I love it because I imagine if the show got a second season way back when, Joan’s arc (eyyy) would’ve been about her trying to be popular and hating it because it’s not the real her, man. Here, the real her is what makes her popular, and yet she’s still miserable.

My only complaint is that Mr. B has a greatly reduced role and he’s more snippy than being the Really Weird Voice of Reason for the whole school.

I'm watching Star vs. the Forces of Evil. It's great. At the start of season 3 at the moment - S2s ending was pretty great, and the whole season started to play around with the formula and created some really cool episodes.

It also looks great, is adorable and sweet, and also pretty funny. I had wanted to watch it for quite some time now, should have gotten to it sooner.

Good lord but Clone High is killing it.

So hey remember all that crap that came out about Justin Roiland which caused him to be completely dumped by all the shows he was working on but since he voiced a number of main characters in them people were wondering how they could possibly continue?

Well we're still waiting to see what they're going to do with Rick and Morty, but chances are it won't be too far off from the irreverent way Solar Opposites is handling it:

It’s pretty much the perfect way to handle recasting him and they get to throw a dart into his neck in a legally permissible way

I've never heard about this show before (or if I did any awareness of it slipped off me immediately), but that clip makes a very strong first impression. That's about as well as you could handle a situation like this, and it's a great 2 minute preview for gawkers like me who only looked at the clip because of the scandal. I would never have considered watching it previously, but now I could see it happening.

I’ve described it before as “If everyone in Rick and Morty actually seemed to enjoy each others company, and the fanbase didn’t have so many crumbums“

It’s all the anarchy of Rick and Morty with none of the pretentious nihilism, I love it.

This is the best possible “eff you” to Roiland because the new voice sounds absolutely nothing like him but fits the character 1000x better. Dude apparently did voice work because he thought it made him immune to getting canned, despite being a pest to everyone who encountered him and a predator to teenagers. Screw him.

The show can sometimes get a bit grim, almost exclusively in the ongoing B-plot in The Wall. (the most recent cliffhanger ended with the screen going black right before an infant is branded and crying out in pain which thus far is the only thing in the show that has given me pause and made me go 'ehhhnnnn that was a bit too far' but there's a good chance stuff like that was due to Roiland's influence so we'll see how the tone is in the new season)

Done with Star vs the Forces of Evil. Really nice show.

The first two seasons were just great, with the second one being the highpoint of the show, for me. After that, the story felt more and more directionless. The ending, while feeling great while watching, felt mainly like a cop-out. Magic wasn't the problem. The problem was how monsters have been treated for such a long time. Which the show simply didn't deal with. Honestly, that whole part was interesting, but didn't really work out that well.

But the characters were always fun, the humor never left, and especially the episodes that weren't about Star, but her spells, or Ludo, were always great. Really, I had no idea how much I would miss Ludo, while he was still the antagonist, he was a very enjoyable antagonist.

Really fun show, glad I finally watched it.

My bet's on Rick and Morty being quickly and suddenly killed off and replaced by an alternate dimension Rick and Morty who have different voices and life experiences.

Teaser for Nimona which looks like it comes out June 30th:

I'm a little concerned that the wizard isn't a part of the teaser at all, or maybe he's the rider at one point. His conflicts and perspective were what gave the story a lot of weight and made it so dang good.
Hey so this is out! I overlooked it for a few days but I noticed it on Netflix today and just got finished watching it.

I'm happy to say it is really really good! It changes a number of things from the original comic and I don't love every change it made but the entire package was just a delight to watch and the story still hit all the important beats.

Go watch it! I don't know what kind of numbers it has been doing since it dropped but it most certainly deserves more views.

Adult Swim put the first episode of the new Superman show up on Youtube (in the US anyway), and it's super charming. The actors are all well cast and the animation is by Studio Mir so it's got that Avatar vibe to it that works really well in a superhero show. I always like the interpretation of Superman that's just a really good dude trying to help out as best he can.

Thanks. Seems to be available outside of the US too, I could watch it.

It looks great, the characters are nicely interpreted, and it was generally a fun episode. I do like, that this isn't just "Superman fights whatever villain there is", but having more of Clark, and how he deals with stuff.

Have you ever wanted to see Superman fight an Eva? Because that's what happens! And I'm here for it!

I have no idea why this is on Adult swim. It is adorable and should be broadcast at 4:30 PM after Batman.

(Note: I have no idea if kids' shows even air on TV anymore)

EDIT: In thinking about it, my only concern is that they're kind of slow burning the "Superman" thing, Smallville (tv show)-style, and I have general concerns about this being a Surf Dracula situation. But the "normal day" interplay is tops, so I could even deal with that...

Finally saw The Mitchells Vs. the Machines. This sounds like an insult but it isn't; this feels like a recent era Disney animated series (Gravity Falls, Amphibia, Owl House) season condensed into a single movie. But gracefully. It's actually less surprising to realize there were Gravity Falls vets behind the scenes on this one. I feel like the aesthetics crib a lot from the last couple decades of comics/novels aimed at elementary/middle school aged kids and the kids aren't making a ton of references to older stuff (there are two references by the lead to older movies that I would believe she would have taken time to watch). I see way too many films where dialogue by a teenager merely reveals the touchstones of the 40 something year old writer. Overall, it's a really fun movie and while it risks "old man yelling about cloud" about phones, it's more a starting point about the other ways we fail to connect, even to people we love (and how the phones also do help in connection).

That movie basically uses a goofy “what if phones but too much” plot to sneak in a “phones are good, actually” message and I am here for it. It’s a little at odds with itself as a result but I like that its response to the dad kvetching about kids and their devices is that he should learn why they’re spending so much time on them. For all the harm these things can do, they also genuinely enrich people’s lives.

Right, I watched the rest of S2 of Clone High. Had a lot of fun. The characters all felt nicer - JFK and Cleo were both less bullies than in S1, and for some reason, I missed that a bit. Still love Mr. Butlerthron, I want him to be my bestie (but agreed, I I liked him more in S1, where he was less snippy). Really liked the episode where we learn about his backstory.

The focus on Jean is great, maybe my favourite character in the show? Really liked that she got so much focus, and having her explored more.

Also, I really liked the songs. Dunno, they are musical songs, it's really hard for me not to like them. Even with lyrics as dumb as here ("Let's sing, instead of speaking!"). Amazing.

I missed Ghandi, though.

Sprite

I believe they've said bringing Gandhi back is a possibility, they just didn't want him to be the reason the show was cancelled again.

FelixSH

I eidn't know he was the reason for the cancellation. Didn0't expect him to come back, though, I assumed leaving him out was some kind of joke I didn't get.

They should have just kept him in with a new name and an obvious fake handlebar moustache and garish hat, which would have been in-character. "My hat man, what's up?"

Honestly, I felt like Topher Bus was someone that was invented from having that idea, but pulling back. And I'm glad Topher was his own, horrible character.

And yeah, I missed Ghandi the character and Abe having an obvious sidekick for dialogue purposes. But I generally felt "famously thoughtful person reimagined as a shallow teen" was filled very effectively by Confucius. And, in thinking about it, I was glad that position went to a "new" clone, as the "Tik Tok Generation" thing probably wouldn't work as well with an old clone learning the ropes.

Also: since the season is over now, I can safely say I enjoyed the whole new reboot. Hoping for more.

I liked the new season but not nearly as much as I did the original.

Beavis & Butthead remains the only long dormant revival that actually does perfectly recapture the spirit and quality of the original
