikov, and yet Donald doesn't realize anything is off right away? Actually Donald is the secret best MVP of the episode, with his bit blocking the flames from spraying an oblivious Dewey being my favorite bit in the episode. Donald moving to the mansion with the houseboat makes me hope he'll be a main character a lot more than he was in the 1989 cartoon. Also, Huey, Dewey, and Louie have a mom? Is this the first time they've actually referenced who she is in any media?

3. Daytrip of Doom!
This episode starts out by reinforcing what you should already know: Webby is hardcore in this series! In fact, this was the episode where I had an 'aha!' moment when I realized who was doing her voice. But yeah, starting out with Webby playing the most badass game of foam-darts ever. And Mrs. Beakley and Donald get into a tussle over the rules, leading to plenty of Donald antics as his attempts to not have to obey the rules gets more and more outlandish. And yet Beakley isn't trying to be the bad guy here either. But the real fun comes from the daytrip, and Webby's reactions to everything are gold. Also, here we have the Beagle Boys! I haven't quite gotten to feel them out from just this episode, but Ma Beagle is great here. Webby is no pushover with the Beagles and Donald and Mrs. Beakley even team up. I admit I didn't immediately like the new Mrs. Beakley design but she's certainly starting to grow on me.

4. The Impossible Summit of Mt. Neverrest!
No one has climbed the highest mountain peak, but Scrooge plans to! But the mountain is quite the tourist trap. Still feeling out Launchpad here, with his antics involving 'ice fever', and a scam from a local merchant. The reveal about Scrooge's previous attempt to scale the mountain actually really echoed Launchpad to me, with young Scrooge not wanting to part with his supplies, and Launchpad being overburdened because of the supplies he bought but didn't need. The three nephews being more distinct is still a nice change, and gives them all their own roles in the story, with Huey being the explorer, Dewey furthering his friendship with Webby, and Louie ducking out of the adventure entirely, which lets him come to Launchpad's rescue. Exactly WHY Neverrest is so hard to climb is kinda an odd reason, but it works. The ending bit with Huey's map was pretty great.

Huey is also often paralyzed by his micromanagement, whereas Scrooge prefers clever, rather than overwrought, solutions.

5. The Great Dime Chase!
Already another great episode! In fact, I like this more than a couple of the earlier ones (though they've all been great) So Donald's sister is Della Duck, but her whereabouts are a bit of a mystery. Meanwhile, Scrooge is upset with Louie's laziness and decides to make him learn the value of a dollar. This leads to the three of them joining Scrooge at the Money Bin. And this immediately made me notice that Huey isn't along for the ride, so they're really pushing the individuality of the three. I don't think there were ever episodes of the old series where one of the nephews sat it out for the episode, but in the old series they were pretty indistinguishable unless the episode really wanted to play it up.

So, we have some new character show up. First of all, there's Miss Quackfaster and Gyro Gearloose... and holy cow, you guys. Both with zany personalities, but I am on board with this. I thought Quackfaster was Mrs. Featherby at first, but either way, her as the obsessive librarian was certainly my favorite part of the episode. Gyro is a bit more cynical, but I think he works well here. Louie's antics revolve around trying to recover Scrooge's No.1 Dime which I'm pleased has the same backstory as it's always had, leading him to take Lil Bulb to do so (and causing hijinks) while Dewey and Webby are trying to find out what happened to Della. They don't quite get an answer, so I'm hoping this is going to be arc story and take some time to feel out.

6. The Beagle Birthday Massacre!
The three nephews are all together again... so that they can run off on a boat and skip the start of the plot here... this is a Webby episode! After the nephews leave Webby behind, she finds a message in a bottle and follows it to find another girl, Lena. Lena seems to be older than Webby and they hit it off. After this, Lena invites Webby to a party. Webby doesn't want to leave before the boys get back but ends up going. The party is at the junkyard and Lena has Webby help her break in, since she wasn't invited. Turns out the party is for Ma Beagle and all the Beagle Boys are here, not just the main crew but a bunch of others. I was hoping to see some of the other familiar faces from 1989 but the variety here was already pretty impressive.

Anyway Ma Beagle wants Webby captured and the girls go on the run, trying to get to the mansion before they're caught. One particularly notable part is the two pretending to be 'the Beagle Birds' to trick one set of Beagle Boys. The triplets find them, and ironically enough Lena comments on how they're all the same and they all talk in unison (I find it ironic after all the comments I've made about how distinct they've become). Lena ends up captured and they try to rescue her but get caught as well, but they get free based on the revelation that families fight. The episode ends revealing to the audience that there's more about Lena than she lets on. Hype for the return of a classic character to come! (The series so far loves to do these sort of big endings and I love it.)

7. The House of the Lucky Gander!
This episode features Gladstone Gander, Donald Duck's cousin who I've seen in a bunch of media. He's the luckiest bird, who gets what he wants with his incredible luck, and this makes him and Donald fight a bit (Scrooge also doesn't like that he is lazy and relies on luck). Launchpad leaves the group to go meet up with his girlfriend? I kinda wanna see that story! Anyway, Gladstone is a prisoner because of his own luck, and ultimately it's Donald vs. Gladstone for the freedom of the family... And Gladstone loses because he's lucky enough to find money. The ACTUAL reason Scrooge came to Macaw was to hear a cricket... and it's about as great as you'd expect. Again, I really want to see the Launchpad adventure with Ziyi that they mentioned here.

All three triplets being in the same place at the same time is an increasing rarity as the show goes on, they'll often be off doing their own thing or even just not appear at all in an episode. They never really feel like they're at odds with one another or anything, just like.. they're allowed to be individuals while the original triplets were more like those kids whose parents make them dress the same.

The big question is whether this and their distinct voices will stick.

It's not impossible; imagine how thrilled I was to see Max on House of Mouse.

8. The Infernal Internship of Mark Beaks!
So we start out by learning there's a new billionaire in town, Mark Beaks, who's basically the owner of the DuckTales version of Google. Also we see that Scrooge and Glomgold spend a lot of time competing in staring contests, because that's just the sort of rivalry they have. The two don't like Beaks, leading to their role in the episode of Glomgold scheming on how to get rid of Beaks.

Huey and Dewey, are interested in Beaks and get offered an internship at his company... but when they arrive they realize they're actually competing for the same position. Huey is more interested in it from a traditional aspect of learning and growth, and Dewey is more interested in the fun and perks, and their methods of competing reflect this. A saboteur named Falcon Graves tries to steal Beak's big secret project... but the secret is that there is no project and Mark Beaks made all this money entirely on hype. Which seems depressingly realistic.

My understanding is that Beaks is a whole new character that isn't from other media? I never read some of comics but I know the lore of the series pulls from a little of everything, but as a new character I am curious if they'll do anything neat with Beaks besides just being the "Lol Facebook and Google" guy.

Also Glomgold can remove his beard. So there's that.

9. The Living Mummies of Toth-Ra!
Here's some classic DuckTales action: Launchpad crashing a plane, pyramids and mummies! While exploring the pyramids of the ancient Pharaoh, Toth-Ra, the group falls into a trapdoor and Webby and Louie are separated from the others. Scrooge's group finds mummies, but these aren't the monster types of mummies, just descendants of the pharaoh's servants who have served him all this time. They work and give offerings and are rewarded with a faint glimpse of the sun.

Louie and Webby however landed inside the Pharaoh's chambers which are off limits and start to suspect something is up with the Pharaoh that the others have seen... Mummies don't actually come back to life after all... Until they do.

Launchpad introduces the servants to burritos and this is all the inspiration they need to risk their lives. This is a pretty great episode and I particularly was fond of Cree Summer as Amunet, the leader of the servants.

Yeah, Beaks is new and a nod to the Silicon Valley types, just like Rockerduck was to Big Oil.

Man, the show's really come into its own in season three. The past few episodes have fixed my two biggest gripes with the series: a poor sense of space and defanged villains. FOWL is pretty darn great, and I really like most of the locations they've been visiting.

The latest episode finally pushed Huey forward a bit, and in a way I totally didn't expect: unleashing his inner Donald. Focusing each season's emotional arc on one of the triplets is a great idea, though I feel like they've always struggled with what to do with Huey. Here's hoping they stick the landing.

Got a bit behind on writing on this, so let's get quacking!

10. Terror of the Terra-firmians!
Launchpad and Mrs. Beakley, the kids, and Lena come out of a horror movie. Launchpad in particular was scared but most of the others were not. Webby has her horror story for the group: The Terra-firmians. Lena decides they should investigate the nearby subway. Dewey and Launchpad get a lot of time together, while Huey and Webby argue over the existence of the unknown. Huey's way of dealing with the unknown is amusing: by making notes about it, it's no longer the unknown! Beakley and Lena go off on their own and Beakley tells Lena she doesn't want her around Webby anymore. Of course, there's still more to Lena than the others know about, and her shadow urges Lena to leave Beakley behind when she gets trapped. Despite the urging, Lena helps Beakley. The creatures causing all the earthquakes turned out to be the Terra-firmians, It's neat to see them return from the old cartoon (and I'll be honest, I remember them more as the boss of the African Mines in the NES game) but they had a lot more of a hidden, and monstrous vibe, up until the ending. As for Lena, her shadow of Magica De Spell wants to know why Lena saved Beakley, but when Beakley apologizes, Lena says she's playing the long game. So another mystery here, what will happen with Lena, and what side will she be on? I love it.

11. The Missing Links of Moorshire!
Scrooge and Glomgold are playing golf in the birthplace of golf! Huey and Launchpad are commentating so Huey can get a merit badge (In this series, Huey tends to be the only one to focus on them, instead of the whole trio. Scrooge decides to teach Dewey how to play, and Glomgold bribes Louie to be his caddy (though Louie seems to be getting the better of Glomgold instead). But Scrooge's ball ends up in a stone circle like Stonehenge and they end up in a realm surrounded by mist. A mystical druid golf game! Two horses (complete with My Little Pony voice actors) show up and offer to help, but Webby says they are kelpies and to avoid them, starting the running gag of them trying and failing to drown the ducks. They have to keep playing game and Dewey's eagerness clashes with Scrooge's patience, including taking a shot he shouldn't have. But in the end as the mists close in, Scrooge sacrifices himself to let Dewey make the final shot they need to win. Louie's antics with Glomgold, and the kelpies Briar and Bramble are my favorite parts of this episode.

12. The Spear of Selene!
The moment I saw the title of this episode I was hype. The mystery of what happened to Della that was hinted back in the pilot has been something I've been most looking forward to. The Duck's plane crashes near Greece and it's revealed they've landed on Ithaquack (which I remember from an episode of the old cartoon). Scrooge and Donald in particular are worried and want to leave, but then they're confronted by Storkules, who is happy to see them (particularly Donald). Then Zeus shows up, angry because Scrooge is there. Turns out that Scrooge, Donald, and Della used to come here for vacations, but Scrooge always beat Zeus at challenges. Dewey and Webby sneak off to the Temple of Heroes in search of a Selene, based on the Spear of Selene mentioned in the letter they found in Scrooge's library. Dewey thinks his mother is a hero, but Webby is worried that she betrayed Scrooge. Even fighting over it as they explore.

Zeus forces the Ducks to compete against Storkules, but the nephews tend to outsmart Storkules's strength. Zeus keeps extending the number of rounds, until the final round is stealing the Golden Fleece from a young girl. Storkules doesn't want to steal from a child, but the child is a siren who takes control of Storkules so that Zeus can use him to attack the boys. Dewey and Webby fight because Dewey doesn't want to find out his mother is a bad person. But they decide to enter the temple of Selene, and find Selene herself, the goddess of the moon, who knows Della. But Selene has never heard of the Spear of Selene... but she tells Dewey that his mother was devoted to her family, and gives him the Sphere of Selene. So the mystery is still there... the name of the episode was a bit misleading, but a good episode. In the end, Dewey accidentally steals Zeus's victory over Scrooge, and they get chased away from the island to find a Launchpad who's dismantled the plane.

I really liked the flashback episode. Kind of cool to have Della and Donald basically be in the same position as the nephews in the original show. I especially loved the irony of young Donald being the catalyst that pushes this Scrooge from seeing adventures as a means to an end to seeing them as an end in and of themselves. In a sense Donald inadvertently puts the upcoming tragedy into motion with an off-the-cuff comment.

I also love how this show has effectively doubled the number of people who have voiced Donald from three to six. Cristina Valenzuela does an amazing job taking over for Russi Taylor.

I’ve been worried it’s the end ever since Gene’s comment in “Quack Pack,” the fact that each season focuses on one of the triplets, and now with the Santa running gag resolved. I guess we’ll see, but I’m not surprised if it is done.

We’d better get at least one more Donald episode.

I need to put some time towards watching it. I thought what I saw was good but I just never make time for telly.

I feel like that's likely. The tweet notes Disney's hesitancy to announce, which makes me think the show's ending was planned by the creators and, like Gravity Falls, Disney might be hoping to convince them to keep going before announcing.

Skimming Twitter I see lots of people blaming this on "Disney moving Ducktales to DisneyXD".

Uh.

I've always watched all Disney shows on DisneyXD, both long-runners and canceled-too-earlies. I never even tune into "The Disney Channel" at all. I know XD is a premium digital channel, but would that be reason enough for a cancellation?

Also if the above source is an industry journalist, would it be premature to take his word for it before hearing from the showrunners themselves?

(Yeah yeah I'm at the bargaining stage let me be :p)

If random twitter guy is to be believed, Disney is more interested in a Seth Rogen Darkwing Duck project, which isn't something I'd even heard about.
